I am seriously considering putting myself into debt to buy this camera.

Does anybody else have one and is it worth the months of debt?

can you not get a 2nd hand body and a new more expensive lens?
these days its not just about megapixels, what seperates consumer cameras from excellent ones is the lens. so think about it! (nikon are good but very pricey check out the canon equivelant)

all reports say its a nice camera and the 18-70 is the better lens to go for.
I cannot afford to go for second hand since I have to get it on the never never to afford it in the first place KriseZ.
I was looking at the D80 with the 18-70 lens since that falls in my monthly budget.
Also what is the canon equivalent? I use a Nikon compact at the moment and it produces good results. I like Nikon - easy to use etc. Lenses will have to come later as I get more experienced. My pics are here. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/e1f/)

here is the digital photography review: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond40x/
and i think the digital rebel 400D is the canon equivilant (it's close in terms of price and megapixels anyway)

either way you are going to get a good camera and certainly one that will give you a lot of options to pursue the photographic efforts you've started.
Thank you everyone. Very much appreciated.

the d80 is really a step up from the 400, its really in a class of its own so you cant compare directly, just like the 5d.
I think I am gonna just go buy one and the 18-70 lens to go with.
Thanks Dozer.

another option you might investigate is renting. you may be able to find a camera shop that will rent you the camera and lens for a reasonable price. that way you can give it a test run before you decide to buy.
also, i've been using an 18-75 lens with my Canon 30D and i've been very happy with the results. it's turned out to be a very good multi-use lens. my problem now is should i buy new lenses for the 30D or upgrade to the 5D?

I think the canon 400 and the Nikon d40x are similar cameras. Both 10M pixel. I want a d80. Just don't really want to spend the money.
The D40x has the same censor as the D80 but the reset of its guts are from the d40.
