and here is the same incident from inside the cockpit

If I remember rightly, the pilot made a slight error in not re-setting his altimeter for the local field elevation; flew the manoeuvre as per the book ... but was a couple of hundred feet low at the bottom of his loop.

As per Kelph's video too he tried fucking hard to save it ... and only punched out some 1.5 sec before impact.

and to top it all, there was USAF Staff Sgt. Davis's corker snap. He was in the control tower which the debris rolled into.

www.avweb.com/newspics/DavisTbirdEject.jpg

For the photographically inclined, Staff Sgt. Davis said he shot images with a Nikon D1X camera using a 300-mm lens with an aperture setting of 2.8 and shutter speeds of 1/1000 and 1/2000. For the now famous (and now official) shot, Davis "waited for the aircraft to level and clicked the shutter." And yes, he did experience some concern that the jet, which the Air Force says Stricklin turned away from the crowd, appeared instead to be directed at the tower. By his own account, the wreckage stopped just 100 feet shy of the tower's base.

this is the one i was looking for when this turned into the world's greatest crashes thread. nasa bought a 707 in the early 1980s and did what every red blooded american male has wanted to do since about the age of 12 or so - they crashed the fucker.

remember, there is someone driving that bad boy. dunno who he is but that mofo has the biggest hairyest pair of nads on the planet.

also... my ipod put on my life with the thrill kill cult's "sex on wheelz" when this clip was playing. fucking awesome.

I wonder what the dude flying it was thinking as he was coming... Now where the fuck did the stewardess say that oxygen mask is? Should I start the brace position now?

That 707 thang was a bit of a shot in the foot for NASA. There was much industry (and political) debate at the time about how to reduce the hazards of a crashed/crashing aircraft, and the anti-misting fuel faternatity had the stage for a while. The idea was that with an elixer of magical fuel additives that jet fuel could not ignite so readily and there would be a reduced fire risk, etc.

There was a lot of anti-change mentaility at the time ... would the fuel additives clog up engines etc or reduce fuel burn efficiencies ?. So after lots of hype, simple tests and the like NASA was pro-safety and pro-antimisting and did the big one of testing a 707 with the lovely new 'safer' fuel.

There was no crew on board but a remotely piloted thing; unfortunety the pilot fucked up the approach and pranged it early and skewed. In the vid you can see big metal structures designed to tear open the wings ... well the controlled crash went outside of its design parameters and whooooooh, fucking huge fireball.

As they say, a picture says a thousand words and the 'publicity' kicked the anti-misting additives lobby back into their holes.

I concur ... and the shuttle Challenger going pop on the way up was a corker too.

Although I suggest that the French have it for style ... when the A320 being demo'd on its public debut of its super computer driven flight control system inadvertantly landed into the trees at the end of the runway. I chuckle everytime I see (and hear) it.

this come via fark but it's hella cool. recently declassified WWII guncamera footage from allied aircraft in the europe.

http://betapundit.blogspot.com/2006/06/wwii-color-guncam-footage.html

the source site, world war II in color (http://www.ww2incolor.com/), is devoted to displaying the many color photos and film of the second world war that are now becoming available. it's pretty awesome, to put it mildly.
