As some of you already know, Stocking and I are heading overseas at the end of April. We're going to Japan for a few days before flying to Los Angeles, where we'll spend about a week before renting a car to drive to San Francisco then Las Vegas on the way back to LA. Then we're flying to Washington and will work our way up to New York, then to Toronto before heading off to the UK and Europe. We plan to live and work (pending my ancestry visa) in England for a while - maybe a year or two.

Before we go, I'll be selling my car (a 1999 Nissan Pulsar with all the extras), but will be driving it to Perth so it will be sold there ... any Perth geeks interested can email me.

And while we're away, we wanna meet 'n' greet as many US- and UK-based ZGeekers as we can - email me (soc at zgeek dot com) and we'll work out an arrangement!

Nowhere near as exciting or cool as SOC's news, but I did
kick ass on my first year University exams, which was a
pleasant surprise considering I went back to Uni 4 years
and copious amounts of marijuana after leaving school with
worse than average results.

congrats dude. i myself am going to continue uni this semester but go back to doing it part time. i'm planning on working around uni this year, so i've got money to do a bit of travelling at the end of the year. maybe to america, or sydney.

My 11yr old daughter won the regional "Reflections" contest in music for this school year!

The subject was courage. There were several art catagories:literature, artistic, photography and music.

She wrote a song, sang and recorded it on cassette.
2nd place winner had a music program on her computer, wrote the sheet music and burned the music. SHE came in second.

They are going to the state level now...I'll let you know if she wins

I'm very proud!:o ;)

she recorded it to cassette and turned it in.

I can get her handwritten copy....now see darn it if I could work that damn mac! it has itunes on it!

should be okay. macs are allegedly good for multimedia, and sound is multimedia, so you should be okay at importing (well maybe your daughter should be okay importing) audio into a crapinsto...er, macintosh ( :D ) and saving it as some form of audio file.

my 50 year old aunt is going to die this afternoon/tonight after a long battle with cancer that she didn't tell her husband about.

this hits him hard because a few years ago, his daughter died in a car accident. his other daughter took this fairly hard as well.

one person who is REALLY going to be affected is my 18 year old cousin. last week, his grandfather (the one i'm not related to) died. i can't remember what from though. 2 days later, his best friend's father died. so that's 2 funerals he's been to within 3 days.

i think my family and i will be expected to make the trip to rockhampton for the funeral. i don't particularly want to go, because i don't feel as though i fit in with my relatives. sure, it's tragic that my aunt is dying in the next few hours (all her organs are shutting down one by one). but a death doesn't hit really get me upset unless it's someone i'm really close to. call me insensitive if you will, but i find it hard to be close to someone who lives 650km away from you who you never talk to.

I have been in the same situation some months ago. My grandfather lived down south in a place called rockingham and he died in november last year. I hadn't seen him for ages and never really had that much interest, but as he was technically family, i went to the funeral to support my family.

just go for your family's sake.

utopian
23-01-2003, 08:31 PM
some time this afternoon she slipped into unconsciousness. at about 7 o'clock tonight she died in her sleep after all her major organs failed. she wasn't in pain (which was good). my uncle stayed with her for a considerable amount of time after she died. it's now just him and his daughter in the immediate family now. i know that he won't remarry.

i've never been a big fan of doing something just because it's family. and i've never been a big fan of going to rockhampton.

me2
26-01-2003, 12:12 AM
Some things you do whether you like them or not.
Unfortunately, the world doesn't revolve around you, so sometimes you have to go to Rockhampton even when you don't want to.

My commiserations to you and yours.

utopian
26-01-2003, 12:32 AM
i know the world isn't about me (it'd suck if it was).

while i'm sure my mum would appreciate the support (it was my mum's sister in law, so the aunt wasn't related by blood), she's there to support her brother. i shouldn't have to be there to support the supporters. otherwise it's some stupid chain of support. and that's stupid.

ok, so i've been drinking port. sue me. all i'm saying (and this may sound selfish) is that i have absolutely ZERO motivation for going to rockhampton to see yet another dead family member. that's like 4 now. and the only one that mattered to me was my grandfather. when you live 650km away from your family, it's hard to be close to them unless you see them fairly often and have huge talks with them.

me2
26-01-2003, 12:48 AM
Yeah... I wasn't trying to criticise, was just supplying reason why you had to go, even though you don't want to.

Hope you get through supporting the supporters okay.

after about 2 months of unemployment I've finally got another contract tomorrow in Epping; also have an inside lane on a helpdesk job all thanks to nepotism (I feel so dirty). At last I can pay some rent & bills. Was getting to the point where I considered either donating bone marrow or going on the dole. I really don't want to go on the dole.

Don't worry, my hopes are not up. I haven't even met her, only spoken to her online and on the phone.
List of geekiness she has:
She likes Sci-fi (big fan of star trek, but not a trekkie)
Can speak and understand 1337 speak
Plays games
Goes to LANs
She uses the word "w00t"

Amazing.... :D

I am engaged to the love of my life.
Known her for about three years now, been more-than-friends-but-not-quite-together type thing for ages, got together, and now we're going to marry and have little ones.
Not right now, though. The little ones bit, not the marriage bit.
So yeah.

Well, I got some exciting news today.
I got myself a new job! So now I can leave the shitty, low-paying crap job I hate, and start my apprenticeship (which of course will also be crap paying, but at least I will be doing something I want to do!).
It's a Diesel Mechanics Apprenticeship with Toll Logistics. I will get to work with big trucks! *grunt grunt grunt*
It's kinda scarey cause it's something I know fuck all about, but at the same time it's really exciting because I will be doing something completly different to what I have come to hate (working inside an office) and it's something I really want to learn.

Man, I was so stoked today when I found out... I was like jumping all over the place at work :D

My last day at my current job will be Wednesday, which is also my birthday :p

I just got a letter from my mother who told me a year ago that she wasn't having anything to do with me. She told me that my brother who was adopted out at birth, has contacted her. My brothers have met him, and my sister has stayed at his home and met his family.

She told me she would only give him my phone number if he said he wanted to contact me.

How should I take it? Do I have a right to feel as pissed off as I do?

heh, okay - I tackled a chick who had the ball, dodged an opponent, came up on the left side of the goal and took the shot with my right foot and the ball just flew in. It was everything I wished for when I dreamed of scoring. I was worried it'd just be a lame roll in but it wasn't .... eeeeeee! Btw, I'm a left forward, I play right as well but I'm decent with my left leg so that's why I go on the left. It's my second season now and I love it :) Heh, and there are no changing rooms at Bonnet Bay. We had to get changed outside ;) Actually, I didn't have time to change, cos I had to go on the harbour bridge climb. So I was lame by the time I got home, but happy :) And now I can have new boots!!

I'd like to announce that Twist & I are *finally* moving tomorrow!

Roddez has kindly offered to help us out with stuff, and to stay at the house while I go between the storage place & our new home. (I don't want to leave it unattended, especially once the comp & electronic equipment go in).

Living with my family has been driving me mad, and I will be glad to have some *space* again.

I went to the antennatal (sp?) clinic at the Hospital for a checkup today, and had more tests done.

Today was truly riveting, it involved me going into the toilet with a huge swab and having to scrap a sample of myself onto it before carefully placing it in a sterile tube for evaluation.

Next week, more blood sugar tests.

Tri-national.

If you get three I will have to try and claim Canadian, and then find a foreigner to marry . It is like an arms race where nobody gets hurt except the seams on our passport wallets. American citizenship was the easiest to get for me, even though my claim was probably the weakest. They didn't really seem to care, and when I went back for the fourth time they were more like "oh, you put in a lot of effort, here you go dude," than "err, you didn't show any proof that your parent was in the country after her 18th birthday".

One problem you will have is finding a cool container to put them in. I have a two passport holder with little see-through windows to them. It is slick and easy to slip into my pocket, but it doesn't fit three so the Australian one gets relegated to the non-existant middle compartment and doesn't get a snug home. I've tried finding a better wallet with seperate compartments for 3, but I've never found one. If you find one, you must send me it!

Also, this one is obvious, don't tell any embassies/consulates/whatevers that you have so many citizenships. When I claimed mine I never told them that I was a citizen of another country. In airports, I just show the passport that most closely corresponds to the country I'm going to, not the one I'm in. But the most important thing is to find me a cool 3 compartment wallet.

Took the dog for a walk. The surgery is not going to be arthroscopy as far as I know at the moment. The clavacle is tipped downward, parts of the tendon are basically shredded, also found a bit of calcium deposits and arthritis.
Two more days and I'm out for a while.

Anyway, I'm not really complaining about the six weeks, I'm on medical leave from work and trying very hard not to return to work at all.

i actually have a few announcements that have come to pass in the last few days.

1) One of my tracks, 'Soul Release', is going to be used in the last scene and over by a group of Sydney based documentary makers in a film they made while off-road rollerblading through the Himalayas that will be shown in a few film festivals around the world.

2) There is a very good possibility that within the next few weeks I will be moving back to night shift. Which means that my VW project might actually be going somewhere soon

3) I finally hit my target weight of 88kgs (which is the heaviest I have ever weighed) and I have now started my weight and fitness training to get some bulk, strength and endurance up for my return to competition basketball

I would just like to announce that, on Monday, November 3rd, in the year 2003 A.D., at 1:25 pm, I officially handed in my thesis, thereby completing my Honours degree.

Now nobody else may care much about this, but this is pretty significant to me personally, since it concludes 18 straight years of education without a break.

At least now I can add (Hons) after my name, though.

Right now I’m going to sleep, then I’m going on holiday, and when I return, I intend to get:

* A job
* Drunk
* Laid

Not necessarily in that order.

Any and all congratulations, flaming, and jokes about how I will function in the real world are hereby solicited.

P.S. The dancing monkey avatar is really annoying, I know. I’ll change it when I get back. I promise.

I work in a noodle restaurant, and due to the fact that a lot of customers at work are asking for a sauce that we haven't had in a few months, my boss has decided to replace it with something that has a similar idea behind it but doesn't taste the same. The taste that the old sauce had was horrible. It smelled alright, but the taste was far too overpowering. It was some sort of coconut and exotic spices thing that neither tasted of coconut or spices.

It's now being replaced by a coconut curry that I've been making for myself on my break for about the last month and a half. That means that a meal of my creation is on the menu. The best thing about it is that it tastes absolutely delicious.

Good shit. Any chance of getting you to send some down so we can give it a try? :)

utopian
04-11-2003, 01:07 PM
That will prove to be tricky, as my boss has a strict "don't sell the sauces on their own" policy. So I doubt I'd be able to get the required curry. Although, it was suggested to me by one of my co-workers that there is a certain type of curry paste which is similar to the one that we make that's available in supermarkets. I'll ask him about it tonight, and see what I can do about it.

The alternative is that Global Meet 3.0 is held in Brisbane and we book a table for 20 on a weekend. Plenty of other styles for those who don't like curry or coconut.

So I'll see what I can do.

Some sad news, my cat 'Wave', an abyssinian died at 12.25pm today. He was aged 11 years. It's funny how such an animal (an antisocial one at that!) can become such a fixture and loved one in your life. He was there through it all. Stupid cat.

I would like to announce that I am now the proud owner of the most powerful stock Commodore Amiga Computer that was ever built -- the awesome AMIGA 4000/040!!!

I picked it up on eBay for $455. This will become the pinnacle of my Amiga collection, which also currently consists of 2x Amiga 1000's and an Amiga 2000.

It should also refute accusations that I have 'gone to the dark side' by recently purchasing an Atari STe 1040 last week for $11 at a pwAn shop auction.

Imp and other Amiga fans (pref. hot chixx like Imp) are welcome to 'view my collection'. (omg is that a fat Agnus in ur pocket?) heheh.

Wow ... it's interesting how plans can change once you get under way! I posted this in January, it's now December and so far our trip hasn't quite gone exactly as we foresaw it. But that's life. And it HAS been an interesting year.
