Today i got a Star Trek desk calendar (the type where you tear off a page for each day). :D
As it has been 2004 for 26 days so far, the calendar cost me a mere $4.00 as opposed to the normal retail price of $24.95.
It made me a very happy man today :D

I'm getting published!

Well, sort of.

One of the markers for my Honours thesis wants to use extracts from it in his class. I'm one of three authors whose views on the relationship between media and government during the recent Gulf War are contrasted and analysed.

It's not exactly the New York Times bestseller list or an international political journal, but I suppose it's a start. :)

If there's any freelance graphic designers out there, you could relate to this.

I just sent my brochure that I have been working on for about 3 or 4 months now to the printer. Should be finished by next week! I am also currently finsihing up a website for the same company. Next is postcards. Plus I work as a typesetter as my steady income. All this work has made me quite tired, but I make time for ZGeek. Ok, I'm really at work when I'm looking at this but you know.

Even though it isn't much, this is my first professional client since graduating college, so this is all new to me. I still have alot to learn, but as I'm sure to all those who privately run a business, the first is always one of the best to get under your sleeve.

A proof cost 80 bucks and my client didn't want to spend it. It took 3 or 4 months, Lina because the client wanted to take the pictures herself and she didn't get them to me. Then I had to rush to meet the deadline, which was set out of nowhere also. I can't wait to see what the outcome will be.

I always factor proofs into my original quote so the client has no choice, there is just too much money involved for the client not to see (and sign off on!!) a proof, in my opinion :) Regardless of whether you see a proof sometimes the printer still stuffs up, or they pack the material when it's not quite dry...even though it's not your fault, you still have to tell the client and that's just not happy!

Good luck mate, hope it turns out super :D

Sounds like a normal one to me. I remember most brochures and annuals I've done to take about this amount of time. The send, wait for approval, change, resend, repeat, takes a long while.

80 buckos! Yikes where is this at? Sounds expensive, but then is are you taking about a full blow dummy or just a print proof.

I do the same, factor it in. If the print stuffs it, I forced them to redo it, since it's there mistake.

Well I also hope it turns out great. I remember my first freelance job. Was so excited and scared at the same time.

Now I'm worried that maybe I should've goten a proof. Its place called Sir Speedy and I chose there because I know someone there, but she's new and couldn't really hook me up with a deal as I had hoped. Man, if they fuck this up, I'm probably going to be in deep shit. But if it looks great, then there will be a big sigh of relief. What really didn't help was that I only had like a week/week and a half to get this printed, so I think that uped the price quite a bit.

I know the feeling. After eighteen years of education without a break, I picked up my honours degree yesterday, and then proceeded to get mildly intoxicated.

It was almost worth nearly getting blinded by the tassles on that damn hat.

The pic is me afterwards, and judging by my expression i'm apparently planning some form of world domination.

I'm not going to be paid much more than I'm being paid at the moment, maybe £10 or so a week (ok that's actually quite significant), but my job will be much more varied than it is currently and I'll be learning new things, so I'm chuffed to have finally escaped what is essentially a glorified helldesk position.

11 years and 9 months, so that 82.25 in 'dog' years, quite an innings don't you think, from your description of her aliments it's clear she is at peace now, hard to let go, but even harder to see her suffer right? will you get a young pup or will you give it some time first?

http://www.theage.com.au/news/Business/BHP-reports-first-gas-from-Minervas/2005/01/18/1105810883117.html?oneclick=true

BHP Billiton Ltd has reported first gas production from its Minerva field in Victoria's offshore Otway Basin.
Up to 500 barrels a day gross of stabilised condensate will also be produced.

Initial gas flow rates are expected to ramp up to contractual volumes by early next week after the full commissioning of the plant.

The bulk of the gas will be sold under contract to Pelican Point Power Station in South Australia, via SEAGAS new pipeline.

BHP Billiton said the Minerva development was part of the group's Eastern Australia Gas Strategy with Victorian gas supplying Victoria, Tasmania, New South Wales and South Australia.

I would just like to announce that at 11:57 last night, my best friend gave birth to her first child, a boy by the name of Benjamin-Patrick.

She had to be induced 2 weeks early, the labour took about 4 hours, and the baby had some breathing difficulties, but from what i'm told he's now fine and looks to be a healthy baby boy weighing in at a very respectable 5kgs - 11 pounds to those on the Imperial system -

Oh, and her husband was too faint to cut the cord, and had to lie down on the floor during the delivery, although he's now claiming it was because he had food poisoning. :p

Update:

Yesterday at lunch time I found out my intensive (half arsed) 8 day job seeking has come to an end.

In under 1 full business day I applied for, interviewed and was offered a job.

YAY me.

Dear zgeekers

I would like to announce that I am now in Paris livin' it up, Pigelle style :ride:

This morning I managed to lose not one but every fucking one of my credit and debit cards. Joy! This occurred in circumstances way too bloody stupid for me to recount here. Let's just say if they were giving out prizes for blondeness I'd get the pony.

For your viewing, here is a photo of myself doing my best impression of a mannequin outside Notre-Dame. I do not know who that chick was next to me but she sure was enjoying that bread.

Well, must fly. I have to go and beg for some change outside the Metro so I can get to a Western Union :D (thank god I bought a carnet of tickets yesterday!!)

Cheerio fun-makers!

The combination of these two statements is rather worrying. Pigalle is the old red-light district of Paris, and you lost your cards in a "blonde" fashion?
:Stripteas

Uberjealous, BTW. ;_;

Trust you to know the red-light district in Paris :D It is the old, current and I daresay future red-light area. I'm just up the road from Pigalle, thus the reference ;) I keep wandering down there because I'm told that there is on occasion massive blowup vaginas floating around and used as advertising but I'm yet to come across one of those (heh).

I was not, however, plying the trade at Pigalle when I lost my cards *pets Sutter*

Dear Bishi

Please force your work to send you to London on assignment and then hang out with me in a situation involving beer. However, if you have a tendency to put the word 'yeah' or 'right' on the end of every sentence please disregard the above.
