I'm not much of a reader. Sure, if I had the time or attention span I would be able to sit down and enjoy a book every now and then but I always seem to be in too much of a hurry to just do one thing at a time. But one day I discovered this piece of writing during my mindless internet wanderings and was hooked. It had everything I could ask for in a story, it had great writing, some action, believable characters and linked in with one of the best game series I have ever played in my life. I had found 'I Know What's Beneath The Snowfields".
The story centers around a lesser but intriguing character in ff7 called Vincent. In fact he is so lesser you can even go through the entire game without ever actually meeting him or hearing reference to him whatsoever. That said, missing out on him in the game will result in you losing a large part of the backstory. But enough about the game, if you've played it it's very likely you know him already.
The story is centered around the return of Aeris, killed in the game by Sephiroth but for some reason has returned to the world of the living, but with no memory of who she is or her former life. Instead she only has memories of a doctor terrorizing and torturing her until she escaped from there, and ran into Vincent. The story then progresses from there, with many twists and turns that I shall not reveal here.
I heartily recommend this story to anyone who knows the basic backstory to Final Fantasy 7, honest to god I would rate this among some of the best stories I have ever read. I know fan fictions are often shithouse affairs that if good rapidly turn into substandard erotica pieces about people doing animals or something. BUT THIS ISN'T ONE OF THOSE! It's a masterpiece, articulate and intelligent which quite accurately pieces together the backstory of the creation of sephiroth and is a believable continuation of the original story. Hey, even if you havn't played the game feel free to give it a try! I doubt you will be disappointed.
