i got my start in journalism at the student newspaper at the university of texas at arlington, the shorthorn. i was visiting the site recently and saw they had a slideshow presentation by photographer rebekah workman about one of the school's distance runners, jodi hulett. it's an interesting little peek into the world of someone who has committed themselves to upwards of 60 miles per week.

Inspirational man.

How about music? a track that is keeping me going at the moment is Reign by UNKLE.

Lyrics

I am the lightning, I am the heat
I am the reign, reigner reigner reign all day

I am the reign, I'm gonna reign this way again,
I am the reign

I am the spark, before the blaze,
I am the raindrop out at sea,
I cause the ripples that become the crashing waves,
I am the reign, reigner reigner reign all day
I am the reign

You thought a different day had had come,
A day you thought the earth was done,
And if you could have said it all,
I know you would have said it all

You thought a different day had had come,
A day you thought the earth was done,
And if you could have said it all,
I know you would have said it all

I am the reign, I'm gonna reign this way again,
I am the reign, reigner reigner reign all day

You thought a different day had had come,
A day you thought the earth was done,
I am the reign

And if you could have said it all,
I know you would have said it all,
I am the reign

got a tip about dj steve's running and exercise mixes. each week he mixes a new hour podcast specifically designed for workouts (namely, it has a constant beat per minute throughout).

i love running new routes and not knowing what is around the corner and, each week, dj steve's podcast does the same thing in terms of the music i'm running to.

when does this thread come out as a self help book?

kleph

because that's sometimes the level you are working at in training. please contribute or take your criticism elsewhere.

Everyone I've told that I'm doing this has been really supportive.

I've got a friend (who needs to be more active, so we're doing this for both of us) who will walk with me for 30 minutes on sunday evenings, when I get up to speed I'll use him as my warm up for a run on sunday. I've got a girl from my scooter club who will run with me when I'm up to her speed.

And my dad has been calling me to check how I'm doing... which he never did before with the gym stuff... he felt that paying someone for exercise was a waste of money.

OK...

Run/jog as far as you can comfortably without exhausting yourself.
Repeat that everyday for the rest of the week.
Add 200 metres to that for the next week
Add 200 metres each week

I can tell you that the first two weeks are the hardest, the second two weeks are easier, and after that you may find you actually begin to enjoy it.

Good luck runners

How good was Pre, I even enjoyed the TV movie about him.

kleph

really really good. but, dying so young, he's the embodiment of possibilities unrealized.

an interesting measure of his ability is aerobic capacity. maximal oxygen uptake (V02Max) is the measure of your body's maximum capacity to consume, transport and use oxygen. the better it is, the more you can stave off your lactate threshold - one of the key barriers to your ability to run fast.

elite runners average about 76.9 milliliters of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute. pre is believed to be the upper limit ever measured at 84.4.

one thing i was always struck by were the similarities between him and cobaine. it gets downright eerie at a point.

feel free to suggest quality tuneage for the shuffle. always looking for good running music.

I favour a mix of The Ramones, Stooges, Sex Pistols with some classic 80s Hair Metal - Motley Crue, Poison, Skid Row, plus a bit of more recent stuff like The Living End.

today i learned that nothing inspires you to put in an incredible running effort as someone pulling a gun on you.

Like a rat up a fucking drainpipe I'd say. What on earth did they hope to obtain... soiled running shorts?

Hope you're holding up ok dude.

i wasn't working out, i was in my civilian clothes (and carrying my camera). but muggings of joggers are not unheard of here. but it's not any more dangerous than the usual concerns we all face. the bottom line is you gotta keep aware of your surroundings.

I calculated that, in terms of average momentum, if I ran a four-hour marathon then that is the equivalent of a sixty kilo athlete running a 2:40.

Haile Gebrselassie broke the marathon world record in Berlin on Sunday, posting an official time of two hours, four minutes and 26 seconds.

The 34-year-old Ethiopian beat the mark of 2:04:55 set by Kenya's Paul Tergat in Berlin in September 2003.
