I don't say those thing you mentioned.
Are Girl. & still_life still down there?
Sounds smashing! Although you never answered about the 'yeah' or 'right' but I assume since you didn't tack them on to the ends of your written sentences the same applies for speech. Goodo.
Regarding Girl and still_life...no idea...I did PM Girl when I was in Paris but methinks she doesn't visit zgeek often as she has not answered. That or she does not wish to be seen with me in public :D

Excellent news!
There will be copious amounts of beer drunk when you come back.
I've drunk all sorts of beer in France. One made of seawater and another of honey...it was fantastic. But beer in Coburg is going to be better...get out the violin ma! :D

Perhaps a celebratory event at global zmeet (if the reappearance of Lina in Aus and global zmeet happen to coincide).
Another announcement: I was just offered a job here in London for three months. It sounds pretty challenging and I get paid 800 pounds a week. Oh, I do like those odds :ride:

800 pounds a fucking week? Those sound like some good odds even in the expensive land of London. Maybe I should consider moving there next year instead of aus.

Just wait til you hear what his thesis was on.Here we go... Well there were 6 chapters, and it took me 5.5 years (from mid-2000 to the end of 2005). It probably would have taken less time had it not been for zgeek and exceptionally fast internet. The field of study was 'experimental pharmacology' (experiments with DRUGS). I focused on the opiate class of drugs (e.g. morphine, heroin, codeine, pethidine, fentanyl, methadone, tramadol etc.) and addictive and gastrointestinal aspects of their actions. All the experiments used rats or parts thereof.
The full thesis is will be available for public reading in its entirety soon, some parts are published in journals already.
Chapter 1 was a big review of the literature on topics relevant to the lab experiments I did. The experiments themselves were described in chapters 2-5.
For Chapter 2 I sliced up rat brains very finely and examined them under some very high-power microscopes. I fluorescently stained the opiate receptors (where the drugs bind cause their effects on the body) in the sections using a rather cool technique. I looked mainly at brain regions that had already been implicated in addiction, and described the distribution of different opiate receptor types in nerves and other cells there. I also showed that some cells contained multiple opiate receptor types. This work formed part of an effort to find out the mechanisms of how opiate drugs cause their effects in the brain.
For Chapter 3 I tested some new experimental drugs in live rats to see if the they would alleviate the withdrawal symptoms of morphine (similar to that seen for heroin in Trainspotting, with the baby crawling on the ceiling). The structure of the test drugs was similar to short single-strands of DNA. These were designed to inhibit the production by the body of one of the opiate receptor types. The drugs seemed to have some good effects (reducing signs of withdrawal), but have the unfortunate problem of not penetrating biological membranes well. Hence, I had to inject the drugs directly into the rats' brains using an anaesthetic and a special surgical frame. Obviously this is not ideal, there are other scientists out there working on this problem. One reason why we want to alleviate opiate withdrawal effects is to help heroin addicts quit the smack.
Chapter 4 was similar to Chapter 2 except it was done on the small intestine instead of brains. I used a special technique whereby I dissected the very fine layers of the intestinal wall manually, rather than using a knife to make thin slices. The dissection part kinda looked like those microscope videos they show on news stories about IVF. After the subsequent tissue staining I did, the microscope images were quite spectacular. I could see the opiate receptors in nerves and other cells, and I could see where some cells contained multiple types of opiate receptors. Opiate drugs cause constipation and the effect is due to actions at these receptors. Understanding the mechanism of action could be useful in treating constipation and diarrhoea.
For Chapter 5 I used a device called an 'organ bath' to study the effects of opiates on the nerve-controlled musclular contractions in living small intestine tissue (taken out of rats). The organ bath could keep the tissue alive for a few hours as it contained a special mix of sugar and salts, and is bubbled with oxygen. I used some special opiate drugs that acted on individual opiate receptor types. I found that some opiate receptor types conveyed signals to inhibit muscular contractions, while other opiate receptor types did jack all in that respect. I also found and investigated some unexpected anomalies I had found with some of the test drugs. I used a |337 and rarely-used non-linear regression method to analyse the results.
Chapter 6 was a discussion in which I attempted to draw together the information gained from the experiments. The experimental chapters complemented each other nicely as I was able to discuss the results of the test-drug ('functional') chapters in the context of the microscope (histology) chapters, & vice versa. There was also a bit of discussion about how the the new info fit with previous reports.
The fundamental challenge was in dealing with the never-ending stream of problems, including technical difficulties leading to massive setbacks. Finding that your month-long experiment had completely fucked up for the umpteenth time (despite you having taken incredible care) was something that you had to learn to accept as part of a normal 'failure rate'. Perks included a tax-free scholarship, and conferences, where I presented my work; New Zealand (2001), San Francisco (2002), Sydney (2003), Brisbane (2004). I'm taking a bit of a break from research for a while now, though.
PM me if you'd like to read some of the papers, I'm off to see my shrink now.

Congratulations on having 4 kitties instead of 1. It sucks about the staining of the bedclothes, but on the bright side it shows your cat thinks where you are is the safest place in the house.

2 weeks ago I decided to quit 'after work' drinking. I used to have a couple of beers after work to relax, but it invariably turned into more out of a combination of stress and being a little drunk. After 2 full strength beers, it's easy to go "Ah, well. I'll just have one more. I did have a tough day, after all".
I still drink when I'm out at a party or whatever, but I don't drink for the sake of drinking :)

I am hoping for a happy, healthy, well behaved, likes to sleep the whole night through, easily sated and self-reliant youngling - I'm not overly concerned if they dress in blue or pink :)

Congratulations! Take my advice, buy the cd "sounds of silence" and breast feed (my kid always slept best on boob milk)! Bet you change your mind about the self-reliance once he/she learns how to open the front door (yes that's a road with cars on it), get their own biscuits (biscuits are not a food group kid!), put on their own moisturiser (oops that's shampoo), dress themselves (no naked is not an option in public), whether they wear pink/blue is the easy part!

Just got back from a holiday overseas in Samoa and Vietnam. Managed to finally get engaged to the missus while in Samoa. Can't tell you how nervous I was but, she said "Yes" and it was in an absolutely beautiful spot where we had the whole beach to ourselves so I can't ask for more.
Not only this, but it was the other half's birthday the other day and on Saturday she graduated uni and is now officially a doctor, so it has been a big month for us. Anyway. My camera is pretty crappy, so below is the jeweller's photo of the ring and also a photo we took of where it happened.

I am pretty sure no-one will remember me but in honor of not having my profile deleted even though I haven't posted for over a year I thought I would make an announcement.
I had a mini geek almost 16 months ago, he's called Robbie and he is

I am moving to a house as of October 8th and am leaving my partner of 4.25 years. We decided last week that there was no point in trying any longer since he doesn't want to get married and doesn't support my new business. Feeling sad but at the same time it will take away all the aggro between us and our conflicting ideas! And I have a new housemate and will have a cat soon.

man, I wanna know how you worked out the .25 :D
You're a star Sky, you'll zoom thru life and do great things and this time next year you'll go "wow, did that only happen last year? it feels like it was years ago!" and THEN you'll become a famous milliner who also helps run a hotel AND OWNS A LOLCAT. :D

I suddenly got the mental image of Sutter wearing a tube top and standing in the audience of Jerry Springer.
I'm not sure what to read into that.
