It's out!?! Fuck, I work in a comic book store and I didn't even
know that!

P.S - I'll be working at a Comic Convention next weekend, and
my stall is going to be next to where John Cassaday will be
signing...... all weekend!

Hehe, I am so going to prod him with a stick.

Oh then you can tell me if they are going to make a sequel to Watchmen. I've heard mixed rumours about it. Thatwas a fucking awesome graffic novel.

BLASPHEMY!!!

nothing is superior to watchmen. it is the apogee and acme for the medium of sequential art.

and no, moore has publically said there will be no sequel and, given his distain for DC comics and the amazingly awful sequel to Miller's "Batman: Dark Knight" there is no reason to believe otherwise.

i suggest you try one of moore's new works particularly Promethia.

Forthwith

Yeah I read a quote from Moore saying basically,"No no no no no
no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no, there will be
no Watchmen sequel ever."

I highly recommend Top Ten or League of Extraordinary
Gentlemen if you're looking for new Alan Moore stuff. Everything
he's writing at the moment is good, but those two are
particularly top-notch.

I've been reading X-Men for almost 20 years now, and in my
opinion the current Grant Morrison run is the best I've ever read.

This stuff fucking rocks!

kleph
03-05-2003, 06:07 AM
its good but not quite as good as the byrne/claremont run in the 80s.

Forthwith
03-05-2003, 10:47 PM
The Byrne/Claremont run was good, but guilty of that same
self-exposition going on in all comic books of that period. For
example monologues along the line of:

Nightcrawler: mein gott, the supervillain Count Nefaria thinks
to conquer the world, but the X-Men will foil his evil plan to
kill Senator Kelly using those same powers that make the world
hate and fear us, so swears I..... NIGHTCRAWLER!

Both creative teams are the standouts over a 20 year period
though, and it's because both teams were given creative
freedom to write GREAT stories without worrying about
editorial constraints tearing the heart out of the story.

kleph
06-05-2003, 08:15 AM
although there are lots of spots in claremont's intermittable run that he clearly got sloppy the hellfire club/dark phoenix saga was nothing like that. it pushed the boundaries of what a team book could achieve and what we as a readership should expect. it's effects are still being felt in comics (and movies) today. in fact, i'd call it the acme for comics of this period except byrne actually exceeded this with portions of his Fantastic Four run.

it was books like this that made me realise how much of the titles produced by the industry was crap. when secret wars and mutant massacre arrived i had enough and left.

Fuck! Morrison's writing X-Men!?!...

Curse my addicted soul...I've been steering clear of Previews, Overstreet, Wizard and even CSN for the last few years trying to keep my comic titles under 10 per month (I've succeeded thus far BTW)...And now you tell me this!...Gah!!!!

I'd never read (or intended to read) an issue of JLA...Then he starts writing it...Bad man!...

You can pretty much insert "X-Men" in the above statement too now...

oh, and i was reading the LATimes summer movie preview this weekend and they had a story on comic book movies that gave the distinct impression that a Watchmen movie was back on the drawing board. more on this as it develops...

I am loving the Morrison/Bachelo issues of X-Men (sorry Bifrost forgot to tell you about Morrison). I have always been a fan of Cyclops..now with the darkness/cheating and loss of powers..gah Have not enjoyed X-men like this for a loooong time.
Nighcrawler has always been my fav and I'm a little concerned in the direction they are taking him.

Claremont is still my fav writer and its his fault I'm reading more X titles. Damn him..damn him to hell.
Strangely enough I started being a fan of his through Excalibur..yes even despite the Cross-Time Caper run.

The one thing that has got me excited is the fact Whilce Portacio is coming back with Wetworks. Van Damm, that series was great. The art....blown away. Then of course it all went to shit when he left. Thank god Stormwatch: Team Achilles came out.

Damn you Bifrost for pointing out Stormwatch....I'm still under 10 titles a month but you are pushing me.

It took me 1 year to work my way out of the X-Men loop. Couldn't do it cold turkey. And then when I finally got it out of my system, big revamp! Allred on X-Force, Morrison on X-Men, good writers for once. It took a bit of willpower to not get sucked back into that mess.

My current pull-list:

Daredevil
Wildcats 3.0
The Losers
Powers
Blade of the Immortal
Ghost in the Shell 2 (haven't read it yet, just collecting for now)
Savage Dragon (I'm on and off with this one)

And any other one-shot or mini series that catches my eye on the rack.

And in September, STREET FIGHTER 2!!! Yeah!

I'm reading 1602. Only the first issue has come out, but it seems pretty cool so far.
It's set 400 years ago in a world where mutants and superheroes are treated as witches and demonspawn.
What makes it interesting (as if it wasn't already) is that Gaiman is only using characters created in the 1960's.

i think i got it. i found another shop that was run by a guy who is from louisiana and actually used to buy comics in the 80s from the same shop i did in west monroe. he's gonna hold 'em for me until i get back. and i'll stay loyal to his shop, in turn.

so i got the new planetary. >time out for the happy kleph dance< it didn't have that special whup ass on the four i've been itching to see but damn nice nonetheless.

i tracked down Smax #1. it was pretty good but i really got to missing Top Ten reading it.

another suggestion for the folks watching at home is Frank Cho's excellent Liberty Meadows (http://www.libertymeadows.com/). he did it originally as a daily newspaper comic but has since gone to work for image comics. but he's still releasing the series as a monthly book collecting the daily strips (and he's now able to put some of his not-sutable-for-daily-newspaper-readers (http://www.libertymeadows.com/uncengal/images/161.jpg) episodes up).

it's well written and sharply done. sometimes it gets a little cutesy but its worth it for when he's on his mark and really (http://www.libertymeadows.com/uncengal/images/192.jpg)funny ([URL=http://www.libertymeadows.com/uncengal/images/193.jpg ) . and the man can draw a set of cans (http://www.libertymeadows.com/uncengal/images/060.jpg) like no one else on the planet.

also, his comics fight club (http://www.libertymeadows.com/images/ComicFightClubs.jpg) is one of the most hysterical things i've seen in quite some time.

Resurrecting a four year old thread? Bad form!

...

...

Okay, I'm in. What's everybody reading at the mo'? Not including the stuff you just read for the sake of it, but the stuff you're really into.

I've been enjoying Catwoman for a while now. I love that she's on the side of the angels now without having completely changed who she is. She's still the same tough, sexy, independant spirit that always made her so damn appealing, with the addition that she's now a yummy mummy and mentor to a potential next-gen Catwoman (if Holly survives her role in Countdown, anyway). The fact that it's got one of the best portrayals of Batman in comics (and in a supporting role at that!) doesn't exactly hurt.

Birds of Prey is fantastic. The capacity for roster change means there's no contrived plotlines for switching cast, so they can always bring in a new dynamic whenevery they want. Babs as Oracle is fucking fantastic. A much better general than Batman, I reckon. She's got a great counterpoint in the current incarnation of Calculator, who now seems to be obsessed with the identity of Oracle.

Captain America has been fantastic all through Brubaker's run, and Cap dying hasn't changed that. The art is spectacular, too. Some of the stories seem real close to classic superhero stuff, but the art really brings it down to earth for you.

Booster Gold - Booster travels through time to ensure the history of the DCU stays intact, all the while having to remain a complete joke to his friends. It's gold, baby.

X-Factor - damn, Peter David does a brilliant job with these characters. They've all got personality, the stories are going in directions I wouldn't expect, and how can you not love Layla Miller, the girl who "knows stuff"?

Thyrd

Iron Man: despite being depicted as a complete cunt and general punching bag in other books right now, his own series has proven to be win in every issue...even the WWH ones.

Booster Gold: This series has just started but it's god damned awesome already.

Moon Knight: One of my favs. He's a real under dog in the hero business, but written really well. A very underrated book.

Immortal Iron Fist: The new series start out slow, but in the space of 2 issues it became awesome. The back stories they have of the previous Iron Fists are a nice read and expand on the Iron Fist mythos.

The Immortal Iron Fist and Moon Knight revamps are absolutely gorgeous artistically and from a narrative standpoint. I Picked up the hardcovers of the first volumes of each the other day from the Japanese book store in Galleries Victoria for $21.00 a pop. I hope they can keep the consistency with Iron Fist as the latest Moon Knight (13) had absolute garbage artwork and writing which doesn't give me hope that the next few issues will be any good.

Enjoying Doktor Sleepless future science jesus a hell of alot too.

I actually liked issue 13 of Moon Knight. The art suits the gritty world of the book, and when you think about the story in that issue, it's actually pretty good. I thought it sucked first off. Then I thought about it, and read it agani and realised what was actually going on. There's a very subtle twist.

Edit: I'm getting the Iron Fist HC this weekend.

Got the first revamped Thunderbolts hardcover as well (Faith in Monsters) which is alot of fun and a hell of alot more interesting then the shitty old team along with Evil Dead vs Marvel Zombies.

I just cant get over how awesome the pricing at Kinokuniya is for graphic novels. $22.00 for the hardcover vs $17.50 for the scabby soft cover equivalents. I can't get over how absolutely craptacular Countdown is. Arena is fucking pathetic. Taking alternate versions of heroes from the 52 universes and having them kill eachother for no reason? That's fucking gay! It's ruining what SHOULD have been awesome stand alone stories. Gotham by Gaslight, Liberty files and Red Rain Batman have all been ruined by the first issue. It's going to suck badly when they get around to Red Son and DKR Superman. The other bald Superman I could care less about, he's never been seen before.

Shampyon

Yeah, there's definitely a lot wrong with the Countdown. They only just introduced all these new worlds and they're killing them all before we have a chance to enjoy them!
