so im relatively new to this peice of apple software.
i know layers, i know actions, and i have a pretty good general idea around the tool tray.

my first question is: ive seen small photos blown up to large posters relatively nicely, and it takes forever. how do i upscale an image to the best possible image quality? (im thinking its a combination of resize and sharpen/something commands)

I think you'll find it's Adobe Photoshop, not Apple iShop. There are different scaling methods that work with different types of content. Play around with bicubic, bilinear etc. For really massive enlargements I use a plugin called Genuine Fractals.

many times, for real big enlargements, theres no beating teh old fashioned method of optical enlargement.

Using a combination of Bicubic Smoother interpolation, and individual sharpening of Red, Green and Blue channels (see here (http://www.ephotozine.com/techniques/viewtechnique.cfm?recid=367)) will give you the best digital results.
