Those angst-ridden, ass-kicking avengers with attitude are back in action, dudes. More than a decade after their last big-screen outing, the Turtles return to do what they do best – fight evil, chomp pizza and raise shell. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles began life as a joke, yet went on to become one of the biggest pop culture franchises of the 80s and 90s. What started as a one-off superhero parody spawned a series of comic books, three live action films and several Saturday morning cartoons – along with bucketloads of toys, clothes, videogames, duvet-covers and other miscellaneous merchandise.

This kickstart to the franchise – in brilliant CGI – is set some time after the three live-action films. Their mortal enemy, Foot Clan leader Shredder, is dead and sibling rivalry has seen the team split up and go their separate ways. Leonardo is in South America, where Splinter has sent him to train and become a better leader; Donatello works on a computer support phoneline; Michalangelo entertains at kids’ parties wearing a fake “turtle” suit; and Raphael has become a crime-fighting vigilante, The NIghtwatcher. But the guys are forced to team up again when industrialist Max Winters (voiced by Patrick Stewart) threatens the city by raising up an army of ancient monsters. With their old allies April O’Neill (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Casey Jones (Chris Evans) by their sides, the Turtles not only have to deal with these nasty new monsters, but also with their old foes, the Foot clan, now led by Karai (Ziyi Zhang).

To be honest, I haven’t seen a reinvention like this since Batman Begins. Gone is the dumbing down of the Saturday morning cartoons. Back comes some of the darkness, angst and humour of Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird’s original creation. There’s genuine warmth, depth to all the characters (although Donatello and Michaelangelo don’t get an awful lot to do), good-natured humour and enough action to teach Bryan Singer a thing or two about making an action film. And the CGI? Well, this mob could give the lovely folk over a Pixar a run for their money. There’s a scene halfway through the movie where it starts raining; the water, when it hits the characters, acts just as you’d expect water to act in the real world. Until now, I had never seen CGI that good.

TMNT brings us back the Turtles as they were meant to be. And it’s great to have those little green dudes back.

interestingly enough, the comic was actually a parody of just about every aspect of a very popular run during the mid-1980 in the marvel comic book Daredevil. the artist/writer responsible for the resurgence of the Daredevil run? none other than Frank Miller.

Yeah, I think I read that in the film's production notes...

I took in a Saturday afteroon matinee in which there was a curious mixture of kids, parents, geeks and geek parents. There were kids singing the original tv show theme song, kids singing the new tv show theme song... geeks singing the theme songs... It was great. It was kid-friendly but still somehow true to everything I hold dear about the ninja turtles. The fight scenes were really well orchestrated, the cg was fabulous, the soundtrack was excellent and even the plot was well presented. They gave you just enough info to set the stage and not enough to make people with scientific educations sit there being grumpy - suspension of disbelief was total.

Anyone who ever loved TMNT should love this movie.

We saw this with the kidlets last night and thoroughly enjoyed it for all of the reasons already mentioned.

SOC, I couldn't agree more about the CG. I was going to wax lyrical about the rain until I saw you had mentioned it in the review.
It was impossible to not be impressed.

You forgot to mention that they totally boned Don and Mike in it. I can't remember Mike even pulling out his nunchucks and April + Casey get more screentime than Don + Mike do.

I agree that they needed more Don, but Mike had his moments.

It had three really great things. Great fight scenes, great CG (though the stylisation did take some getting used to) and a great plot that didn't drag.

I beleive the choice of badguys for the turtles to fight could of been better. I really didnt buy into the whole monsters bit.

Otherwise an awesome film.

I haven't watched the Turtles for many years, but having a child has brought them back into my life. This movie seems to hold closer to it's original roots than previous ones, and whilst some think that the monsters are a bit far fetched, yet they're still able to accept the idea of walking talking turtles, is a bit lol.

The storyline kept me in my seat throughout the movie - which is rare for me, I usually fidget like an ADHD kid who's just had red cordial.

The graphics were spectacular, and the rain, holy crap :faint: Most movies I've watched recently have been well made, but this is the first one that's really impressed me enough to actually comment on it.

SOC's post sums up everything in the movie that made it absolutely awesome for me. 10 points for the review and an overall 10 for the movie.
