View Full Version : Project Management Training
Hey guys
Just wondering if anyone has done any PM training and can recommend courses but more importantly good places that do them. Mainly looking to get PMI certification so any courses that train you up for that?
Cheers

depends upon your market - down in sunny Canberra the govt just loves certification for PMs - Prince2 works really well - ergo i suggest you go that way. Also if you need to do anal shitty details then itil is the way to go.

Really depends on where you want to get to. Something like PRINCE2 is a soul destroying methodology and would literally drive any sane person around the twist if they had to work with it day in and day out.
But for providers, I like the Australian Institute of Management http://www.aim.com.au/
I did their IT project management certification years ago and still find myself going back to the course notes occasionally for inspiration.

Gov loves Prince2, Finance likes PMI and IT likes both but often with a specific bent towards RUP.
There is still often a pref of proven performance over certification but certs will prob get you the experience (if you do not have it already). If you do it will get you a pay rise :)
Good PMI cert course at Macquarie. Short and but expensive one at AIM. Both Syd based but can also be done distance.
Final advice; don't do it! It will make your hair fall out and your cool drop off. That has been my experience anyway.

rep for all but dwarf must wait till i spread more around
I should've said I'm currently a PM at a web dev shop and looking for certification just so I have that bit of paper people seem to care so much about as well as learn as much as I can. PRINCE2 is a bit over the top for me at the moment and not sure i really want to go that way.
Cheers guys

Dude just saw something to indicate you are at Hothouse. Man, sux to be you. The way the market is ATM I would not be too worried about certs.
I have 4 PM / producer roles in my inbox ATM and about 3 recruiters hounding me for my contacts.
The expression make hay while the sun shines is appropriate. Go study in winter when things cool off a bit. PM if you want me to forward some of these emails.

I did PMBOK Tier 1 and found it to be almost prehistoric it was so old and crap. Of course, this suited a lot of people because it meant they could hide in the midst of methodology for years on end without doing pretty much anything.
It's bloated and inflexible and will drive the cost of your projects up by about double. It is totally not suited to IT projects at all and suffers from the flawed analogy that "Building a system is like building a house". I found it creates a sense of "risk paralysis" where people become so obsessed with risk that it overcomplicates the task at hand.
Anyway, use PMBOK if you like making cheap projects expensive and writing mountains of documents instead of actually doing stuff.
