The other night at a mate's party I got a drink spilled on my Nokia 6280 and I didn't notice this until the day after. I pulled the shell off and took out the battery, sim card & SD card, wiped them all off and let it dry out. After putting it back together i realised that -

the 1, 2 & 3 keys arent working
there is no sound coming out of the speaker, though there is an icon on the screen saying that I have the headset plugged in, when I don't. I have a feeling something may be shorting it, rather than the speaker itself being buggered.

I'm not sure what to do about it because I am completely clueless when it comes to phones. I don't think it would be covered under warranty, so is it worth getting it repaired or just buying a new phone? If I bought a new phone what would be the best way of going about this (I have been a 24-month contract with 3 since last November)

If anyone has any suggestions that would be fantastic :D

The speaker on my 6280 died all by itself. Nokia fixed it no questions asked. So it shouldn't be an issue for you.

The first mistake was getting a 6280. Every person i know with that phone (about 10 people, they are pretty common at uni) has had a problem with it. I think Nokia still hasn't worked out that phone. Most of their other phones dont seem to be anywhere as problematic as the 6280.

I would suggest getting it repaired though, it should be covered under warranty. However, if not weigh up the cost of having it fixed versus the cost of paying out the phone now and getting a new phone contract.

take it back to where you bought it, say you turned it on one day and it was all weird.
DO NOT MENTION OPENING IT OR SPILLING OF DRINK.
wait patiently and get new phone

I actually like my 6280, I haven't had any problems with it until now. Though I do realise it is a buggy phone (hence why several places have stopped offering it and opting for the 6288 instead) I might just borrow my house mate's old phone for the moment and take it into the 3 store on the weekend and see what they say.

Nokia have a policy that they will repair a phone four times before it will be replaced. I know this because the jobsworths told me both times I've taken my piece of shit 6280 in to be fixed.

I work in a mobile phone store..so here it goes.

Take it back to the people you bought it from. They won't replace it. They will send it away under warranty and depending on the store and company they will provide you with a loan phone.

The first thing they will check for with any warranty repair is any form of physical or liquid damage. If they find any form of water damage, your warranty is void. The fact that a few of your keys aren't working is a clear indication of water damage.

If you opted to select insurance when you signed your contract you can make an insurance claim.

If you don't have insurance, you have to buy a new phone.

There is a spray made by some company that makes an alternative to wd40. This spray is a special electronics cleaner that evaporates extremely quickly.

I'd suggest trying something like that with the power off except i can not remember the name of the product. It was something contact cleaner and was a white can with light blue text and outline. I've used it to clean up spills on electronics, it works wonders.

the liquid will have left a residue, so good luck getting warranty, 3 doesnt do insurance either, the cunts.

the problem really happened when the liquid got in there with the power, so drying it out isnt likely to fix something that has already been fried.

clean it as best you can, then send it back for warranty anyway and see what happens!

Many Nokia phones have small indicators built into them to show water damage. They change colour when exposed to liquids. Not all models have them, and they don't always work, but if they find water damage you'll have to pay for any work they've done.

Best bet is to find a way to link your phone to your job and just claim the thing as a tax deduction ;-)

I dropped one in the bath once... shirt pocket, leaned over to check the temperature before the kids got in. Screen died, but the rest of the phone was fine. Took it into the Optus shop and told them it died, they replaced the screen on it.
