It has been a long time since I have watched a movie that has moved me at a personal level.
This may not be the big bang blockbuster that Hollywood hoped it would be, but it is, in its own way, one of the best films I have seen.
I watched Apocalypse Now : Redux today after watching Jarhead and realised that the military has alot to answer for but yet in all its stupidity, has a lot not to answer for.
The pain that this Marine goes through, and the complete parrallels that are brought into focus with Vietnam are amazing.
The visuals are not stunning in a sci-fi way and yet have the power to convey what it must be like to spend all your training days waiting for a perfect shot and not get to take it.
The burning wells, the anticipation, the total immersion is amazing.
My best recommendation for this film is to sit in a small dark room and remember that this isnt about special effects, this is about real life.
See it, hire it but most of all, think what it would be like to spend all your time training to be the best you can be, and then never being able to prove it, to yourself or anyone else.....
Semper Fi (what the hell does that mean anyway? -Bifrost)
