View Full Version : Acceptable Amount to Drink

After reading the Favourite Spirits thread I was just wondering - what is an acceptable amount to drink? What is suitable for a night at the pub? What is suitable for a wedding? How about a night on the town? With a restaurant dinner?
On a regular night at the pub, usually Tuesday and Thursday nights, I'll have about 20 pots and maybe a few Canadian Clubs after that or some shots in between and what have you. I rarely drink too much at dinner as I enjoy food too much - wouldn't want to be too drunk to enjoy it. Maybe a bottle of wine or two. What are your usual habits?

A night at the pub is 3 or 4 standard drinks I think. A wedding is all out until you start to stumble. Then its wise to stop.
A night on the town has no limits other than on the DD. And a restaurant dinner is 1-2 standard drinks. Those are my acceptable amounts anyway.

See the above-mentioned Favourite Spirits thread I suggest, as I clearly stated I do. I love it. Many people do. I hate the sweetness of Bourbon. I'll often have a Scotch though.
I don't see any reason to have more than a few social drinks, what's the point of getting pissed to the point were you are no longer in control of yourself?
I bet someone will say it's fun to get pissed, Fun to make a fool of yourself?, fun to spew over your girlfriend?, fun to get thrown out of the pub?, fun to get into a fight (twitch is not required to answer this question), just what sort of fun is that?

At the pub I'll usually spend about $100 on booze at an average of $6-7 a glass.
Most i've ever drunk at a wedding was 6 bottles of wne. Serves them right for having a set of speeches that ran for almost an hour.
As for your original question, no I don't know what acceptable alcohol consumption is.

Depends on your tolerance really, I can't have more than about 3 drinks without being para!

It depends on the circumstances. I don't think there's an acceptable amount to drink, rather acceptable standards of behaviour in given social settings. I wouldn't want to get as shattered at dinner as I might at a wedding. I wouldn't get falling-down-drunk at night out at the pub, but I might get totally hammered on a footy trip.

this is kind of a deceptive question. if you go out for a regular meal at a restaurant, maybe three beers will be about right. of course that's a lot different than going out clubbing.
but if you go out for an evening at a decent restaurant - one with a sommelier - the number of drinks could be greater because you will be consuming them as you are eating. which will substantially alter your ability to get drunk.
typically you will start with a pre-dinner drink or coctail, say, an old fashioned. this gets you to the table where you will probably order a bottle of wine before the entree. most likely this will be a white. then you will complete that course and order another bottle to go with the entree. this will likely be a red. if the meal is substantial and there are more than four people, two bottles with dinner is not out of the question. after dinner, you will likely have a dessert and, with it, a dessert wine or liqueur like drambuie.
all told, you have blown apart that little index posted above, but, given the amount you ate and the amount of time involved, it would be a perfectly reasonable amount to have drank.

5 glasses of wine (1 bottle) is normally my standard if I'm out or at a party - I hit my limit then and physically can't bring myself to drink anymore. I don't think that's a huge amount.

I have no tolerance as my appearance on IRC last night showed.
Last night I drank about 1 bottle of wine and 1 girly drink. I was smashed.
I find at dinner, 2 glasses of wine is acceptable, not drinking alcohol is also acceptable.
When you're out, its a good idea to wait until the majority have finished their glass before you start on your next one. Its a good idea of regulating yourself.
Weddings is probably a cross between the two

Well last Wednesday I had a big night out on the drink. A few of us were invited to a function with free drinks. When the announcement that the tab would be over in 10 minutes came we each got ten pots and hovered over them for 30 minutes or so. I should've had another question in my original post, regarding when the alcohol is free - I feel nobody should be limited when that's the case.

Yeah depends on the occasion, your alcohol tolerance and your judgement.

See here if you think you may have a problem..
http://psychcentral.com/library/alcohol_sx.htmAccording to this I have a serious problem, but it's with coffee.
I generally accept 1/2 a bottle of wine over dinner to be enough. I don't drink beer over dinner usually. I'll have 4 light beers at home on gaming night (when my video card is not at the manufacturer being warrantied) or during the football on a Saturday or Sunday. If I go out I'll withdraw however much I'm willing to spend from the bank at the start of the night and when that's gone, I've had enough. If the beers are free (ie. wedding or other function), I'll drink a couple then dance until there's a shit song, then drink a couple, then dance until there's a shit song, (repeat).
It wasn't always this way, however. Once upon a time I used to try to pour as much piss down my throat as possible at all times until I passed out. I've mellowed in my old age. Apparently livers are self-healing (I hope they're right).

Boobmeister, this is probably why when I suggested that swimming in the Yarra would get rid of your hiccups, you agreed and went swimming...[sorry I don't have photographs, I had a "metric fuckload" of cougar and cola that day too and lost my phone with the photographs on it]. You get that when you party with the boobmeister :w00t:

I drink very slowly :D
I rarely drink to get trashed, that happens maybe once or twice a year - if that. I drink for the social pleasure I get just from being with people who's company I enjoy. Plus, I can't drink cold drinks.. so I'm happier drinking stuff at room temperature :D
The only time I'll drink more than my standard 1 an hour (somemtimes it's even 1 every hour and a half..) is when I'm doing shots. Then it's a drinking free-for-all :D
