How much fibre do you ingest in a day?

I worked out today (and I was trying hard to eat foods with fibre) that I ingested 19.7 grams of fibre. Fibre helps lower cholesterol.

According to wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dietary_fiber) the recommended is "20-35 g/day for a healthy adult depending on calorie intake." - somewhere else I read suggested "13 kilojoules (3 kilocalories) per gram of dietary fibre ingested".

The muffins I ate which are special high fibre ones gave me 6.6g of fibre (i had 2 of them), I got some fibre from rice cakes, a risotto i had for lunch, a fruit roll bar thing, and some from a lotsa noodles cup of soup. I also got a reasonable amount from the lasagne and the chocolate pudding I had for desert.

I'm thinking that in a normal day I wouldn't get anywhere near that much fibre....

So zgeekers, what do you eat to get your RDI of fibre? and do you even pay attention to it or care?

Don't usually pay attention, but at approx. 1 meal per day with the occassional snack I'd say it's way below 20-35grams

I'd probably hit 20 - 25 grams most days. Porridge for breakfast. Fruit (apples, pears & mandarins mainly) through the day, Usually either a roast beef (cold cut) and salad or a tuna & salad sandwich on whole grain bread for lunch and stir-fries, pasta dishes, casseroles etc with plenty of vegies in them for dinner (had rabbit stew the other night - awesome).

Brown rice is the the best. Or next time you make a soup or bolognaise, put some v finely chopped celery in with it.

I'm pretty sure I do, I usually eat three tins of baked beans a day, at lunch and usually throw them in a burrito, and according to Heinz they're high in fibre add to that the weat-bix for brekky each day and it's a high fibre diet.

for those lacking in fibre, 1 tblspn psylium husk on your breakfast cereal or mixed in with a glass of OJ does wonders.

i currently have no idea why my shits are perfect. they sure as hell shouldn't be.

I've got a prescription here for Normacol granules (http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/medicines/100001877.html), i believe they're a fibre supplement.

Yeah, thats why I'm taking it and trying to up my daily intake.

I figured since there are a few IBS sufferers on zgeek this thread would benefit them :D

Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Lack of Fibre can exacerbate it.

I get what I think is my correct daily amount, I don't monitor it, but most of the foods I tend to eat are somewhat fibre laden.

daily amount depends on calories
you should get at least 25g

I'm taking fibre supplements.
I have to say, my shits have never been easier.

Unfortunately it appears I don't have IBS, just a broken down gallbladder.

I will work it out later how much fibre I eat per day, but I think it will be above/around the normal .

For breakfast I have a couple of slices of wholemeal toast, or a bowl of raisin wheats. Mid morning I'll have a pack of Ryvita minis ( I love those things, especially the chilli ones )
Lunch - I will have some sort of fruit ( banana or apple, sometimes prunes - I think prunes are awesome, but I dont eat them so I poop easier ) and more often than not some sesame crispbreads and some sort of topping ( tuna / salad / chicken )

Dinner depends on how lazy I am . I used to be into soup when the weather was cold, but now I'll have whatever is easiest , so brown rice, veggies , chicken etc.

I try and keep my fibre intake fairly high since it helps keeps my IBS symptoms at bay. Once I add things up, will be interesting to see how much I actually do consume per day.

Check out the google article for a guide on what your RDI of fibre should be

I don't put much faith in RDI

I think It's based on 2000 Calories, and an unweighted average of a set group of people (probably North Americans, one of which I am not as far as I know) What If I'm at the extreme end of either of those averages.

I rely on 'gut' feel, literally ;)

It's not really that dependent on calories, although I could imagine overall bulk of food being an issue. It's also difficult to get enough fiber if you're not consuming much overall :) Unless you're on supplements.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dietary_fiber

The American Dietetic Association (ADA) recommends a minimum of 20-35 g/day for a healthy adult depending on calorie intake (e.g., a 2000 cal/8400 kj diet should include 25 g of fiber per day). The ADA's recommendation for a child was that intake should equal age in years plus 5 g/day for children (e.g., a 4 year old should consume 9 g/day). No guidelines have yet been established for the elderly or very ill. Patients with current constipation, vomiting, and abdominal pain should see a physician. Certain bulking agents are not commonly recommended with the prescription of opioids because the slow transit time mixed with larger stools may lead to severe constipation, pain, or obstruction.

The British Nutrition Foundation has recommended a minimum fiber intake of 12-24 g/day for healthy adults.

I use the floating shit metric. If my shit floats = OK. Sinking shit = more fibre.
