I tried to register online but I don't currently have a credit card, I got through the first 2 steps of the sign-up hoping they had a pay pal option(most do these days) but alas no.

the online entry is now open and that is with the credit card. you can also register by mail with a check or money order but the application form on the site is for last year's race. zip them an email and inquire.

given we've been visited by our first troll in the sub forum, i'll make the announcement i was hoping would not be necessary - the troll policy in the Team ZGeek forum.

actually, the policy is very simple. go for it! troll away! be a complete dickhead in every thread. knock yourself completely out.

oh, but one caveat, it is only permitted AFTER you register to run one of the races.

because if you ain't got the guts to put up, then shut up. take it to fight club or the war forum.

Put me up for 9kms at this stage.

Trying to get into the swing of things and hopefully by that stage 9kms shouldn't be too difficult.

Committed++... money now officially somewhere in the vicinity of mouth.

Taking on the big boy... at least then if I wuss out, I've wussed out of something worthwhile.

Bugger, i'm out then. Gotta wait a couple of years... Might try the 9km one though, i'll think about it.:greenwink

kleph

if you are not 18, you really shouldn't be attempting a marathon. it's a lot of stress on your body that it simply doesn't make sense to endure. if you really are interested in running build the foundations of good mechanics now and then take on the distances later. you'll be a better runner for longer if you do.

my suggestion is try the 9k and develop a good form. its a good opportunity to meet other runners - not just us freaks of Team ZGeek - who can help you advance if that's what you are interested in doing.

Hmmm...Could run 9Km no worries, but I have 2 problems:

1) Isn't it only 42km or 21km? Oh no, I get it now. Well this wouldn't be a challenge if I didn't go for something I've never done before, so I'm shooting for the 1/2 marathon (full marathon scares me witless even now).

2) My gf is due not long before that and I'm thinking that sodding off for a nice run when there's a newborn about might be considered "naughty". Never mind, she just said it was all good and that I have to start training (and the little tacker kicked me really hard in the hand - via stomach - for the first time which was FUCKING AWESOME).

Tentatively sign me up for 21km, but at this stage I struggle with 10, so I am going to need some damn training. I'll sign up on the site maybe tomorrow after I tell my friend who is mad for this stuff that I'm signing up.

kleph
30-05-2007, 11:16 PM
you have plenty o time, my friend. if you can do a 9k now, you have time to prepare for a half-marathon. benwah and i can help you come up with a training schedule if you need.

I did find the Sydney Marathon training schedules on the website. What do you think of them? http://www.sydneymarathon.org/default.asp?PageID=3245

I'm happy for anyone to help me with a training schedule because I have only ever run to stay in my pants (ie. not get humungously fat), so I've never actually had a goal as such.

Damn, you said all I had to do was run from Milsons Point to the Opera House...

Looks like a nice run though. I should try to fit in a working visit to Sydney so I can get out and explore some of the terrain before the event.

if you can take the time off the week before the race, benwah and i'll probably do a tour at some point. the preview of my last marathon (http://www.kleph.com/blog.php?v_blog_id=5&v_blog_entry_id=461) was one of the few things i did right.

when things got bad i was able to focus on specific landmarks instead of distances. as my pace went to shit thinking about distances was essentially the same as thinking about how much longer i had to endure the agony. (YAY! mile 20 - at least an hour more of the torture!)

that line of thought left uncontrolled would have resulted in a DNF for sure. instead, i kept aiming for the next locale i could remember on the course and tried to push everything else out my mind.

Girl.

according to the organizers, the big difference this year is that the course no longer includes observatory hill. a number of runners who have done the race in the past identified this particular quirk of the course as a major problem (http://www.coolrunning.com.au/forums/index.php?showtopic=13772&st=0).

as a result, "the course now follows Hickson Rd to the Harbour pathway underneath the Bridge and onto the boardwalk on the Harbour side of the Park Hyatt , along Campbell Cove to the Overseas Passenger Terminal."

the goal, as i understand it, is to level out the course and make it more time-friendly...

"The Blackmores Sydney Marathon has traditionally been viewed as a tough course with some elites shying away from the event preferring to chase a time on the flat Gold Coast course or elsewhere... With competitor numbers steadily increasing the Festival looks set to top the 21,000 mark this year taking it to the top echelon of participation events in Australia."

Can you put me down for the 9km run please?

As I discovered weekend, 9km seems to be a very good distance for me right now.... pity the city to surf is 14 :(

I'd sign up for the half marathon, but I think I'd need another month or so of training to get to that point.
