*Not sure if this should go in Bitching & Rants... move it if you think it's necessary.*

So I see this advertisement for an Apprentice Boat Builder. Now, being in my early 20s and in need of a new career path, this caught my attention. I don't know a great deal about boats or boating, but it's something I could definitely take a huge interest in.
So I call up the number.

They tell me I need a Job Seeker ID to apply. 'Really?' I say, 'I don't have one.'
'Well, you can apply anyway, but they'll really only look at applications with Job Seeker ID's. You stand a way better chance with one'
'Ok, how do I get one?'
'Alright, are you unemployed currently?'
'No'
'Do you work more than 15 hours per week'
'Yeah I do'
'I'm afraid you're not eligible for a Job Seeker ID, it's really aimed at those people who are unemployed or on welfare etc.'
'So I can't apply for this job?'
'Well you could send in your resume and a cover letter anyway, but they really only consider applications with Job Seeker IDs'

Are you FUCKING KIDDING ME? I'm not allowed to apply for the Apprenticeship because I work more than 15 hours a week! All because it's listed on the Government's JobSearch website! If it was listed somewhere else, that would be fine they tell me! But for the government listed jobs, you need the little number, and to get the number, you have to be essentially unemployed!
Unfortunately these types of jobs seem to be extremely rare and not listed that often.
I've emailed a local reputable Boat Building firm asking for any info they can give me on the profession (not exactly asking fora job straight up), but this situation is just ridiculous.

So anyway, if anyone here is in the industry or knows someone who is, or even has any info etc. on it that would be cool. Or if you know one who is looking for a very capable and willing to learn new employee that would be even better.

Also, if anyone knows where Kevin Andrews the Minister for Employment lives, I'd like to have some very stern words with him.

That's a bit fucking harsh, not to mention short sighted isnt it? You seem to vigorusly dislike prople on the dole from the tone of your post, yet you dont want somethng to help them get off it. Anyway where do you get off saying everyone on the dole cant hold down a job?

People keep going on about equal employment, there is nothing equal about that.

I feel like putting an ad in the paper offering a job with the words 'White convict Australians need only apply' then right below that I'll put we are en equal opportunity employer.

That would stir the pot.

ok, that was a bit harsh. *edited*

I'll willingly admit I have in the past been an 'unemployed piece of shit', but I had no problems getting a job and holding one down when I needed one. I never said everyone on the dole can't hold down a job either. My point is that I am being openly excluded from embarking on a new career path by the government because I choose to support myself by working a job rather than being handed out government assistance.

The reason they wont consider you without a Jobseeker ID is the government kickback the employer gets.

it's a government incentive to employers to hire long term unemployed, the government will pay the employer part of new employees wages for 12 or 16 weeks or something.

*This may not be that case anymore, it's been a while since I was considered "long term unemployed" (I was studying full time for 3 years)

From a stretch of unemployment I went through a while back I developed the opinion that any job that has that requirement was offering money that was substandard in every way when compared to every equivalent job on the open market.

Bit tough on you that it was a pretty rare opportunity tho :(

Personally, I say good for them. I was long-term unemployed. It has taken me FOUR years on the dole - for quite a few stretches living off as little as $40 a week (Thyrd can attest to that) - and the job you were applying for WAS on the Centrelink/Jobsearch website so what do you expect.

Not to mention since you apparently have "no problem getting a job and holding one down when you needed one" you would have a decent looking list of stuff on your resume, so you could have applied for one of the multitude of non Jobsearch apprenticeships/traineeships that are advertised all over the fucking place for your new career path without trying to poach from the one resource that the long-term unemployed actually have a shot at getting a job.

In summary, you are a bitch!

That is all.

I came into this thread thinking it was about Seeker, but no one has even mentioned him.

I am fairly sure that what Holster says is still the case.

Why don't you unchain him from your bed and he can come and answer for himself.
