First off, if you do happen to come by this game, makes sure you get the special edition version of Zelda. Why? I hear you yell at the screen. Because, with the special edition, you get two bonus Zelda games. You get Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and Zelda Master Quest. Three Zelda games for the price of one.
This review, however, will focus on Zelda the Wind Waker. The game starts out wth the usual basics, Link's sister is kidnapped by a giant bird by mistake. It was actually after someone else and so, Link sets off on a "never ending quest to save my girlfriend", errr, I meant his sister ;)
This Zelda game is huge. Once you have found your little friend, a talking boat, the game becomes very open and free. You can explore the massive world, but certain parts can only be explored by gaining new skills and items. For example, climbing up a huge cliff and finding the cave with the Tree of Life in it, can only done once you have a grappling hook. etc. etc.
As you progress through the game, you pickup new songs to *cough* wake the wind and stuff. I know, it sounds very lame, and sometimes, I find myself playing this game, singing a song to the wind, and then finding a tub of vasoline on the sofa next to me. Honestly, I have no idea where that bloody vaso comes from. Anyway, homo-erotic rambling aside, you get a little baton and song or spells that you *cough* sing to get certain effects like wind direction change (helps you with sailing faster in the direction you want), tornado warp-holes, changing night to day(helps with certain side quests) and things like that.
Very, very cool stuff to be done in this game. And, of course, let's not forget the Zelda staple. You can still hack at the grass for hours on end to find goodies. Let me tell you, those bloody flowers got it good when I played this game!!
GRAPHICS Score: 98%
Z:WW uses cell shading cartoon graphics. This works beautifully in this game as the graphics are both smooth, as well as beautiful. The viewing perspective is huge, you can see storms quite far into the distance, islands and fortresses also appear from way off.
Link, and all the other character from the game are very detailed as are the monsters. The animations are flawless and everything not only looks natural, but also moves naturally in this world. The waves and the water look fantastic and after playing this game, I usually find I actually want to go for a swim....But then I don't because I'm lazy and when everyone is out to get you, its best to stay in doors.
SOUND/MUSIC Score: 99%
Link is a little cutie pie. He even sounds like a little cutie pie. He trips and falls over himself all the time, making funny little cute sounds. He makes really, really, cute little hurt noises. I'm a guy, and the cutness factor they have put into Link brought out the female instincts inside me. I never want the cute little bugger to get hurt, because he sounds too damn cute, and when he does eventually get hurt(because I admit, Im a bit of a sadist), tears start welling in my eyes!!
Actually, come to think of it, all the sounds in this bloody game are cutesy and very emotional. They draw you in with their appeal and wonder. From the screeching of flying birds, to the screams of inraged goblins, the sound effects are top notch and very effective.
The music is also quite emotional. Different types of music will come up on the seas, not depending on your location, but depending on the dangers around you and the weather. This game rocks, and rocks hard.
MULTIPLAYER Score: N/A
Pffft, who needs other people to play this game. Althought the developers have kind of allowed for a second person to play by using a GameBoy Advance Adapter and helping out with maps and general info.
But do you really need someone else nagging at you to give them a turn. Come on, lets be honest here, this game is made for playing by yourself. While I'm playing this game, I have neither family, friends, nor girlfriend. Its just me and Link, and our kick ass adventures on the high seas!!
(RE)PLAYABILITY Score: 72%
This game is really long. And, there is heaps to do and explore. I have finished the game, but I haven't played it since, not because I don't want to, but because I don't have the time to commit myself to being drawn into another huge adventure.
Of course, once you finish the game, certain new things appear. I ont spoil it by listing what happens, but if you're really curious, I will include a Link (http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/gamecube/code/469050.html), to a list of what "unlocks" once you finish the game....
And, lets not forget the massive ammount of side quests that you can do in this game. I pretty much rushed through my first game, not bothering with most of the side quests. I did try a few,and some of the side quests are awfully hard to complete.
CONTROLS Score:94%
Link is easy to control and battle with. All movement options are simple and straight forward. The best part is navigating the oceans with your boat. This will keep you amused for hours on end as that little bastard can really fly on the water. For some strange reason, the boat can also jump. Never really found a use for that though...
Camera control can be a bit of a pain sometimes, as is the case with all third person perspective games. But, camera controls are automatic, and can be tuned in a manual mode if you use the C-Stick. Also, 1st person perspective is available to use. This makes finding stuff heaps easy.
ATMOSPHERE Score:100%
This game sucks you in quicker than a working girl at a military convention. She gives great discounts sure, IF you're in the service, but what if you're like me, a coward. Then you got to pay full price, and thats just a rip off. You'll literally be getting screw twice! Wait....er, I was talking about the Zelda right?! Yeah, thats right..er.. the atmosphere.
Its good. 'nuff said.
PROBLEMS
The end guy is too freaking hard to kill. I did it eventually, but it took me a long time with many words that made baby Jesus cry. I am now on his shit list, all because the bloody end guy is too damn difficult to kill. Lets just say, you can't actually kill him by beating him to death. You have to do certain things to kill him. This really annoyed me. I have the Master Sword. The most powerful sword in existance, and I can't kill anyone with it??! Does anyone else see the problem here, or is it just me and my unholy taste for blood? I wanted to hack that bastard end guy to death. I was denied my rightful dues.
Another thing is the baton. That really annoys me. I got a game where your suposed to be a badass hero that kicks much ass. Not a sissy little musicial conductor who channels wind with a gold baton. Okay, I admit, you can do some pretty cool things with that baton, but its still so.....wrong. Why not make it a rocket launcher that you shoot into the sky. You load it with different missles to get different effects. Or, what about something else that's says big, strong and manly. What about a spear, or a big car entering a tunnel.... Errr, umm, nevermind. Just forget you read that last part.
Other then that, the game freaking rocks.
OVERALL Score:97%
This game will have you hooked into it for a long time. I'm still waiting for the next Zelda to come out (wasn't it suposed to be December??!), but this is still a really good play.
Once again, excellent value if you grab the special edition one with the two extra games on it. I still haven't even tried them yet, because Wind Waker is such an awesome game.
