Most of you won't have heard of these guys so let me start by telling you a bit about them.
They formed in 2000 and they're all from Sweden. They started a genre of their own, "SiD metal" and the use a SidStation (which uses a soundchip from the commodore 64) to create synth voices and samples that cause memories of old school video games to come gushing forth. This is combined with power and melody to create a sound that's truly unique. They've released over 50 COMPLETELY FREE, LEGAL tracks on their website and they're attitude to free music is admirable and it really shows record companies how not to be a cunt. To paraphrase frontman robert, if you don't think the album isn't worth buying then don't; but go download it. For this band, it truly is about the music, which is something alot of major bands should consider these days.
So, the album. I'll start by saying that I think it's incredible. It's powerful affair, and certainly much darker and heavier than the band's previous efforts. This album is much more focused on the guitars and drums and the SiD sound effects take a backseat here. The drumming in particular is very busy and agressive and it really carries the song.
Opening track "Elite" sets the tone of thing to come, beginning with a thunderous thrash opening before breaking into a fast paced guitar riff that is stereotypical MaSu style. The intro of this song also demonstrates the SiD sound effects that are the most identificable aspect of this band.
I'm not going to go into each song but suffice to say the sheer power of this band is carried through all of the 15 tracks, culminating in an epic "Empire" which (for me at least) conjures images of dramatic video game endings.
The production on this album is very good although I do think that the vocals sit too low in the mix on a couple of occasions. But apart from that, it's top notch.
That's about all I can really say about the album for now. It should appeal to anyone who likes their music heavy and nostalgic. Although I think that it would appeal to those who aren't big metal heads, as the whole band sound isn't as hevy as say, opeth but it still packs an immense punch.
I'd reccomend that you all go to www.machinaesupremacy.com and download all the site tracks (including 2 tracks from this album, "rise" and "through the looking glass"). If you like what you hear, grab the album, it's worth it and although I usually hate buying music in any form (limewire FTW) I feel happy to purchase this particular slice of musical magnificene, knowing that it's going to help a band who really ARE about the music.
