Does anyone know where if at all, I could get a correct (i.e. non "American English") dictionary for the built in spell checker?
I know I could just buy a third party program, but that's not the point.
Also, is there a way to change the built in spell checker to check words that use an apostrophe? for example Don't vs Dont
The Firefox built in checker will offer Don't as a suggestion, where as the OS X one wont offer any suggestions with apostrophes in them.
Any help or ideas would be great.
Cheers in advance.

Hahaha... "Macs are better because they 'just work'". lol.
Seriously, though, this article (http://curmi.com/blog/2007/05/13/improving-mac-os-x-international-english/) might help you out.

My God, have you ever tried to Localise Windows?
During installation there are no less than 5 places you need to set the Region, including the default language.
Why can't Windows change most things once you select say New Zealand like MacOS X does? Yes the manual change of the dictionary is a bit of a pain but then Windows is no better. If you have the Region pane running on Windows it defaults to US English despite you having changed everything to New Zealand everywhere else.
I have my dictionaries like so:
Australian English
British English
Maori
Obviously as a New Zealander we often use Maori words when we speak, especially place names.

The only spell checker that I have ever gotten to work well for me is on Corel Word Perfect.

The only spell checker that I have ever gotten to work perfectly for me is the Oxford Dictionary.

The only spell checker I've used doesn't work. BUT THAT'S BECAUSE I'M NO HARRY FUCKING POTTER!
I think that you're really after a spelling checker. Wizards and witches use spell checkers.
Off-topic, but it's a personal hate...

Now if I had a spelling checker that worked it would have picked up on that :p

Nope. For that, you would need a context checker :p
Sadly, I don't think that they exist just yet...

Did Harry Potter have a spell checker? I seem to remember there being one in Zork: Grand Inquisitor, but not sure about the Hazzizzle.
I think you'll find that the term "spell checker", Spingo, is another american attack on english grammar.
Although, If things keep going the way they have been recently, it'll soon be called "I can has spelllings?"
