Ok so i bought a new laptop LG (S1-J3A2A) and loaded a duel boot xp/BSD great. (dont go on about linux i have that on the desk top duel boot xp/FC5) Im studying networking at Swinny so i want to know about the free Nix's out there and what they can do ect.

So back to BSD prob I cant find drivers for the network card not the wifi there are drivers comming out for that soon and there are already some but thats not what i want ATM.

Im useing freebsd 6.0 i might download 6.1 soon but not realy sure if this will fix the prob.

The card just doesnt show up at all.

I can network through firewire but again not what i want.

any help much apreciated

6.1 is substantially more up to date than 6.0 - that should be your first port of call.

Other than that you're gunna need to find out the exact network chipset (Windows Device Manger in XP should help) and trawl the net for answers.

You'll also find that most of the Linuxes are more Laptop aware than the BSD's

A quick Google would indicate that the laptop works under Linux, since people are preinstalling it (http://www.vgcomputing.com.au/nslgS1-J3A2A.html). I'd recommend downloading a modern LiveCD (Ubuntu for example) and booting it, dropping down into a terminal and finding out whatever you can about the LAN from that - lsmod, lspci, ifconfig, man page for the driver etc. That should get you on the road to figuring out how to get it running under BSD, since "I need to get the ethernet working on my LG S1-J3A2A" is a pretty obscure question, while "I need to get my Intel 922312-doohickey chipset's ethernet working" is likely to lead you to an answer.

EDIT: or, if you've still got a Windows partition, you could probably get the same information from that, as mentioned by the other dude with the same avatar.

what locust said. at least then you might find something through the ports system that solves your driver problem, although i am slightly suprised freebsd is behind on this one (i havent run it since 4.9-stable so am way off pace).

*edit*
ok its a fucking desset out ther for this card "Agere Systems ET-131X PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller" all i can find is some windows drivers and a cupple of french linux users asking for help like WTF mate.

Couldnt even find a refrence to it and my laptop now getting a bit frustrated.

there not they just didnt want the intel drivers because they were in binary (bit of a noob to the nixes so not realy sure of the prob there but something about security it think)

I'd guess you're SOL with FreeBSD at this point, the Linux support seems pretty cutting edge.

If you really to play with FreeBSD you could always run it inside VMWare Server. (which is free)

Yeah I would run it under VMWare Server, genercises drivers etc.

Otherwise you could try a compatible USB network card ?

thx people's might have to wait for drivers or just get the wifi ones. will look at VMWare Server but sounds like a bit of a fuckabout. might jsut put linux on here and bsd on one of my other comps.
