Windows Mobile 6 Update for Dopod D810
For those of you who missed the update from HTC/Dopod, fret not! This ROM updates the D810 from WM5 to WM6 and enables the GPS, get it here (http://rapidshare.com/files/42337174/D810_ANZ_WM6_Upgrade_20070709.zip) you'll need to download Activesync 4.5 or higher to load the ROM, and you can get it from Microsoft for free, start here (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/activesync/default.mspx)

GPS Software
Right, now you've got that, you want to utilise your very ace new GPS right?

Well you'll need TomTom software and maps. Get the torrent here (http://www.torrentspy.com/torrent/1143846/TomTom_6_with_Australia_Map)

And for driving in the car, you'll want some voices to tell you where to go. Fancy John Cleese or Tony Montana? Get the torrent here (http://www.torrentspy.com/torrent/1203579/TomTom_8_voices)
80 voices to choose from

KisEz's install Instructions for the TomTom

Unzip tomtom 6 to your desktop
Create a file on your storage card called TomTom
Copy over FOLDERS Australia, and Guam, and FILES tomtom_navigator_6.cab and tomtom_today.cab

NOT VOICES!

so crack your card back in, file explorer, run navigator_6.cab and select either storage card or internal, it doesnt matter it will install to internal anyway.
let it finish, if you want a tomtom icon on your today screen run today.cab

run tomtom for the 1st time, select GUAM, then you can register with any code more than 0 alpha's.

once its loaded, your gps device is OTHER NMEA GPS (cabled icon) 115200 baud, and its on com9, change maps to aussie, and begin customising.

voices: you should have a folder with a million files in it, each has a name dataXX.XXX and are in triplets. read the readme for what voice is what, then copy only the ones you want to try into : /My Device/Program Files/Navigator/voices
then delete the "collected" ffile so it rescans for new voices on next load.
delete all the shit voices from inside the program.

I also highly recommend some games for it, my personal favourites are available from this guy (http://www.windowsgames.co.uk/)

Once again, massive thanks to KrisEz for his help in showing me where to find all this stuff! Rep him, you know you want to :D

Got anything cool to add for a windows based PDA? I wanna know.

Is this a PDA or a phone or some unholy union of the two?

It looks very much like a PDA - could you elaborate on why, if i was looking for a PDA/etc I'd go for the dopod instead?

Yes and No.

Yes it's a PDA / Phone.

Now I'll tell you why I chose it.

I wanted to upgrade from my old imate Pocket PC.

I wanted another PDA phone again, this time I wanted GPS in it as well.

This certainly limited my choices.

From that I reduced it again because I wanted it to be windows based. - that ended the N95, though it is a very cool device

Continued to cut it down by the need for it to have a touchscreen, not fucking blackberry type buttons. - End the HP version

That left me with with the Mio A701 and two Dopods (D810 and P800W).

Boss cut it down further by insisting that it have at least 3G. - no more MIO.

Well after looking and comparing, thsi was the device to have.

and as for the iphone, dopod concedes an extra touch point on the screen, then shows off inbuilt GPS, 3G, and, if rumors are true and the miniSD card is miniSD-HC compatible, 12 gig of memory.

anyway, i have this phone, its tops, i run so much software the thing is full! (at the moment i have it hooked up to lappy, and im using it for internet, which it will happily do at the same time as i make calls, take messages, check email on phone etc...)

the nokia is good because gawsh its a nokia, you can drop it, and it has a relatively easy to use interface.
dopod, being windows mobile (5 on release, 6 with patch) is a little harder, but its up to you how you want to do it, you can get thumb button programs, so you can jam at the screen without your "special dialing wand", or you can use voice recognition, which is truly recognition, not comparison. people are amazed they can pick up my phone, push the on button and ask it to call someone "call [name]" repeats back to you "call [name] on home or mobile" "mobile" "beep"

3D rendered games! take that NGAGE.

universal learning remote control, with "codebases" that are highly cross format compatible

a good, easy to navigate (html in wm6) email client!

if you need to, for reasons only known to yourself, you can make it behave exactly like the UI on the iPhone, or just use the parts of it you like.
basically, if theres something you dont like, you can change it.

i bought the external media control adapter, which converts the usb b type plug to a little play/stop send/end (plus mic) control with a 3.5mm stereo socket, as i use it ALL the time for work. i use it to spectrum analyse sounds and to play music/loops/stings/speakerphone.

windows movie maker (check your start menu, its there!) Natively compresses almost any media you can play, to a format that suits (windows mobile fullscreen playback)
a simpsons episode will cost you 30 mb on your card and will run at over 15fps which is very watchable.

warez!!!!! sure if you like software, buy it, but seriously, everything is available to some extent on the 'tubes.

its activesync! (sure the haters may hate all they want) but as long as you dont fuck with it too much, it will just sit there, and do its thing, and your contacts/email/notes/favourites... so on (windows media sync i wouldnt touch with a 40 foot touching pole its so itunes its not funny)

it works as a personal area bluetooth network host on both mac and pc for all your internet sharing needs (i have tested with mac, is very good.)

messenger on your today screen! why ever be offline! (oh thats right, to play RL)

the ONLY thing i would change with the dopod is the battery. if you play with it all day you will have to charge it every night. i think ill get a spare battery. this phone is also known as the HTC Trinity or HTC P3600 and is very popular overseas. look it up as trinity and youll find theres a million nerds working on a million different things for it.

I know its not a dopod, but its the same software. I used TomTOm and a blue tooth GPS receiver when the wife and I hired a car in europe. It worked an effing treat. I've also used it for work and will copy the files over to my new PDA/Phone when I get one soon.

Highly recommend it for anyone who travels for a living.
