Islamic Republic News Agency Friday, March 31, 2006

Iranian Aircraft Industries (IACI) has joined with Malek Ashtar's Aeronautical Research Center to develop the first indigenous Iranian military jet since the formation of the Islamic Republic in 1979, senior management sources told The Islamic Republic News Agency.

Much more ambitious and larger than the Shafaq, the Saeqeh light combat fighter hopes to address the domestic demand for next generation combat aircraft and advance training jets. The single seat, twin-engine plane will be suited for a variety of air to air roles and support requirements.

"The Saeqeh will be displayed at the next Kish Air Show, and we expect the aircraft to take off for its maiden flight very soon," an IACI source said. IACI conducted preliminary design work several years ago for a new advanced combat aircraft, but faced with mushrooming development costs of nearly $400 million it teamed up with IAMI to develop and promote a lightweight plane with clear potential for further military applications.

The Saeqeh will fly at 1.7 Mach, or about 2,083 kph. It will weigh approximately 4,700 kg.

The Saeqeh's cockpit and avionics will be compatible with the display and other systems in advanced generation fighters, including the F-15, F-16, MiG-29, Rafale and Eurofighter. Systems will include embedded simulations of combat scenarios, simulated operation of weapons and self-defense systems and mission planning and debriefing capabilities.

IACI also sees a strong market in Asia, and is likely to offer the aircraft to air forces operating 60's era aircraft.

Heres a few tips:

1) Post all of Iran's new defense capabilities into the one thread
2) Include Sources
3) If the source is from iranfocus.com, then dont bother with step 1

How long until insurgent forces are flying these things and striking at american targets, forcing them to bring their airforce back in force, thusly enabling the ground-based insurgents armed with AA missiles to take potshots at them?

The longer the wait before the US/Iran war, the more powerful and more prepared Iran will be

You actually believe the US governments rhetoric on Iran?

Fuck, Aardvark, I thought you had more brains than that.

You think Iran isn't sending insurgents to destablise iraq? You're the moron, dude. Iran has everything to gain from instability in iraq. Oilrich country ripe for conquest, a lot of infidels killed, America embarrassed.

Why wouldn't they give their insurgents jetfighters and anti-air missiles? Hell, America did it to their insurgents in Afganistan, '89

So here is th info on the great aircraft:

http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/iran/shafaq.htm

Shafaq (Before the Dawn) Fear Iran's subsonic light attack aircraft that Russia disowned!

The design for a new Iranian light attack aircraft the Shafaq / Shafagh (Farsi for “before the dawn”) appears to be a replay of a light fighter design developed more than 10 years ago at the Mikoyan design bureau in Moscow. This two-seat Advanced training and Attack aircraft appears to be based on the Russian-Iranian "Project Integral" and are fitted with Russian ejection seats. Reportedly there are plans are to produce three versions -- one two-seat trainer/light strike version and two one-seat fighter-bomber versions.

The Shafaq is a look-a-like of the YF-17. Shafaq is an advanced Light Attack/Trainer aircraft designed by the Aviation University Complex (AUC), part of the Malek Ashtar University of Technology. At the start of the program Iran received help from Russia and the aircraft was back then known as ''Integral'', Russia later backed away from this project due to several reasons and Iran carried on the project by itself and the aircraft became known as ''Shafaq''. The Shafaq is a sub-sonic aircraft, made of radar-absorbing material. It has a large leading edge root extension (LERX) and a root aft of the wing which gives it an unusual circular sub-section. A 1/7 scale model of the Shafaq has already completed testing in the AUC's wind tunnel and pictures have already been revealed which show that a Full-scale model has already been built. The Shafaq will be built in several variants which include a Two-Seater Trainer, Two-Seater Light Attack and a One-Seater Light Attack variant. Roll-out of the first prototype is scheduled for 2008. In August 2004 it was reported that the Shafaq prototype jet was ready for flight.

Oh wait, I was wrong. Apparently they are developing 2 aircraft. THey will be using old F-4 and F-5 engines to power these beasts. That alone is LOL worthy.

Iran has one goal in the middle east - the annihalation of the Zionist state. It isnt interested in conquering any other state, nor has it tried to run the middle east. If it wanted to, it could very easily, however.

Iran will gain nothing by intervening in Iraq except for embarrassment, and they would rather have America (or the Evil Empire) as they call it suffer most without getting their hands dirty.

It makes more sense for them to do nothing and let others make fools of themselves. Eventually, given Iraq is majority Shia, the country could even vote itself out of existence and become a province of Iran very peacefully if it wished.
