There have been few re-releases of albums in Australian rock history, and even fewer successful ones. Unit - Rebooted (1998) is one of them, including the videos to all five singles. Some albums update our notion of what pop/rock is and Unit is that update in Australian, perhaps universal, terms. One of the band's strengths is that it never leans too heavily on its influences, although they can be clearly seen, and their faultless rhythm ensures you're too busy enjoying yourself to examine them too closely.

Like its predecessor Tu Plang Kon Uauk (http://forums.zgeek.com/showthread.php?t=47436) Unit begins with a reprise of a previous song i like your old stuff better than your new stuff, a glossy sparkly preview of the unit (they went on to do yet a third version of the song later), but that's mere foreplay as everyday formula roars in on a west coast wave of nihilistic thrash

everyday i talk to my machines
more sense than talking to human beings
its pretty in the land of the free
where things aint quite what they seem

At complete right angles is ! (song formerly known as), which somehow manages to take the piss out of funk, rnb, marvin gaye and george clinton in the first 20 seconds, let alone Prince. Regurgitator slip in a celebration of being a daggy suburbanite in the middle of that intoxicating groove, and celebrate computer game junkies in the perfect power pop of black bugs. Bluntly disposing of the porn culture in the world of sleaze, an appropriately slinky tune, the boys move on to a wonderfully insane thrash complete with horror strings called i piss alone, on the dreaded kidney shyness. i wish i could scream like that :D The title song unit is the essence of regurgitator slyness, a freeform rap on being reduced to a unit. i will lick your arsehole is one of those raps you learn, if you can stop grooving long enough to listen:

asiatic australiasiatic instamatic rhythmbox static addict
i got the juice and all else got the pith
and im tough under pressure just like Sarah Jane Smith

modern life is much more a standard rocker bemoaning commercial culture, but polyestergirl is another pop gem; classic subversion of lyric versus music about inflatable dolls. They actually performed this live at the ARIA awards. 1234 demonstrates what a practice room is like, and brings some much needed distortion back into the mix. mr t is more west coast, an almost Peppery love song. The closer just another beautiful story is still astonishing,

all that i am and all i'll ever be, is a brain in a body
and all that i know and all i'll ever see, is the real things around me
all i've heard and it's true, there ain't no god there's just me and you
i don't see a point in this place but i'm happy to be floating in space

not merely for the Beatles parody (who saw that coming?), but its lyric is a lot braver and more challenging than your average grungy band. But the gurge is no average band, and this is no average album.
