I'm thinking about moving to Melbourne.

Particularly looking at areas in the west, in and around Footscray where I will be potentially gaining employment. I don't know many people from that way, any Melbourne Zgeeks know much about this area? The rent on properties looks suspiciously cheap, is it a crappy area? Lots of crime? Built on an ancient aboriginal burial ground? Radioactive!? Does it just plain stink? Whats the deal? It looks like the ideal spot for me though, I'm used to living in crappy areas, it really can't be much worse than where I am now. ADVICES? THANKS GUISE :3

Footscray gets a bad rap but it's ok. Cheap food, all the usual sort of shops you need, decent pubs. Kick the vomit and syringes off the path and it scrubs up ok. Mind you I don't think I've been to Footscray in about a decade or so. There used to be an awesome little caravan under where the railway station is that made and sold jam donuts. They fried the donuts right there in the caravan and then squirted the jam into them with a little handpump in the shape of a dolphin and the jam came out the dolphin's snout. They sold the donuts for about 30c each.

Well, I'm living in an area full of junkies and hookers right now it's not that bad, I mean they're not the type that are really going to cause problems, they tend to just scurry off to their lairs when they get their drugs and aren't a hassle. I guess I can deal with that but was hoping to not have to...where else can I go that's not too far away from that area and won't give me a blood borne disease from just rolling to the shops without shoes on?

Great part of town. Under fucking rated. Drugs cost half what they do in the Eastern suburbs.

Williamstown is a nice little spot. Full of wankers trying to pretend it's not a working-class suburb, but kick them off the path and it scrubs up ok too. I lived there for a year and a half. Great pubs, shops can be a bit of a hassle, the supermarket there didn't open on Sundays when I was living there, but I assume that's changed. The Chinese takeaway used to do awesome dim-sims at forty cents each.

Newport, Spotswood and Yarraville are in between Williamstown and Footscray along the Williamstown branch of the railway line. They're a bit boring, but cleaner than Footscray, both have decent pubs and reasonable shops.

Anything North or West of that and it's just deepest, darkest suburbia. Cookie-cutter houses backed up against factories, although parts of Altona are ok.

The other option is to go for somewhere like Moonee Ponds, Ascot Vale or Essendon.

Hmmm! The choices! I can handle the junkie type areas and I am impressed by drugs on occasion, the cheapness of the area definitely appeals to me. But then again paying more to live in an area where you don't feel you need to hide a weapon in every room is worth the extra money, but then I get to go out and play less. I think I hate wankers more than junkies though. Footaids maybe worth the extra play money.

Thanks for the run down everyone, you can all come to my house and play with ninjas when/if I decide to make the move :3

A user called polite left this in my rep comments "I never neg- rep. But fuck you. Juvenile." for saying this:

Well, I'm living in an area full of junkies and hookers right now it's not that bad, I mean they're not the type that are really going to cause problems, they tend to just scurry off to their lairs when they get their drugs and aren't a hassle. What gives? I'm serious, I don't want to live in a shitty, drug infested, low socio-economic populated area anymore. A friend of our family contracted Hep C from a needle while doing building work around here, digging around in the ground.

Shit, last year our neighbour 2 doors up was BLOWN UP in mysterious circumstances, his entire fucking house burnt to the ground within an hour and he burnt alive in it. I caught the aftermath on camera I'll upload it. Things are always blowing up around here because of crack-labs, but I'm pretty sure this dude WAS BOMBED intentionally, we knew him and he wasn't a crackhead cooking up shit.... We heard the BOOM and as soon as we got out there it was already too late, flames BELCHING out meters up into the sky already. There are plenty of shootings and dudes have been beaten to death on the end of my street.

I was hoping to not have to deal with these kinds of shenanigans anymore...

But if Footscray isn't THAT BAD i.e. people getting stabbed/blown up and infected with things like here...then I can dig it.

What about out wester towards Sunshine, or the more central western areas like yarraville? I'd prefer to be out west as thats where I'll be working, Williamstown sounds OK I've got a car..transport is not an issue.

OOH OH OH there is this house on our street we call 'the murder house' because it just looks like people get taken there by serial killers and murdered, its seriously fucking scary, words cannot impart the fear you get from looking at it. You can feel the death coming from it. It's intense. I'll get photos of the murder house along with the black shell of bob's old house where he was fire bombed and post them, chilling visions. Can't wait to move XD

Dwarfy - the donut van is still in footscray at the station - and the old guy that would've been running it a decade ago when you last went, is still there, only his son runs the place now - and it'll go on like that forever I think - coz they were there when I was a young lass catching trains with my parents around age 4 and I hope they're gonna still be there when I die, coz I want their donuts served at my wake.

SevNin - I live in St Albans - bout 20 mins from Footscary and the west isn't as bad as people make it out to be. If you're already living in an area similar to Footscary where you are (yes, the typo IS intentional) then you'll fit right in.

If you have myfarce i mean facebook, go here (http://www.facebook.com/board.php?uid=5148727614) it'll give you the most accurate picture of who'll you'll be living near - provided you're prepared for ginos and marias :D

Plus, I live in the west, and I'm not dead yet.

I live in Sunshine, now that you've mentioned it. It's working class suburbia, is the best way to describe it, but if you can dig that then you'll find it's ok. I'm in zone one, 5 minutes walk from a train station, 10 minutes walk from the shops and 20 minutes by train to Melbourne Central.

muppet
11-03-2008, 09:21 PM
Pretty much what cassa said - also, the rent is decent - I'm in a 5 year old 3 bedroom villa unit, and I've been paying $180pw for the past 4 years.. I rent privately, and my landlady loves me, and has given me an open ended lease for the rest of my life if I so choose, at the same rent, forever. So yeah, I'm happy. Plus, there are some nice parts - like where I am, we're 500 metres from the station, the estate is only 6 years old and we're close to everything. Only we're zone 2 not 1 but oh well can't have everything. I'm 5-10 minutes from every shopping centre near my house - keilor downs, brimbank, watergardens, delahey village, I'm 25 mins drive from the city via the freeway, my neighbours don't annoy the shit out of me, and the bottleshop down the road sells grog and smokes cheap, so EvilMuppet and myself can keep our seperate addictions funded :D

Mups, what are ginos and marias? I don't think we have them here, we have fully sik mate bros...like guidos...do you mean guidos?

I don't know if I want to be in Footscary on my own then. I mean, I don't know anyone down there...I have peeps here, so it's not as scary as it could be.

Sunshine is only 20 minutes from melbourne CBD Cassa? That sounds cool. I think I can handle working class suburbia...I'm looking to rearrange myself into the professional, middle class strata of society with this move anyway.

I'll check it out thanks! :3

my not being out of zone 1 has more to do with not ever driving and that once you live in your neighbourhood, i find you rarely leave except for holidays, etc or to visit someone.
i wish i did know more about different parts of melbourne but i've only been here 4yrs and i only really know where i've lived around.

(As above) They mean train and tram Connex zoning - check this link to see what they mean as well:Connex Network Map - Trains (http://www.connexmelbourne.com.au/media/images/network_map.gif)

Blue is Zone 2, yellow is zone 1. A station that has both blue and yellow means you can have either a zone 1 or zone 2 ticket if you get off at that station. If you live and work in zone 1, a ticket is more expensive than living and working in zone 2. Zone 1 and 2 tickets are the most expensive eg. you live in zone 2 and work in zone 1, or vice versa. Ticket prices are quite expensive here - a zone 1 ticket for a month is just over $100. Not all station names correspond to suburb names either, so have a look at a Melway to see the area the station is in.

Hey dwarfy, I thought yarraville, williamstown etc were some of the worst to get caught up in the property boom, last I read some of those inner west suburbs were approaching mid-eastern prices.

So I understand zones now I want to be in zone 1 definitely, thanks Cassa, skylar, you are good people. Muppet, you are a bad person, zone 2...*Shakes head*. :3

Why the no driving though? I like driving. It seems you Melbourne peoples don't really get down with your automobiles. Do you seriously think I don't need it to live in zone 1? I'm considering selling it for the move anyway. I hate catching public transport but thats because here everyone on buses and trains stink and are looking to rob you.

Do you guise have any opinions on the southern west areas around kingsville?

Cassa
11-03-2008, 10:21 PM
Kingsville is not well serviced by public transport. The Westgate bridge can be a bottleneck in peak hour so I would think about that.
For the most part, inner suburbs are quite well serviced by public transport so you shouldn't really need to drive

You all have given me much to consider and I appreciate it greatly.

I'm rather keen on moving out of N.S.W...and I'm just about convinced its an awesome idea now. XD

Sunshine, Braybrook, Maidstone, those areas look nice, are affordable, close to where I need to be and the CBD...I'm sold! Fuck Footscary and Wankerstown! Thanks heaps for the advices.

hahaha Cassa aren't you in Albion? Which, really, is zone 1 mixed in with a bit of zone 2? :p so Cassa's just as bad as me.

I'd die without my car, SevNin. I COULD catch PT to work, but I cbf and it's too much of a hassle anyway . Plus, they don't let me smoke on trains and that sucks too. Oh wait, I don't smoke in my car anymore - but still, you get my point.

If you're even considering moving out a little bit further - but you're working in Footscary, then also have a look around Sydenham and Delahey, you can find some decent places close to transport (if you're looking for PT that is), like I said, I'm a 500m walk from the train station at Keilor Plains. I'm just too lazy to PT :D

And Dwarfy - I don't know if they still have the dolphin, I haven't been there in years, but my mum brings me donuts whenever she goes to forges :D

Hardly. I live about a 2 minute walk from Williamstown station and it's a 20 minute ride to Flinders including a few minutes wait at Newport.

Anyway Williamstown kind of defeats the purpose of living in the West. We just moved here because we're Altona people who didn't want to move too far away.

Braybrook/Sunshine area is conveniently located and inexpensive to rent.

If the rent seems affordable to you, Seddon and Yarraville are nice suburbs these days. Really short train ride to the city (10 minutes or so), and if you drive to the city you can take smaller streets and get to the CBD in 20 minutes during peak hour. If you worked in North Melbourne or West Melbourne it'd be a 10 to 15 minute drive in peak hour.

If you're looking at Footscray/Kingsville, the best areas are just to the South West of Buckley St and Victoria St (on Emma St, Pilgrim St etc), and the best value is around Cruickshank park which is a bit further from town, but a nice area and rent is a lot lower.

i remember when I was a little kid we could jump on the train at St Albans and go to Albion for 90c (only buying a zone 2 DAILY TICKET..) and spend the day bowling for $6.50 - cheapest day out ever, and heaps of fun too. Around Newmarket, especially right by the station is by far the only place in the West I've ever liked...so I live in the East, the North wasn't too bad but it wasn't for me anymore.

I'd recommend a place on the eastern side of the Newmarket station, it's got some awesome places there, the food is good, the shops are close and the transport is awesome.

I agree, I'll never move to Footer's cray. I lived in Zburg Nth for 6 or so months before moving to London - DO NOT move to the North part of Zburg - its like 15 minutes drive to anything and it was really shit.

I have nice things to say about Richmond and I lived in Malvern for a while too. Malvern is full of nice old ladies that pull you up on the footpath and yammer on for hours which can be annoying if you're life philosophy is to hate everything and everyone. The best thing about malvern is that its easy to get anywhere in melbourne from there. But it is expensive.

Don't even consider Dandenong - world's shittest suburb. Frankston is pretty shit too, but hey at least it has a beach.

lol rofl. awesome.

I'm not sure atm...I'm being interviewed for a position there so I have to consider the possibility...although I had an interview in Sydney yesterday that went really well and the job there is way more attractive than the Melbourne one...so if they offer me the Sydney job I stay here for at least another 12 months. I hate Sydney its expensive and rude; but this is a balls out hardcore fucking opportunity for me that I can't turn down no matter how much I hate Sydney.

Me and my partner want to get out of here ASAP...and Melbourne is top on the list of rad places to go...so this thread hasn't been in vain :3

Beware... If you move to Melbourne you'll have a bunch of pretentious arseholes asking you if you think Melbourne is better than Sydney...

Don't ever mention to Melbournians that you're from Sydney because they have hang-ups... I'm sorry i'm trying to be fair but after living here for 8 months i've learnt not to mention that i'm from Sydney.... I've learned it's better to pretend that I know where something is in Melbourne than state that I don't....

You try to deflect by saying "from not around here" but that doesn't work. For as expensive and rude that Sydney is (of which I agree), Melbourne is four-fold as pretentious.

I don't give a fuck about the place I live, it's how I run my life that counts. I've moved country, outback and interstate.... But melbourne has taken the cake...

Don't get me wrong Melbourne is a great city, beautiful city.... but its gotta stop trying to one up everybody.

WOWZORS!

I'm not moving to Melbourne this year.

I landed the more hardcore/better paying/awesome opportunity Sydney job.

Thanks for the Melbourne advice though everyone, I still want to get down there eventually once I finish the program I just accepted...Melbourne does sound rad but there was no way I could say no to this opportunity. OMG.

Maybe next year Melbourne dudes...XD

Hey I would like to resurrect this thread as I am not only thinking of moving to Melbourne - I will be in about 2 months. I have accepted a job over there starting around the 1st July.

So I will be packing up my crap and getting the hell out of Perth. Any advice would be appreciated. I am looking a bit further out as I have a wife and a couple of kids and also houses are bloody expensive in close. I like the look of the hills areas but they may be a bit too far away.

Thoughts?

Where are you working? Make sure you check out the availability of schools/public transport anywhere you decide to buy because there is a decided lack of both in the fringes. And which hills are you talking about? There are plenty around.

edit: There are some areas that are in close enough but are fairly under rated as well. You'd do well to check out the North Eastern suburbs I reckon.

The Viets tell me that Footscray proper is not a good area, but that Footscray West is better.

Some real estate agent told me that at the beginning of the year when i was looking for a new flat.

Thankfully i ignored her and found a nice little place in West Melbourne.
The people that moved out of my place were viets, they moved to footscray, they said its fine if you're vietnamese.

where abouts in melb is the job Gronk?

find somewhere that's situated close to schools & transport - you'll appreciate that when the kids are older (if they're not already old enough to PT to school) as well as something that'll get you onto the freeways quickly if you're travelling by car.. also if you're looking for train stations to park your car at, suss them out too because some are safer than others - good to know if you're working late..

Check out the usual places for housing - www.domain.com.au - as well as the local papers for the specific area you're looking at.. the one's in the west around my area are The Advocate and i can't remember any more oops there goes that train of thought

There is also a lot of Sudanese(sp). However what they said about Footscray west is true, it is much better than Footscray itself.

Thanks for all the tips guys. I am here and have started work (at Crown) and everything is humming along.

I bought a place in Upwey - Miles out but right near the train and it is a cute little community. There was snow around on the weekend which spun me right out.

But Melbourne is beautiful and I am totally loving it here. I look forward to meeting some of you guys at one of the future meet ups.

Mate of mine just quit his job as a dealer at Crown, he couldn't stand it. 2 months of nights, 2 months of days... and each one 8 hours of pure boredom, apparently.

In the IT dep - I transfered from Burswood in Perth. No shift work for me luckily - just the usual after hours work that come with the territory in the IT game.
Yeah Upwey is nice but bloody far. I am powering through the books on the train though :)
