View Full Version : Is this a breach of data protection act and can I seek compensation?
Yeah so I got an email from one of my uni applications. I was disgusted to see that this email came packing a huge list of addresses. They had obviously sent it as 1 masive email to almost allapplicants for the department instead of a seperate email for everyone. Even disregarding how unprofessional and fucking stupid this looks, is it also breaching any data protection laws? I might not want Mr X knowing that i'm applying for this course etc.
So what do you reckon, could I obtain a small settlement?

People who sue over shit like that are pathetic and are the ones who make dues go up in the first place. Its school thats the way they do it deal with it.

Someone used CC rather than BCC, it's an easy mistake and taking things further could cause someone to loose their job. Let's not turn into a mini America (everyone sueing everyone else).
Tell then about their mistake. If you're concerned it might affect your placement send it annonymously.

Alernately, use the email addresses that you received and a little SMTP header spoofing to send rejection notices to your competition.
haha nice idea dwarfy! I'd like to point out now that it's not my uni application, it's my friends. And I probably wouldnt bother sueing anyway, it IS a bit lame.

I believe you'll find it's a case of etiquette rather than any manifest duty of confidentiality. Presumably, it would depend on the nature of the email's contents, but then, wouldn't you expect information of a sensitive nature to be distributed on a more personal basis?
Nice backpeddling
Don't you know it
The ASS has the idea.
