Just a quick little review since this is the month that the new Long term version of Ububtu came out. Dapper Drake just rocks. It's a big cleanup since the Badger.

Doing a little testing. I clocked my startup of badger versus drake on my 2.2ghz laptop. Standard install, no hacked up configs. Grub to GDM:
Badger: 5 min.
Drake 40 sec.

Respone time has also been improved across the board. I didn't clock it, but it's just as significant from noticing 5 min from 40 sec. Networking still hangs a little, but not as bad as it used to. Wireless is more managable.
better hardware database. I didn't have to fuck with my D-link card and all the ndiswrapper shit. it's picked up as an atheros card. that made me hella happy.

Better power managment too. for some reason now, my laptop doesn't drain like it did in badger.

new gnome is a little cleaner, nicer... some extras thrown in.

anyway, I say go for it and switch to 6.0 from 5.10. fresh reinstall. back that /home and just go to town!... you'll be glad. extra lifespan from it and all.

anyone else have some good comments about it?

i hear there are some serious bugs with ati video cards that still need ironing out, from slashdot:

On May 29th, two days before release, an ATI bug was introduced via the xorg driver that makes Dapper unstable on certain ATI based systems. In my own case this means that my G4 is now unusable. Just as a reminder, if you think you might be affected, don't upgrade.

but it'll work fine on my pc boxes one day...

With contrast to that, my ATI card for the lappy is running smoother than when it was with 5.10. So yeah, there are going to be bugs, but I bet it's going to get squashed fairly quickly. their 3 year plan of 6.0 won't be wasted.

yeah, unless i put it on one of my macs, i won't be running into this xorg bug, i prefer nvidia for x.

yeah. I know my coworker tried to put the beta drake on with his amd64 machine that did have an ati 9600 on it. and it did have some problems.

Let's say this.... Drake is all but 5 days old, I'm sure this will be fixed really soon. Either way, it's one hell of an upgrade from the previous version. Once that get's fixed up..... you should move over to it.

There an ATI in my Powerbook G4 but the live CD seemed to be fine. Also seemed to pick up my Airport Extreme to some degree and whinge about missing firmware.. I have an inkling it'll work once I get it installed and grab an appropriate firmware package out of multiverse.

If I can find a few spare hours today I'll be upgrading.

Edit: ah, it's a random sporadic lockup in x.org. That scares me enough that I'll hold off for a bit.
