Howdy, i have a 1 gig Nano, theres something that is starting to shit me a little bit with it.
Every now and then when listening to music, when you use the middle button to scroll through volume, track skip and favoutrie rating theselection can be changed however it will only display the 5 star rating option. I can only reset this by doing a hard reset on the ipod.
i know its not a big problem but its startig to shit me, anyone else have this problem?

ummm firstly you need to place the ipod in the bin. Then go down to the shops and use your credit card to buy a non-mac mp3 player with a screen.
nah srry dont know anything about nano's, only bigger ones.

Yeah, im sorta regretting buying it now, 1 gig seemed to be big enough. Just aint cutting the mustard at the moment.
Im waiting for a 20 gig mp3 phone with a decent camera all combined into one.
I think i will be waiting for a while.

1 gig enough for music? LoL.
Nah im pretty sure that there is technical problems with your ipod because that has never happened ever on mine. Luckily if you have purchased within a year you will be able to get a full refund otherwise you might want to try a factory restore, that might work
Unlike 85% of the geeks on this site, i love my ipod and i rate it highly

i dig my iPod as well, but that is because i use it for a very specific purpose that it fits perfectly.
i have also got a 1 gig ipod shuffle that i use when running that is perfect for that use. i have about half filled it with songs i like to hear when running and just let it go. the nano makes sense for someone who has a similar use in mind but wants a tad more control over the music (search for particular songs and playlisting).
i think one reason the iPod shits a lot of folks is the whole "cultural revolution" aspect apple seems determined to jam down everyone's throat to further their marketing strategy. the iPod ain't the best thing since sliced bread, mr. jobs.
and no, i don't think iPods are by any means a perfect device and, as my needs change, my use for them will probably change as well. but, on the other hand, they have a lot more worth than simply throwing them away as many inevitably suggest when the subject is brought up.

Well I first started with a Creative nomad1 1.5gb. I had that for a bit over a year as it had a 18 month warranty. Then swapped it for an ipod mini 1st gen the day they came out, I payed about $20 more instead of getting my so called nomad fixed. Now im using a 5gb Iriver H10 that i got for free. My dad got a 20gb h10 and 2x 5gb h10's for free through work. My ipod mini is now a very good paper weight. The battery doesnt even hold charge if its left untouched for over 2 days.
I used to love my mini, but the iriver sound quality with the SRS WOW makes it sooooo much better than anything else in my opinion. Hence why i hate ipods now, no problems from the H10, heaps of problems with the Ipod.

I have an Ipod 30gb and I haven't got the problem you describe Salted_Chipmunk, however as it IS mac and therefore there are always more than just a few glitches.
I have a few issues, first of all, THEY LIED TO ME. They said my ipod had a 14 hour battery life when just playing music, now I have tested this, I loaded my songs on, charged my Ipod and then played the first song and let it run through. I didn't touch the pad or anything, just locked it and listened. I got maybe 2 or 3 hours out of it before it shat itself. I'm sure a few of you know what I'm talking about...
Problem 2, I don't know if you guys get this but on occasion I'll press the center button or go to unlock my ipod and it just freezes. I have to wait 10 minutes and try to reset the damn thing. I have no idea why, I take good care of my ipod, it DID cost me a small fortune so I don't go dropping it or throwing it at brick walls (although I'm tempted).
Sorry for going completely off topic there. I figured since we were all talking about ipod problems I could contribute my experiences and maybe start an official mac hate group. Anyway, if anyone knows why my ipod is freezing, tell me so I can either fix it or email apple and tell them where to stick it.

oh yea, my ipod mini problem was really odd and annoying. For about a month my ipod's menu button and lock switch swapped their functions. So whenever i wanted to go back in the menu i had to put the lock on then off. Whenever i wanted to lock the keypad i had to hold the menu button down.

Do you decharge then fully charge (10 hours or more) frequently? Higher-bitrate, VBR & DRM'd music files will chew up the battery quicker.

Yeah I've had my Ipod for a while now and I regularly decharge and then recharge my ipod, most of my music files are .mp3 format, low end of the scale as far as bitrate is concerned. I tested my ipod again and It seems to be gettin a little more life out of the battery..
I haven't changed the songs that are on there or anything.. maybe I just need to decharge and recharge the battery a bit more..
Apple defies logic..

I really like the iriver h10, but the podcast (stupid word, but what are you going to do) handling in iTunes + iPod is leagues ahead. The interface on the h10 is a bit slow and annoyingly laid out too. I prefer my nano, and before I get accused of bias, I own one of each.
Now if only the Nano came with the fm receiver like the h10 does.
