C'mon people, suggest a location or it'll be at the Metropolitan again!
tomsyman
29-05-2006, 05:53 PM
I should be able to make it. Metropolitan is the best pub, everything else in town in expensive shite.

I've never been in any of these places... opinions please:
http://www.sydneypubguide.net/pubs/Crown.aspx - Crown
One of the clubs I go to is hosted in this place, its multi leveled but i dunno its atmosphere for a pub
http://www.sydneypubguide.net/pubs/Republic.aspx - Republic (wynard)
I've been here before, its kind of cosy when I went it was quet and the beer garden was cool
http://www.sydneypubguide.net/pubs/Australian_(Broadway).aspx - The Australian (Broadway)
(pliskin tells me thats where purple sneakers is as well??)
If we're going to go to broadway we could always go to the landsdown?
This one is right in the city near the windsor (and REALLY close to my work)
http://www.sydneypubguide.net/pubs/Criterion.aspx - Criterion (CBD)
I want an idea of if you guys would mind going to newtown or not so I have a scope of where to go for a drink.

You do not want to go to the Hunter Bar....
It turns into a hip hop club

OK, stricken from the list :D

The Criterion is a complete skank-hole but I don't actually mind it for all that.
The Australian (Abercrombie in fact) is where Purple Sneakers is held and it's fairly decent pub but I don't know what the crowd is like on Friday evenings now on account of that.
The Republic can get a bit wanky but it's ok (not as bad as the drycleaners anyway).
There's a few places down Pitt St between Town Hall and Central that aren't too bad as well (if someone could supply some names; I've been to them, I just don't remember what they're called).
Anyone been to Three Wise Monkies lately? Before the tryhard crowd comes out to play I mean.

Great Southern down the central end of George st is ok. Could go to the raped Century tavern.

Pure Platinum on Pitt is pretty good. A bit pricey though.

I like the look of the outside of this pub, very art deco!!
And some of the guys who used to work at century work at great southern now....
Whats it like inside?
Glompbot

OK
So far the ones that more than just one person can agree on are:
Great Southern
Criterion
Abercrombie

The Aussie is a great pub - top food and they have their own beer! The Glenmore (next door) is also very fine but a bit small. There is always the Lord Nelson...

wrong Australian. Sapia has been reading Sydneypubguide.net and is referring to the Abercrombie (used to be the Australian), which has turned more into a club than a pub, and i don't think would be a good place. If you're going to go to braodway go to the Clare.
Glompbot
30-05-2006, 10:02 AM
Yeah, I was talking about the australian that is down near broadway...
I went there when it used to be called the australian on a friday night ages ago and it was quite cosy... and reasonably empty...
Glompbot
30-05-2006, 10:03 AM
To be honest though, i'm quite partial to the criterion or great southern...
If the place sucks its not a far walk to other places.

How about the Windsor (cnr of Park and Castlereagh St)?
The pool tables upstairs are always good for a laugh with a group of ppl.
Glompbot
30-05-2006, 10:33 AM
They have door bitches - always a bad sign.
We could always go to the criterion, and then the windsor if we don't like one/the other.

Why not make everyone happy and gather in a park and drink out of bottles in brown paper bags? cheap and the atmosphere of slight fear and the smell of urine would be a delight for all. Seriously, what about 'The rose' or is that place crap now?

Only a $5 cab ride from most of town, but yeah bit of a mission, and I think some Americans bought it, and there isn't a cat there that likes to hang around like there used to be, I think it died of happyness from being patted so much by all the friendly drunks *sad*
Glompbot
30-05-2006, 11:09 AM
Yeah, its a bit far though
I'd rather walking distance since it is AFTER WORK drinks.
(plus I have no money and won't be drinking... so yeah, a taxi ride is out)

What about the Sports Bar at the menzies Hotel? That is still in town yet not very classy.

The Clare is crap on a Friday night, it's so full of drunken students you can barely move, and it gets way too hot inside.

i went to this place with some work people on a Thursday a few weeks ago http://www.sydneypubguide.net/pubs/Chamberlain.aspx. Seemed nice without being wanky, and not too crowded.
This also doesn't sound too bad in the review http://www.sydneypubguide.net/pubs/Crown.aspx - anyone been here lately?

I have just realised that I won't be able to afford to drink, but I will still attend. I did a miscalculation on my budget for the month and am flat broke.
Due to even more stupidity i have to return to sydney AGAIN because i can't search immigration records after 1910 online (its a long story). So count me in as an interloper.

I'd also like to say I wish I had gotten photos of the other people to show up
Like Pliskin and Redman.
Pliskin came as I was dying to go home, and Redman had about 4 'welcome back/catch up drinks' to go to that night
So, the chaimberlain is a pretty good pub IMHO, I didn't mind it, we got a table, and we weren't stupidly crowded... what did you guys think?
The closeness of chinatown for foodage was definitely a plus.
1. extremely artistic and not at all drunk photo.
2. apparently some people are into guys with cameras, can't think why.
3. pinchy, cray and damon in flabbergasted awe of...
4. the glimmer twins! (and their manager Xenex).
