Apple just sent me a letter regarding my powerbook battery.

I knew about the exploding batteries, but last time I checked, mine wasn't in the list of recalled serial numbers.

It is now.

Please contact your local Apple Authorized Service Provider to obtain a replacement battery. For your convenience, the below is a list of Apple Service Providers in your country.

View the list of Service Providers

You may print this page as a reference to bring with you to the Apple Service Provider. Please note, it could take up to 6 weeks for your replacement battery to arrive after your Apple Service Provider orders it. Shipping time may vary due to availability.

Please discharge your battery prior to returning it:

- Insert the recalled battery in your iBook/PowerBook, disconnect the power adapter, and turn on your computer.

- Go to the Apple Menu, open System Preferences, and select Energy Saver. You’ll see an Optimize Energy Settings pop-up menu; select Highest Performance.

- Let your computer run on battery power until the computer goes to sleep. This will take about four hours or less depending on the charge level of your battery.

Tips for faster discharge: Play a DVD movie, a CD in iTunes (turn on the Visualizer), or the Chess game (set to play computer vs. computer).

Important: Be sure to disconnect the power adapter before discharging your recalled battery. Do not leave your PowerBook unattended while it is discharging.

I don't know whether this means I have to hand over my battery, then wait 6 weeks for a replacement, or order a replacement and hand it over once it arrives.. each page says a different thing!

I know Apple is spending Millions of $$ on this replacement program, but up to 6 weeks turnaround??

I'm gonna be pissed if its the first scenario, but I guess its better than an exploding laptop!!

I believe you hand over your battery and then get the replacement
which means using it with the power attached.

thats what they did previously, however it may have changed... I'd call up and ask.

The turnaround is also because your battery would likely be shipping from asia.

It is a terrorist sham to deny us the use of our laptops.

Hey Cheezdog,

Which powerbook do you have? Is it just a flat re-call on all batteries or is it just those from a certain model? Did they have any more information (refered to any other websites)?

From memory, it was the last series of PowerPC Macbooks before the Intel ones came out, and not the 17" screen ones. Check for sure.

if you're in brisbane, go to www.infinitesystems.com.au

you can put your details in there and submit, they'll organise it with apple, and they'll send the replacement to the store (its on Charlotte St), then you take your battery in and swap it

Got my shiney new battery today from the Mac place at Nth Sydney.

The best thing was my old battery was pretty much dead, 30min or so of charge. Now I get a new one courtesy of Steve.

they expanded the serial number ranges about a month ago for the powerbooks.
