So I picked up a MacBook (base model) and love it.
It's amazingly fast (boots in 15 seconds), has a full-size keyboard, 4-hour battery life, quality integrated webcam/ mic and the best power socket in the world (magnetic)!
Thought I'd use Parallels alot, but have found CrossOver to be far more usefull.
My only complaint is how hot it gets (I'm not retarded enough to burn my legs though).
Anyone else taken the plunge?

Congrats! I've had a MacBook Pro for a couple months, it's a beauty. The metal shell spreads the heat well so I've no complaints at all. Enjoy!

Welcome to the fold. I'm still saving up for my MacBook. Sorry to hear that heat problems are still the go with mac laptops. Maybe you should check the apple forums to see if people have found any workarounds?

The heat doesn't really bother me. I've got a 2yr warranty, so if it catches fire I'll get a new one!
Never heard about this 'free XP', care to elaborate?
Any essential apps?

Any essential apps?
Certainly. If you're used to more than MSN and AIM for instant messaging, I recommend AdiumX (http://www.adiumx.com).
For advanced text editing (like HTML, CSS, and assorted programming), TextWrangler (http://www.barebones.com/products/textwrangler/).
Corripio (http://nclasssoftware.com/index.php/nClassSoftware/corripio/)'s good for getting Album Art for iTunes (it uses the iTunes music store, rather than Amazon or Google; for those, I use Clutter (http://www.sprote.com/clutter/))
VirtueDesktops (http://virtuedesktops.info/) if you want virtual desktops.
Handbrake (http://handbrake.m0k.org/) for DVD ripping/encoding.
I haven't bought one yet but it's on the list. The long, long list :D

For the computer lab at the school I work at (which I run), we just got an offer for a MAJOR donation, including completely redoing the lab. But we have to accept Apple computers. This includes the possibility of at least 2 apple cinematic displays. I turned them down though. If it can't be done on a pc, it shouldn't be done anyway.

Ok, so I'm lying. I didn't turn them down. I still have to see if the donation goes all the way through. I may be working with Final Cut Pro VERY soon. droooooool......
And I'm not even big into macs, honestly.
