From whirlpool:
I'm leaning towards the Dopod, mainly because with WM6 the push email, outlook & office interoperability, and third party software seem much stronger. From what I gather the 810 seems better for PDA functions, and the N95 better for camera/multimedia, but I don't care that much about the camera/multimedia.
These are the advantages to each as I see them:
Dopod D810:
- Cleaner push email/office integration
- Better battery life
- More 3rd party apps with WM6 vs Symbian
- Gets GPS lock quicker
- Touch sensitive screen, and can use onscreen keyboard rather than T9
- Scrollwheel
- Don't have to worry about N95's high pitched whine issue
Nokia N95:
- Better camera (5mp, I believe it has a lens cover)
- Able to synch automatically via bluetooth as soon as you're in range of your laptop
- FM radio
- Normal headphone jack
- Numeric keypad
Fair comments?
I'd be in the same boat as the person who posted that, in it more for PDA type stuff than camera/multimedia so the Dopod would be the one?

seems fair enough to me.
It's actually the whirlpool forums that put me onto the D810 as a GPS unit, before I only thought of the the ugly D800W.
Basically they are both great devices, you just need to find which works best for you. I just want to make people aware that there is an alternative to the N95.

Kurtz: Is there a way to extract the co-ordinates from the GPS and put them into excel?
Any idea on the accuracy (in metres) of the GPS? Best I've heard of in PDA's is about 1m.

Added a poll - hope the options are ok...
Just for the record I prefer PocketPC-based devices. I just love the extra-configurability (is that a word) that comes with Windows Mobile 6....

Depends - the GPS chip in the Dopod is a bit older, but I get my readings in Degrees and Minutes - (Minutes & Seconds together at 5 digits.
So
158.86734
123.95278
I dunno about dump to excel, but you can save positions to favourites. I assume that would be a file you could extract.

A bit obsessed with the Dopod, aren't you Kurtz? Why can't you just be happy with what you bought without trying to compare it to something else all the time? If this thread helps someone decide one way or the other, great, but somehow I doubt that was your only motive. Fanboyism isn't very informative in the end.
Is there anyone who has actually used both devices? That would probably be more insightful. Specs listings can be a bit misleading. I have nfi which is greater because I haven't even seen the other irl.
From my personal history : I used to have a PDA but as smartphones developed I noticed that each of my phones started to steal more and more roles from the PDA and still function as a phone so I started to lean that way.
P.S. The poll says N65, I don't believe that model exists. (edit: fixed)
P.P.S. I got laid by using the N95 - true story.

I've got the N95. Seriously, true story.
I've not seen the DoPod 810 but it is interesting. The reasons I got my N95 was mainly because it's being offered cheaply now and it is such a great phone.
The GPS kicks ass. It can be a little innacurate some times and totally useless in the CBD. Plus the auto rotating maps that I saw in the navman gps systems are much better. But still it is a phone, not a dedicated GPS unit, so for that am happy. When it's outside the city, the GPS works perfectly and thanks to the free sports tracker software, you can export your recorded trips straight into google earth so you can see where you have been. It's really freaking cool! It also exports to excel or as an xml document. It also records a bunch of other stuff like speed vs distance and bunch of other stuff for stats lovers.
Druid posted about a recorded air trip he took with the GPS on. So that's what you can do with the GPS. Plus you have google maps, and the mapping software on the phone that you have to pay to get features like spoken directions on. That sucks.
The music player is awesome, the dual slide screen and button sets makes it easy to control you music or video playback. Video playback is good too. I am currently using the free nokia suite to convert my videos into mp4. The quality is excellent. You can also get a free Divx player for the phone now too.
Nokia also include a bunch of other shit to keep you happy. Lifebloging is great. All the photos you take can be uploaded to Flickr with a few clicks. You can even keep a blog via the phone if you really want to type a blog with your keypad. It also syncs with my outlook and all the pictures, video and music on my phone. It does this by bluetooth as soon as my phone is in range and its great as it takes the hassle of remembering to upload all my photos to the computer.
Wifi works well. I can use it anywhere in my house. I use a belkin N91 router... it totally kicks ass for range :)
The camera is excellent. It does the job. Plus with the free wwigo software you can turn your phone into a wireless webcam over a bluetooth connection.
Finally there are two speakers on the side of the phone which make the LOUD NOISES. The screen also looks awesome, it does good 3d (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7AVHqaQGq8). I think it's the same as the ngage... I am speculating. I could be wrong but it looks as good.
Finally I think the phone looks and feels fucking awesome. I love the slidy screen. It has heaps of gadgets for me to play with and there is a good community of n95 users on the net so there is always something new to play with.

While I have not used either device, I have used other Windows mobile devices, and I have used other Symbian 60 devices.
It's my personal opinion that I would have neither.
Any Symbian S60 device gets ruled out immediately because of the rudimentary SSL stack that is presently built in to the OS. This would prevent me from using the phone to sync with the two Exchange servers that I would want to sync with. Without being able to do this, I may as well get a regular phone. Not to mention that any kind of certificate "management" in S60 is like fighting a losing battle - and I tend to deal with a lot of SSL certificates (various WiFi networks, Web Servers, two-factor authentication, etc).
The second thing that I really want from a phone is a full keyboard - the Dopod D810 would be perfect if it had the slidey-out keyboard that the D838 Pro has - but the D838 Pro doesn't have a GPS unit.
I'm sure that it will only be a m

lol - decision made. Enjoy your awesome new gadget!
I was going to say if you want to compare them, both devices are being sold by Three.
And Spingo, I deliberately shied away from the 838 slidy keyboard thing, because I find it such a hassle to type using those keyboards, easier with the on-screen keyboard and stylus.
I was seriously tempted to buy a virtual keyboard whilst i was in Bangkok - laser projection keyboard - but even I couldn't justify the geekiness versus the spend - 15,000 baht, or $AUD 500.
And Druid, after everyone blowing their load over how perfect the N95 was, i wanted to point out that there are alternatives available to do the same things.
In fact I have put 1 guy at work onto a D810, but 2 onto N95s.
Yeah, I love my device, but I'm not preaching about it, just letting people know it's avaialable along with a few others

I guess that's just a difference between our preferences - for my, stylus + screen keyboard = 2 hands, whereas the slidey keyboard does allow you to use one hand. Of course, you still have the option to use the stylus too.
I personally don't mind the slidey keyboard things once you get used to balancing the device. I'll admit that it does take some getting used to - picking one up for the first time, you're likely to drop it if you're not careful.
