I just purchased a macbook for my wife - could anyone help me out by suggesting whether I should be putting some sort of anti virus software on this? If so, what would you recommend?

Thanks in advance.

Its a mac, you dont need antiivirus unless you are planning on running windows on there as well, in that case pick your favourite windows antivirus.

Is that because the OS is based on unix?

having virus protection is a must what ever OS you use, you could pass one on via email to your ususpecting mates.

the best that money can buy IMO is the intego suite. Norton sucks the massive donkey cock and is hard to use.

At least use the Intego demo to give it whirl, I have the suite with the anti spam protection and its awesome.

thanks for the tips. I'll check them out - I've only ever worked on Windows and AIX machines so this mac thing is quite new, but it is easy to see how much Windows is based on stuff on the mac.

Cheers.

Doesn't Norton eventually destroy your computer? :P
Sorry to bring it off topic.

Overall though you should get an anti-virus client, mac or not. they aren't that stable and there is 3-4 virus's out there for them! :)

Yes. If you have it installed for too long, Peter Norton (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Norton) comes round with a sledgehammer and destroys your computer. All part of the service.

That explains why so many of the machines I support are fucked in the ass!

I've never bothered with AV software
if you're an idiot and expose yourself to viruses and open emails that are obviously viruses... then you might need it.. just to be on the safe side.

I've done online scans and other types of scans, i just never installed any av software onto my machine.

But we're talking about a mac here. seriously, chance of getting a virus currently is almost zero.
In the future, that chance might change, but currently, its a waste of time.

you are not just going up against virus'; there is malware, security issues, bugs or even word documents that could be made vulnerable by ususpecting windows users being complete fuckwits.

Give me examples
Ignoring word documents, because macro viruses aren't harmful.
