View Full Version : iPod Vs Washing Machine
So yeah, Mum made me pick up my clothes from my bedroom floor to get washed, and my nice 6 month old Gen2 iPod Nano just happened to be in the front pocket of one of my shirts. That washing machine must be pretty damn vigorous, as there is physical case damage, mostly to the corners, the hold button is now difficult to move, and the base is out of shape. It looks a bit like the washing machine tried to fold it in half down its length.
Q: Does it still work?
A: Sort of.
It works 100% while plugged in to my PC, which I think is pretty darned impressive, however as soon as you yank that little white cord, it dies, screen goes black, music stops playing, and all the eminates from the head phones is a clicking noise. I thought the battery must have been shorted, but when its plugged into the PC, it shows as chargeing, and after a short while it will tell me it is fully charged, plus the clicking noise when unplugged indicates there is some power.
I've pretty much resigned myself to getting a new one, just thought I'd check here to see if you guys have any (free) suggestions, before a fork out a few hundred bucks.

As stupid as this is going to sound, here's my advice. It's fairly practical too.
Don't leave your clothes on the floor, and if you do, make sure you check your pockets before you put your clothes into the wash.
This will help to avoid any further iPod fryings.

another reasons why parents should stay the fuck out of your room. Smack the bitch and make her buy you a new one, if possible a one with a bigger hard drive. She won't know..

It does sound like the battery is borked, which is a fairly likely scenario when you put a lithium battery in a alkaline solution. Go down to Jaycar and buy a new nano battery for $30, and a can of electronic cleaning spray for $10. Use the instructions to replace the battery, and while you've got the thing apart, clean it down with the spray to remove any corrosion. If it works you've just saved yourself a few hundred bucks. If it fails, you've spent $40 and you have a spare battery for when the new one dies in six months

If they had of stayed where they were for another day or two, at some time in that period I would have thought, "where's my iPod?" and gone looking for it. Catastrophe averted.

If it still works on external power I'd try a $30 replacement battery from Jaycar before I'd buy a whole new one.
Oh, I see Lethalcorpse has already said the same thing, Well I've already typed it so I'll be buggered if I'm not going to just press that submit button now.

I've successfully replaced a battery in my old mini following a similar scenario involving capsicum juice. I didn't end up buying the cleaning spray but used vodka and a cotton bud - one year later, my mini still rawks.
I wish you luck and steady hands :D
I'm off to Jaycar, maybe today to see if I can source a new battery, I'll post some pics of the operation once complete.

The best way to clean electronic goods after a salt or alkaline emersion is to use a distilled water bath followed by a concentrated alcohol bath (pure ethanol or methylated spirits) dried off with hot air.
The water displaces the salt/alkaline and then the alcohol displaces the water and evaporates. Vodka is a little risky as it leaves a residue which may end up corroding in the future or provide a different dielectric property which would be a problem in high speed or high power devices.
The number of times I've seen expensive military equipment 'dropped' into the ocean only to be 'fixed' by the above method would shock anyone!
The closer you clean it after you've stuffed it the more chance of success, and don't power up the device before you've cleaned it.
The lithium Ion battery would have experienced a very high load akin to being shorted whilst in the wash, so its buggered and there's very little you can do aside replacing it.

The cove can be a pain in the arse to remove. Just be patient, the instructions are correct, and try not to bugger the tools
Bad news, Jaycar will not have the Nano batteries in stock until 20th May. The couple of online stores that I've checked out also do not stock Nano batteries.

Which store did you go to? Was it just that store, or did they ring around for you? If there are some in other Sydney stores they can get it transferred for you
EDIT: or am I wrong, and the nano was the one we didn't have in stock yet?

That's why you always look in pockets before you put things into the washing and why you always take valuables out of clothing before you discard it on the floor.

No it's not, that's the worst advice ever.
Better advice, tell parents to stay the fuck out of your room.

Better advice yet: Don't buy the nano. Buy the Sansa Express (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,2087805,00.asp). Its cheaper and nicer, and you can add to the memory if you want.

Interesting alternative, if the new battery doesn't work out, which with it being only 3 days until the 20th, I should know soon.

The Sansa Express sounds like something Hugo Chavez would catch between Caracas and Bogota while chanting "Viva Fidel" at high voice.
I love shit-stirring you, Directed :)

My mate had a signed Brisbane Bears jumper from 1994/95ish with all the future Brownlow medallists and many premiership players on it. He left it on his floor, his Mum washed it. He spent about 5 hrs trying to colour the signatures in!!!

I love it, too. But you are correct, and the image of Chavez singing "Viva Fidel" in a high voice on some train in Caracas is making me laugh.

Bear in mind that those dates are estimates only, and are usually based on time to arrival in warehouse. It takes at least a few days to get from the warehouse to the store, and many things can go wrong, like boats being delayed, suppliers being tools, etc. I.e., don't do the dummy spit if you rock up and its not there.

i didn't say it was good advice, i said it was advice, and practical.
Man, do you know how much shit i've left lying around my bedroom, only to pick it up and stick it in the wash because I haven't checked pockets? My home telephone ended up in the washing machine because I had it in the pocket of a baggy jacket and didn't check what was in there.

Farnell. (http://www.farnell.com/) Grown up's Jaycar.
Sure, and if you're lucky Farnell's staff price might be as cheap as Jaycar's retail.
Jaycar pays about as much as any other retailer, which is decent if you're over 21, and beats a poke in the eye with a stick if you're not. Where the money stacks up though is in incentives, if you're in a good store, and in discounts on staff purchases. If you spend a lot of money there as it is, that can amount to quite a lot. I can't detail what the staff purchase policy is, but it's certainly a lot better than the fixed percentage discount cards that you get most other places. The skills they're looking for vary, but as a start you need to be presentable, comfortable dealing with customers, and have basic electronics knowledge. Ideally you're a gun salesman, and have a bachelors in electrical engineering, but we can't all be perfect.
Where do you live?
For anyone who is still interested. I bought a battery from Jaycar, but sadly its a no go.
After successfully extracting the innards of my iPod I found the battery I had been sold is for a first gen nano, however my iPod is a second gen.
