My current employer is expanding and needs some extra people. We're looking for programmers and infrastructure people mainly (though not exclusively). We have offices in Shanghai and Tokyo. Both offices are English speaking environments - Japanese is not required. All nationalities are welcome to apply, and we can sponsor a visa.

There are lots of projects at the moment, so there's a variety of positions available. I'm currently working on two. The first is using wireless networks to track peoples movement through supermarkets, the other is a mobile phone based survey for a major sports clothing brand. So as you can imagine, we're after a pretty wide skill set.

Coming absolutely clean, I get a bonus for anyone I can find. Please send me a message if you have any questions about the position.

The money would (obviously) vary depending on the position, but a developer gets 6million yen a year which is about $70,000AUD.

Developers should have experience along the lines of C++, Java, C#, Perl, Python, SQL, XML. You don't need to know all of those, but it's a good guide.

For infrastructure, we're especially after people with SAN knowledge (EMC preferable) or virtualisation (VMware in particular).

We're not exclusively looking for those positions, so if you have other strong skills let me know. Those are just the priorities.

The office is near Tokyo Tower for anyone who wants to know.

Was thinking much the same. 70K isn't much in Australian terms let alone paying Japanese cost of living expenses.

70K over here is taxed at what, about 42 cents in the dollar?
My brother is over in Nishigawa near Osaka wirking in IT at the moment. He currently pays around 9 cents in the dollar on his income. So, while his gross income is similar to what he was getting for a similar job in Perth, his net is so much much more.

Apparently the tax rate in Japan is worked on a user pays basis.
Since he is ther on a visa, he is not elligible for government health care, so he doesn't pay tax for that, isn't going to retire there, so doesn't pay tax for that, Doesn't have kids, so doesn't pay tax for education. I think he just pays for local goverment type stuff.

Sounds like something that might appeal to you DT.

Certainly sounds better than the system over here anyway.

At any rate, I handed in my resignation yesterday to go and build a startup consultancy with a few people I know.

I don't think 70k is enough to live in Tokyo comfortably. Shanghai is way cheaper, but I still wouldn't live there for that, even with tax concessions.

An English teacher in Japan typically gets less than half of that - and there's plenty of them in Tokyo.

There's also Japanese bonuses...

Yeah, I know Munger. I'm not trying to be derogatory, its just my opinion. For some people the life experience of moving to Japan is more important than the money. My point is that money is pretty cool, and having lots of it in Tokyo is helpful.

I think having more money anywhere is pretty useful :-)

Have a look at these for comparison:

That's a pretty popular English-speakers-in-Japan website, so it should give you a fair idea of what's going.

If it was in Saporro i'd consider it b/c i could live with my brother but Tokyo's not the right environment for me. :)

If they start hiring in that area let me know. :)
