alright guys, is this thing gonna happen again this year? if experience is any guide discussions about it need to start relatively soon (and i'll have to put in for the time off WAAYYY early i have a real job again)
Seeing as Stocking and I will be in your neck of the woods in a few months, why not have a mini ZMeet in the US?:D
thingy

I think the most important factor when organising the next one is where. Will we have it in Sydney again, or are we going to start touring? If in Sydney we are garanteed good turnouts to events as that is where the majority of social ZGeekers reside. However, we should also try to be fair to the interstate / international contingents too by moving it around the place, especially for those who can't afford the time/cost of travelling interstate / overseas.
So, what are peoples opinions? Sydney or elsewhere? If elsewhere, let it be known where you'd prefer. I'm tending towards Melbourne myself as that is where the second largest contingent of social ZGeekers exist, so Sydneyites and Melbournites, fight it out.
Edit: Another idea for those who can't make it to the official location, maybe have some concurrent smaller regional ZMeets happening. Make it the same as the Global where everyone reports in, writes up reviews & posts pictures galore. If we have something at someone's house who has broadband, maybe even a netcast/conf between that location and another zmeet?

That's another major consideration and why I'm wanting feedback on the issue, yes. I would love to know peoples feelings for/against having it in places (and PLEASE, no reasons like "but that city/town sucks/is a hole!", I mean REAL reasons such as distance and whatnot).
When are the school holidays anyway? Not that it really matters, I mean, the little blighters won't be allowed to join us in the pub anyway. :p

druid is planning on coming to australia at some stage. i probably won't be at university this year, so i don't have to worry about holidays and whatnot.
i'm up for travelling to sydney... maybe melbourne.
i doubt we want to have it in brisbane
a) there's not enough people here
b) it's too far away from melbourne
BUT!
c) it's got good weather.
d) it's got me :)

Point c should really read that it's too bloody hot (I prefer cooler weather myself, dislike heat).
So if it read that, then you'd have 4 points against just there. :p :D
I don't mind organising stuff again, but it would have to be in Sydney. I have visited Melbourne and Canberra (a lot) and Brisbane once, but I wouldn't want to actually organise stuff there.

Obviously Melbourne would be nice, but I think Sydney is the more viable alternative (hell, we got the F1, gotta let you guys have SOMETHING ;)). Doubtful as to whether I can make it or not (am saving for a big trip at the end of the year), but depending on dates etc., all should be okay :)

well it's all the same to me. after 7,500 miles a few hundred north or south matter little. i'd like to see melbourne and brisbane but if i can put together another visit i plan to have enough extra cash to make those trips.
as for the north american bureau... it's still in my car but, hopefully, i'll have a place within a month or two to act as a properly geographically stable bureau. you guys are welcome whenever you hop the pond, SOC. (tyrany and mrs. tyrany are supposidly in the vicinity now but i've yet to hear from them...)
as for ZGeek north america... who we got within a southwest flight from LA willing to imbibe alcohol with the one who has been to the ZGeek Mecca of the ZHouse?

The trip plans keep changing (what a surprise!) but at this stage we intend to be in California by early June (heading to Japan for a few days first) ... will hire a car to cruise around for a week or 2 (wanna see LA, San Fran and Las Vegas) before venturing to the other side (probably starting in Washington before venturing to New York and other points north). The original plan - to hire a car to drive all the way across the US - turned out to be a trifle expensive this time round (we wanna have some money left for Europe!) but I definitely wanna do this some time in the future.
We want to meet up with as many other ZGeekers as we can while in the US, so how many of you would be able to make it to a weekend ZMeet in Los Angeles, San Francisco or Las Vegas early in June?

I reccomend Sydney for around the time of the sept/oct(or whenever they are) school holidays, would be better weather for getting around in than june/july, plus it is around the same time as the previous one which was also a year after an excursion of doom which I traveled from Vic for, basically let this become an annual event around the same time each year.
Melbourne is probably out of the question, boy do we have something instore for you poor SOB's down there early this year.............
Rumor has it that a majority of the zhouse, plus a few others and all welcom more than likely will be in Victoria for a week for the Melbourne Comedy Festivle. Dates being looked at are approximately fri 11th/sat 12th april(leave sydney) through to Sat 19th/Sun 20th april(return to sydney). Preferably these dates for I am working on my parents to go on holidays for these days so as I can utilise the house for mass accomodation and rally point/orgaisation. If the house isn't available a caravan should be able to be used instead with capacity to sleep 7 inside plus 2 large external annexes. I will get around to writing up a proper event ideas and details threads for this when I:
a. Have time
b. Can be stuffed
c. Have both a. & c. coenside in a practical location
d. goto a.
e. run
An idea for an event during the zmeet is to get everyone to meet at Manly Wharf where every one is to purchase a day tripper STA pass(for all froms of "public" transport) $13.50,
travel to circular quay via ferry,
travel to St. James Station via train,
partake in St. James tunnel tour(as seen in excursion of doom 4), travel back to circular quay via train,
travel to Taronga Zoo ferry stop by guess what,
travel via bus/walk to Mosman for lunch at cafe/food place or maybe even import a bbq,
travel to middle head for exploration of old war tunnels/bunkers(as seen in excursion of doom 1),
travel back to taronga zoo ferry stop,
travel back to circular quay via you know what,
travel from circular quay to dinner spot in town(probably end up thai or chinese for variety and ease of choice for budget/taste) via preffered method of transport,
travel back to circular quay,
travel back to manly by ferry,
piss up at manly pubs/clubs then disperse.
This should allow for lots of touristy photo ops of opera house/bridge/etc... along the routes at different angles and times of day, lots of travel, but most of it can be done sitting down for the not so fit, and flexible for a day pass will allow people south of CBD to still meet at manly or cicular quay pending the amount of travel they wish to partake. No rush, all are high volume travel routes so if anything is missed it will only be 5 - 15 mins for the next transport to appear.
Total approximate minimum cost is $23.50
That is $13.50 for travel pass
And $10 for tunnel excursion,
food/drink is self purchase

I can confirm the date right now. Friday, September 26 until Monday September 29. The main reason for this is because there is another massive ZGeek event that will be planned for late Friday October 3 until Monday October 6 (The ZGeek Car Rally/Jenolan Caves Tour). With any luck, some of the people who are coming from OS can stay for the long weekend!
I shall have more details about the latter event shortly...:D

I vote for Sydney.
My main and obvious reason is simple, by September/October next year I will be the proud Mother of the first official Zgeek baby... :D so obviously travelling anywhere outside of Sydney is out of the question for me and Lujan.
I'm sure that we will be able to attend an event or two, and if something is low key, like a bbq for example, I may even consider bringing the baby for people to fuss over.

Ok, that which has been officially decided so far is:
Location: Sydney.
Date: Friday 26th September through to Monday 29th September 2003 AD.
Now we need to decide on things to do.
Suggestions so far to do have been:
Taronga Zoo.
Harbour day (Manly -> St James Train Station Tunnels -> Zoo Wharf -> Middle Head Tunnels -> Dinner in City).
BBQ or other low key (most likely final day as recovery event as with last GZM)
Suggestions so far NOT to do have been:
BBQ King for dinner.
Outer suburb "bullshit" (hey, you followed us ... NONE of us even knew you were joining us until you jumped into the zbus so don't fscken complain biatch).
Please post more ideas for things to do. Personally I'd prefer it if we did different things this time around.
I was hoping to do something in the blue mountains (3 Sisters etc), but that might be a bit of a nightmare as far as co-ordinating transport goes. Plus once we're out there, once we're bored of it, it's a long way back.

I would suggest leaving that to the following weekend - if you are already going to Jenolan Caves, you will virtually go right past the 3 Sisters.
I'll try to think of some more stuff, low cost options. And I think the zoo is a good idea :)
also, what about an Opera House tour? I seem to recall doing on years ago, I don't think it cost much. I can look into that

Australia's Wonderland is another good place to go, even though it's in the outer suburbs it's pretty easy to get to by public transport and it's a great day out.
Also, there's the ghost tour of the old quarantine station in Sydney which I wouldn't mind going to myself.

This is correct. You guys have holidays at peculiar times ;). I would probably travel in August or early September but I hear it's too cold for you weirdlings then.
My plans also include a possible hop to Brisbane (budget allowing.) Time to start looking for flights.
It'd be nice to see you all at once but seems a bit unprobable, maybe next year then :( .
P.S. Who would want to accommodate me in exchange for exotic cooking and vodka based drinks (it's black! http://forums.zgeek.com/images/forum/subject/icon42.gif)? Rick has kindly offered me a bed but I couldn't possibly bother anyone for more than a week (yes it would be a longer trip than just for the meet.) W00t! Can I have that in writing? No wait, I already did. Seems that I would now have accommodation for the planned two weeks: Rick(?) and House of Z. There is one issue tho: it might be that the attendance would be druid + avec and this will undoubtedly complicate the housing arrangements, no?
After looking the calendar, that particular period doesn't look so bad after all and I am now in the process of checking out bargain flights.

Sure we can. Isn't there an outdoors cinema somewhere in Sydney that shows classic stuff at nights? It might be swell to get some snacks and drinks and spend a night or half there in a pique-nique fashion? That is, if the place exists also outside my mind and is open.
In general I'd vote for low budget fun.

step two is to post that information in a somewhat permanent form either at the beginning of this thread or in a you-dont-have-the-power-to-post-here-puny-mortal thread.

Allow me to advise you of the beauty of the Australian climate, even in winter here, night time activities are perfectly normal. Considering where you're from, our winter wouldn't even be slighty cold for you.
Also, considering it never snows in Sydney, even in winter, unless it rains, outdoor cinemas would be a go.

No "official" events so far, at the moment this thread is just for ideas for events and guaging peoples interest in these ideas so we know whether or not the idea would be a goer or not. If it wasn't for people posting mindless off-topic dribble in this thread it would be MUCH easier for me to go through and collect these ideas to put into the Event Details post (which is for the moment just a summary of this thread to save others from the afore-mentioned dribble).

Here's an idea for an easy to organise, cheap to participate happening: The Gentlemen's Ultimate (or do I have to be PC and all it gentle persons' ultimate?)
You don't know what ultimate is? Well it involves a frisbee and some lawn for a field. Teams try to get the frisbee to the opponent's goal area (a big square if I'm correct.) Once you have the frisbee in your hand, you can't move but must pass it over to someone before it is taken from you.
Now all this sounds terribly sporty and that's why the gentleman's ultimate was born in the academic world. The two main points are that you can't run or jump and must have an open container (mug or pint is good, a bottle is not) of alcoholic beverage on your person.
The players will walk in the field competing for the frisbee and passing it around. If you take a running step or jump you will get some penalty time. One important aspect is that you must drink every once in a while from the mentioned container and must not spill the drink!
This may sound stupid at first but it's actually great fun in practice. The walking around calmly is absurd enough and the drinks make it even funnier. You can't really break a sweat so this should be an ideal low budget activity for us geeks.
Gentlemen's Ultimate is easy to setup, costs virtually nothing, fun to play and watch, splendid activity on a sunny day and easy to "uninstall."
Now who's in and what are your laws on public drinking? If there is interest I will translate the more exact rules to English ASAP.

The Rules of Gentlemen's Ultimate
(freely translated from the Finnish original at http://tik.cs.hut.fi/Muuta/Pelit/hmu.html. Apparently all credit for this game belongs to the Data Guild (http://tik.cs.hut.fi/) of Helsinki University of Technology (http://www.hut.fi).)
Teams
The game is played with two arbitrary sized teams. Most comfortable team size is about 4-6.
The Playing Field
The size of the playing field depends on the available space, the size of the teams and the condition of the teams. Goal areas are marked on the both ends of the field (when I played these were about 4x4 m squares.) Recommendable beddings are sand and grass.
The Playing Token
The playing token is an open product per player. The token must be in either of the hands or in the mouth at all times. The percentage (0-96) of the token can be decided by the player.
Some kind of a flying discus would also be nice.
The Playing Time
The length of the playing time is appropriate.
Some General Rules
Gentlemen's Ultimate imitates the rules of Ultimate. The flying discus (e.g. frisbee) is thrown from one player to another, so you cannot pass it in a chain from hand to hand. When an opponent takes the discus or hits it to the ground the offensive turn is changed over to the other team. You cannot move with the discus, except around the gate-leg(?) (a bit like in basketball.) The most significant difference to ultimate is that no one is allowed to run.
A referee can order a penalty on a player. Most common reasons for a penalty are:
Spilling the playing token
Taking running steps or jumping
Otherwise acting like a sportsman
The penalty is suffered next to the field for the time ordered by the referee (there are no official times, use common sense.)
Scoring
A goal is made by getting the discus in the hands of a player who is located in the opponent's goal area. After a goal sides and offensive turns are swapped.
Winning the game
The referee decides on the ending and winning of the game. There can also be moral winners in the game.
bah long thread.
back to movies idea: I thought 70mm version of 2001 a space odyssey (shown at cremorne orpheum) was rather special when i saw it.

They play that over here too but I think it's not suitable for the aristocrat inside us, hence the gentlemen's version. There's no way you'll see us running. :p If there's any other sports-related activity planned I suggest it will be toned down a little (notice how sportsmanlike activity is forbidden in GU.)
Besides it's morally wrong to spill "beverages."
We still need about 5-6 possible participants to make this a possible happening.

Departure would be on the 30th.
Ideas for things to do and see in Sydney and vicinity would be appreciated. Either in the mail or in this thread if they could be of value/interest to other participants. I think seeing Blue Mountains and/or some wildlife could be cool. cray had the brilliant idea of having a boat cruise for dinner one night.
we hire out a boat, get pissed, "cruise" around the harbour.
will anyone be in attendance who is under the age of 18?
thingy
18-03-2003, 01:57 PM
The biggest problem with this idea is the cost. There's a lot of companies that do harbour cruises, there wouldn't be any problems with those as far as age contstraints go, it's just that those under 18 would be refused alcohol. I've been on small ferries (tiny little fsckers) with alcohol provided by those in attendance (two stacks of cases as high as me, by the end there was 2inches of cardboard from the cases across the ENTIRE floor of the boat). Mad night that was. But once again, it comes down to cost. Most people don't have much money to spend, so with the amount we put on in one weekend for zmeets, everything (if not almost everything) has to be cheap.
I can investigate the pricing, but I think this will put an early end to this idea unfortunately. I'd love to do it but I doubt it'll come off. Plus then there's the whole thing of being stuck on the boat for the entire trip, not being able to leave if you're not enjoying it or turn up late without having to go to some obscure wharf or chase the boat down to a nearby one etc etc.

Regarding the confusion about the ZGeek cruise in another thread...does the event marked as "Harbour day" include cruising of the maritime variety? Looking at the map of Sydney and surroundings it looks like a spectacular place to go boating. And correct me if I'm wrong, you can/have to go to Manly by ferry? Can you enjoy beverages on those ferries?

The Manly ferry takes about 30 mins, and is not too bad, but other ferries around the harbour can give you a better "tour" as such. You can enjkoy beverages, but not of the alcoholic variety (apparently, we have fairly strict alcohol laws regarding watercraft)
I'm opposed to a Harbour Cruise as an official event, partly due to the cost, and partly because I'm claustrophobic after about 90 mins. But there are other harbour options, such as the ferries, which are pretty good if you want to go to the zoo or something like that :)
For those interested in the specialist opera house tour, which kind were you interested in? I'm guessing technical, but I'll have to know which one, and approx how many are interested in order to work out the costs.

Most likely there will be some people skipping post dinner pubbing, as there were last year - it's just not everyone's thing. We don't have to pub it *every* night, in fact I only recall one night last year when we did (most of the large quantities of alcohol were consumed at the then ZHouse :D).
Anyway, with only four months to go we really should get down to planning something a bit more concrete.

I was going to start the organising after the Excursion of Queens ... I'll probably do it in a similar way too. I would love to get some non-pub post dinner ideas (that's all I know being an alcoholic and all).
As far as places to stay, it's best to find those coming from your area (or others who are coming from interstate/overseas) and try and do group bookings etc - or talk Sydney people into letting you crash with them. :)

Splendid planning. I will try to dress up as touristy as I can so I'll fit right in at these seeing of sights tours. Phood and wine at the valley sounds pretty kickarse too, reminds me of certain winery tours in Hungary where we sampled the products until our lips turned blue.

Sorry but it's only a short stopover for refueling. I don't even know if we're allowed out of the plane to buy souvenir SARS masks or what. Same deal when flying back: at most it's a 1½ h
transfer/stop.
4 months to go!

Splendid planning. I will try to dress up as touristy as I can so I'll fit right in at these seeing of sights tours. Phood and wine at the valley sounds pretty kickarse too, reminds me of certain winery tours in Hungary where we sampled the products until our lips turned blue.

Yer, maybe Monday. [shrugs] Or depending on how long you're here for some time outside the global zmeet. [shrugs]
As for budgetary requirements, I shall have to get back to you on that once I've made a metric fuckload of phone calls - that information is definitely going to be included in the schedule though once it's more confirmed (and I actually have a clue as to costs). I must also do some cruising and check out how long it takes to get from point a to point b, scope out the public transport availabilities etc.

I arrive on the 14th. Little birds have told me that the Sydney Marathon is on that day. Sounds like a good way to recover from jetlag. Anyone else going? :p

I suggest an event of ZKaraoke at the global meet, either following or concurrently with the consumption of many alcoholic products for dutch courage.

"never commit karaoke" is among some of the little known but well heeded kleph rules. its nestled between "never pet a burning dog" and "never wake up in tijuana."

Karaoke is a noble Japanese art!
But that's ok..you don't actually have to commit it, you can sit and chortle at those who do.

Further to my suggestion from the other day, I discovered that karaoke happens at 9.30pm Saturdays at the Willoughby, which is the local tav for quite a few ZGeekers including the ZHouse and ZUnit, and is by all accounts quite a nice place to have a drink or six.
I would thus suggest that perhaps Saturday activities could be some explorerising adventuring during the day (I think that's what had been planned? It worked well last year), then dinner (I vote Pancakes at the Rocks. It is a tad on the pricey side but it's not outrageously expensive and the food is yummy - if it's the most expensive thing we do at the ZMeet I think that's pretty reasonable) AND THEN journey to the Willoughby for many beers and karaoke.
Just my 2c on things we can do though, feel free to tell me I'm a terrible event planner if you have a better plan in mind :p

I was actually going to investigate Karaoke places in the city for Saturday nights adventure. The reasoning behind this is that a fair few people complain about events being held in Zedwood as it makes it just that bit too hard for them to return.
Plus, if it's in the city, then after the Karaoke we have a multitude of choices for where to go afterwards, we are not limited to either continueing at the zhouse/zunit or heading in to the city once midnight comes and the Zedwood local shuts shop.
I know there's some places that do Karaoke in the Central / Surry Hills area of the city. Unfortunately I am not too fond of that part of the city so I am not all that certain of them. I shall get down to my research and confirming of the events next week when I am on annual leave.
I believe that The Empress Chinese Restaurant in York or Sussex Streets does Karaoke. At least they used to - I had to organise a work function, and they were about the only city place left that had it.
Cassa - a number of us disagree with your 'yummy' comment re Pancakes. When we went for Pirate's birthday last year, the food was cold and was pretty awful tasting. And it is more than a 'bit pricey' for that level of service.

I should hope the karaoke there is a LOT better than in here. I live above a karaoke bar most of the time and do not appreciate the howling. Luckily enough we can't hear anything from inside the bar but when it closes people feel like continuing the howling in the acoustic chute formed by our building, the building, and a cliff.
The only possible act of karaoke I can imagine being able to witness or commit is Bishi doing Prodigy's Firestarter (the legend tells he has actually done this) :D. Of course me being notoriously bad as listening to lyrics may have something to do with it. I don't usually listen to the words but perceive them as an instrument (especially if sung in a foreign language).
Nonetheless, if an event of "empty voice" is scheduled I think it is yet one of the things I will have to check out.
P.S. If pancakes are what I think they are how can there be a place dedicated to them? I mean they are the easiest and cheapest thing to make at home. Would be an ideal dish for a garden party sort of thing.

I need somewhere to stay. Weatherman's not coming down, so a hotel room is out of the question.
Anybody willing to put up with me for a few days?

And there was much rejoicing. I managed to pay my tickets today too so so the attendance probability is now 99%.
In completely unrelated news, the US Department of Defense just raised their DEFCON level to 4...

Unfortunately I'll miss it by about a week or so - I'll be in Sydeny from the 8th till the 17th but I do plan on meeting up with as many Sydney based ZGeeks as possible.
