View Full Version : Where should I live in Brisbane

Hi all,
I have the opportunity to live in Brisbane and I was wondering where I should live if I choose to move there.
I am working in the CBD, so somewhere that is no more than 30 mins away from the CBD.
Just a list of suburbs that are nice, easy to get to and from the city, kid friendly (good schools) is all I am after.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

West End, Southbank, Highgate Hill, Woolongabba, Annerley, Dutton Park.
Basically Southside of river on the aouth/southeast side of the city

go south side. Here are some suburbs that may interest you:
Closer in:
Highgate hill, west end, dutton park, buranda, stones corner, fairfield, yeerongpilly, yeronga, to name a few.
Further out:
Macgregor, Mount Gravatt, Carina, Coorparoo, Holland Park, Camp Hill, Tarrigindi, Moorooka, to name just a few. I can put a better list together later, if you want, but they might be a place to start.

Brisbane, Bogan one day, a desolate wasteland the next.
How can you stand to live somewhere so cold in winter and hot in summer, and the DUST oh god, you guys are tougher than me.

Oh Shiny, I blame you anyhow. I will come to your house for drinkies sometime, just give me a date (preferably not before an assignment is due, or I am not in town). We will have to celebrate my finishing of university.

Well shoon, give me a call sometime and I will see you!! Bah, y'all are stinky. I am going to have to invite both you, and shiny over for dinner one day just to make you all quiet about not seeing me ;)
Oh, on that note, I should be moving sometime soon :( They should be resuming the house for the new tunnel in october, and since we have cats (and do intend to take em with us when we rent another place) we are going to start looking soon. So, who knows? Perhaps I won't be living this close to you in a months time! Still close enough to go out for drinkies and have a fun time though *grin*
I say we all go out after I get back from sydney (I am back on the 21st, but too late for drinkies on that day) for celebratory 'W00t I have finished university, but now I guess I actually have to get a real job' drinks. Or stay in and get drinks/food, I don't mind. Up until then I really have assignments etc due, though between the 2nd and the 5th and the 8th and 13th I would be up for some fun. So there, I have even given you dates! Call me or msn me (shiny, I don't think you have my msn addy, I can send it to you if you want) and we can sort something out.

Worst places to get into and out of. Shitty traffic jams and even shittier drivers. Used to live in Chapel Hill.
HATED IT. Would never go back there. EVER.
Its like living in a suburban rabbit warren where everyone drives pseudo 4wds to their kids school.

annerley, buranda, camp hill, cannon hill, carina, carina heights, coopers plains, coorparoo, dutton park, east brisbane, fairfield, fortitude valley, greenslopes, highgate hill, holland park, holland park west, kangaroo point, macgregor, moorooka, mount gravatt, mount gravatt east, new farm, newmarket, norman park, salsbury, southbank, south brisbane, stones corner, sunnybank, sunnybank hills, tarrigindi, upper mount gravatt, wishart, yeerongpilly, yeronga, morningside
A quick list of southside locations. There may be some in there that you don't want to go to, but it is just a quick list of the suburbs that my partner and I are looking at at the moment. Maybe give them a go :) That is the rental list that I would go for. Avoid Inala like the plague, and if possible, Acacia Ridge by association. If you want to look further out, let me know, and I can include a few more.

I should move to brisbane.
Do you guys have a store called "Woolworths" there? I work in one at the moment.
WOOLWORTHS!! I'll say it louder because you might have trouble understanding the name.
What about a fine resturant call Mcdonalds? We have them here in Sydney see, M-c-D-O-N-A-L-D-S!
Hey, anyone ever seen a delightful little comedy called Deliverance? ;)

Thanks for the ideas guys.
I have had a look at rent is very similar to ACT, if not a tad cheaper. To buy is definantly cheaper.
Basically it has to be close to the city and now I know to look Southside, so if I need any more information, I will let you guys know.

I've been thinking of moving to Esk.
Don't you like civilization or something?
Esk is where all the wild, bong smoking hippies live.
And it's really dry and really cold there at the moment too.
If you're going to live anywhere, at least pick somewhere that is familiar with the idea of public transport. At least you'll get better mobile reception.
And for jasebert - not sure I can provide much helpful information that hasen't already been given, except to say that I live in Geebung and I really like the area.
All around the area are interesting industrial places - very useful sometimes.
Also, we are near three shopping centres: Chermside, Toombul and Hypermarket.
Closer to us is a Jack Purcell's butcher which has some really good stuff, and a bit furthur away (halfway to Chermside) is another butcher that does the world's best hams. The name escapes me atm, sorry.
Oh, and for the boys, Geebung has a legal bonk shop just down the road. It also has a male on their books for the ladies (by appointment).
I think that's kind of cool.
Don't know if anyone cares, but I just thought I would share it in case it is helpful.

Capalaba is WAY too far out for what they want. If they want to get to the cbd in half an hour, there is no way in hell that is going to happen from capalaba easily.

k, i remember getting there in about 20 or so from the cbd, but yeah, that was nowhere near peak hour or anything.

I used to live across the road from Carindale Shopping Centre. It was actually Carina Heights, just off Creek Road. It was a two story townhouse with 3 bedrooms for about $210/wk. Quite new, swimming pools, lock-up garage. It was a great place.
Major shopping centre right there, buses to city every 5-10 minutes taking about 20 minutes (I love the BusWay) and driving is a piece of piss with the Riverside Expressway. The best part is, when the State of Origin is on you can get a bus directly to underneath the stadium :cheer:. Generally nice people in the area, bit more boganish if you keep going East towards Capalaba.

You see, people on the southside think that the western suburbs suck. People in the western suburbs think that the southside sucks.
Anyway, stay away from Darra, Inala, Goodna etc - anything ipswich way should be avoided.
I suggest Toowong, Indooroopilly, west end, new farm, newmarket, highgate hill, paddington and stuff.

Easy to drive around, shops open at night, belconnen markets, nerds everywhere. Oh I miss Canberra.

It was thought about but I really need the change. I can always come back in a couple of years time if worst comes to worst. But need to experience some different things. And I am only 25, and have been asked to move twice (once to Melbourne, which I turned down, and now). If work is going to pay for it and pay me more for moving, then it is an opportunity that I should take.
But I am still nervous and wondering if it is the best decision, but at least if I try it, I will look back and say I gave it my best shot, rather than say I wonder what it would have been like.

Red Hill, Paddington, Bardon, Rosalie, Toowong, Ashgrove are all great places to live and 10 minutes from the CBD... I live in Bardon, right near the Toowong Cemetary, and even at peak hours it takes me 10-15 mins to reach West End where I work.
Previously I live on Arthur Tce Red Hill and that is a very nice spot. Sure the mean income of the area is right up there but that just means you don't have to worry about parking your car on the street.
Definitely avoid anywhere further out west like Indooroopilly, Chapel Hill and Kenmore etc as the traffic is a nightmare.
Someone said Collingwood Park... that is right out in the 'burbs. You may as well get a place in Ipswich as live there.

Good luck! I've been looking for rental places for the past few weeks and it has sucked (but then, I want to take my kitties with me, and 99% of places don't allow pets)... and all my experiences in the past (bah, that was when there were more renters than properties though... people were signing up for places without even inspecting they were going so fast) tell me that most brisbane realestate agents doing rentals suck. But, I sincerely hope that you will be able to find something quickly and easily.

Okay I have a foolproof method (so far anyway) to get you into any place, with cats, whether pets are allowed or not... This method has worked for us over our last three moves... all to places that said No Pets... We have three cats.
NOTE: Likely not to work with dogs as real estate agents have a bit more of a negative view to them as they can stink... :)
The steps:
Apply and move in... No pets don't worry.
After a couple of months contact your real estate with this story: "My {insert relative name here} is going overseas for xxx months and he/she has asked me to look after his/her cats. Would it be okay if they stayed here while he/she is away?" You can whack on all the sob story you like about how he/she couldn't find anyone else to mind them etc etc.
Okay... Now hopefully you got that approval. We have yet to be knocked back on our last 3 tries.
Wait however long you said your relative would be away and then contact real estate and tell them that unfortunately your relative is no longer returning from overseas.
Usually... their response is to not worry about the cats as ...what the hell... you have already had them in there for the past xxx months.
Enjoy your now "Pets Allowed" home.
The only negative is that my sister wishes she could travel as much as my real estate agents seem to think she has. ;)
Give it a try :D

Hahaha. How do you think we got allowed to keep these little cuties? A fairly similar method, however it was that "Grandma Died".... and we could actually, sadly, produce a death certificate if asked (though we didnt have to. We had been living here for four and a half years or so though, so they know that we can look after the place. We did actually seek permission for our current cats before we got them, though we had hidden one here in the past.
The problem is, however, that we were looking at units and townhouses, and I cant see a lot of owners going through the effort of dealing with body corp to allow us to have pets, as a lot of complexes (with regards to rentals, at least.. it seems to be slightly different if you actually own and occupy) just say no to pets. Sadly, we are just at the point of no longer wanting to hide our furry friends as we have had to do in the past.
Sorry for not being able to use an apostrophie in a few places in that post... keyboard seems to be disliking me, as it is opening up the find function when I click on that, or forward slash... weird.
