yo fellas,
I'll be traveling back to China this summer and I'm looking into unlocking my mobile. It's not too terribly important, primarily because I'm pretty sure my phone (850/1800/1900) doesn't support the band frequency (900 specifically) I'll need anyway, but it's a hobby-ish interest I have to unlock my phone anyway. I got a Samsung SGH-x497. If nobody knows anything specific, a decent place for me to start looking would be appreciated. I glanced around google and i've found people who charge $5 for certain nokia codes,...but even then no Samsung...I'm gunning for the free info anyway.

Any info given will be heavily appreciated gents ;-).
peace.

Couple of threads. Doubt if they'll be very helpful.

I don't know what this means:

SIM Lock
When the SIM Lock feature is enabled, your phone only
works with the current SIM. You must enter the SIM lock
code to unlock the SIM so you can use a different SIM card.
Once you have entered the lock code, you are asked to
confirm your entry.

When the SIM Lock feature is enabled, your phone only works with the current SIM. You must enter the SIM lock code to unlock the SIM so you can use a different SIM card. Once you have entered the lock code, you are asked to confirm your entry.

Note: The SIM lock code is available through your Service Provider, only.

Ever thought of actually paying your service provider to unlock it?

If I did that then it wouldn't be a hobby task. Furthermore, why the hell would they want to do that? They'd be helping me avoid the rather large amount of anal raping they'd be giving me due to international roaming charges. Heh, that is...if my phone supported the frequency I needed in China...which it doesn't... so it doesn't matter.

But yeah,...it's a feeble attempt on my part to actually OWN my own electronic gadgets and not have them be controlled by somebody else...

My next task will be trying to disable the GPS embedded in the phone whenever I wish... heh...that one might prove a bit more difficult.

Look for an unlock code calculator. NokiaFREE is great for Nokias, don't know about your phone though. There are some special forums dedicated to unlocking phones but can't recall any of them.
