The best thing about metal gigs is checking out the crowd while waiting to get into the venue. Tonight's crowd at the Enmore was eclectic, to say the least. You had some goth/emo kiddies with lots of eyeliner and strange piercings, a lot of kids with their parents, old-skool metalheads stuck in 1988 and a lot nu-metal types. The band T-shirts worn by the crowd ranged from the obligatory Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbournes shirts to Pantera, Tool and a Rush shirt. Yes, Rush. And then there was the guy wearing his grey cardigan**.

The intro music for BLS was a strange old tune. It kind of threw me as the leadup to the main show had been the new Motorhead album and then G'n'R's "Appetite for Destruction". If anyone can shed light on the song that was played, I would be grateful.

Then Zakk and BLS came on and the fun began. If I had to describe the gig in one word, it would be "LOUD!". If I had two words, "PRIMORDIALLY LOUD!" BLS were very loud and Zakk was on fire. The first three songs were played with no break between songs and the crowd was loving it. Some posturing and heart-thumping from Zakk caused mass hysteria around the Enmore and why not? They don't make entertainers like him anymore.

A piano was brought out midway through the set and Zakk played some of his slower stuff and in a touching heartfelt moment, he dedicated "The Last Goodbye" to Steve Irwin and Peter Brock and then dedicated the next song, "In This River" to Dimebag. A nice gesture.

The guitar solo was awesome with Zakk just going mental on the fretboard and keeping the crowd in awe with his speed and technical ability. Towards the end, he reeled off Van Halen's "Eruption" pretty much as good as Eddie van Halen could ever do.

The night included a lot of heart-thumping, signs of the cross and lifting of guitars to the gods. What more could you want from a metal gig?

** That was me. I did go all rock'n'roll at one point and took it off during the show. Sex, drugs and natural fabrics, man!

Disclaimer: while Zakk mentioned God a few times, it wasn't like a born-again meeting or something. Don't get the wrong idea about my review.
