Hi all,

Need some advice. Basically last week I was told that the office I am in will be closing down due to lack of sales (through no fault of my own, I sold more than our sales person).

I have been offered a job in Brisbane for more money and more responsibility. I really want to move. Basically I have moved interstate and overseas a few times (around 6) and I really just need a change. Canberra is nice, but I feel I need a change of scenery and life style.

Work has offered to move all my stuff, fly us up and what not all paid for also with 1 free month accomodation.

Would you move if given the chance, and if so, why or why not.

Would moving to ACT to QLD give me more opportunity to grow professionally?

Any advice on what it is like to move a family would be greatly appreciated.

I'd move to Sydney if I were you, the market in QLD is even flatter than ACT at the moment.

Sounds like a sweet deal they're offering. What line of work are you in?

I'd move from ACT to QLD even if the dole was the best offer.

Benwah: What are you basing this statement on?

I'm living in Brisbane and there is absolutely no shortage of IT positions up here. Previously Sydney was the way to go because the jobs paid better salaries and there was more work. The salaries in Brisbane, however, are catching up and the cost of living here is dirt cheap compared to Sydney.

Adding the weather into the equation Brisvegas is a great place to live.

Sales figures of Networking kit across various states, and personal experience.

I don't really like Brissy, but like most things it's personal, heaps of people in Brisbane probably feel the same about Sydney.

You are right about that... I don't like Sydney except for short visits. I grew up in Melbourne and came up here 20 years ago and can't go back because of the weather :) The Brisbane you once experienced is a different animal these days (the old turn back your watch an hour + 20 years is probably more 10 years now :D )

From someone who is on the ground here the past 12 months have seen a huge revival in the contract market, which was well dead before that. Full time positions are everywhere and well paid. I'm self employed and have had three job offers in as many months.

Thanks for that. In ACT there are heaps of IT jobs, but I really do not want to go government again. I hated it and because of that I got into some bad behaviour in relation to alcohol and got all thingy, but that is for another day.

ACT is not flat at the moment at all. There is allot of government activity anyway but unfortunantly we could not focus on federal govt for the time being.

It is in the area I work in, apart from yeah, Federal Gov there isn't much else going on, some Education stuff and the odd bit of security work but otherwise Dead as a Dodo, same with Brissy.

But I probably do something completely different to what you do, so not that qualified to comment really.... so... back in my box!

Working for a Brisbane-based IT consulting company, the market in Brisbane is in pretty damn good shape.

I relocated my family here about 6 years ago, We were a young family, Daycare was impossible to find and we could not survive on one salary. So I quit my job and moved us up here. lied to the real estate about contracts all lined up. it was pretty tough till I got regular work (you don't sound like you have that problem though),.

But now I love it, wouldn't go back. I earn better money now and have not looked back. The kids are at school and it is really good fun teasing the QLD'ers at state of origin time.

If it feels right, do it.
