m'kay, since Soc and Stocking are travelling to the UK soon, and Soc expressed an interest in meeting up (although god knows why they'd want to do a silly thing like that!)...should we actually get up off our fat lazy British arses and organise a get together?

I reckon that coz there are only a few of us, and we're pretty far apart (from what I can remember) maybe we should meet somewhere pretty central like Birmingham rather than London.

Ya never know...it might even be quite good fun!

Sound's cool..It's us out in the sticks, we all, (well, me anyway!) have a chip on our shoulder's about everything revolving around London! I dunno if those of you in Ausland have the same sort of thought's...It get's really annoying when (say) the new national footie stadium would (and has been recently *shown* to be) much better for the majority of fan's if it was more centrally located (i.e. Birmingham). Recently the atmosphere at the match's played in the 'regions' was loads better than at wembley but the London based people who make these sort of decision have decided, guess what....that it should be in LONDON; what a fukin surprise!

Still, if it's London, then London it is! Looking forward to meeting all..hope they are at least prepared to give me a chance:D

Stocking and I in no way favour London over any other part of England, or indeed the entire UK or even the complete European Union. We only chose London for the first get-together because we will be staying with her brother when we arrive, and he lives in London. We certainly plan to visit other parts o the country, including (but not limited to) Birmingham, Manchester, Brighton, Southend, Scotland, Wales and Ireland...:D

Anyway, in discussion with dr-x in irc we decided to propose the date of June 28 (that's Saturday week) for the First Official UK Zmeet, to be held at a venue (but probably a pub) somewhere in London (as close as possible to tube access for all concerned would be the go, I guess)... so, is this date agreeable with everyone? If not, suggest others... but keep in mind Stocking and I are probably heading to Europe before the end of the month.

Hi all, right, this is aimed at all those who give a shit and/or especially the 'UK Zgeek meet' thread.
I will not be around very much at all for about the next 5 weeks. (I can hear the sobbing from here, but, don't worry, I'll be back:)
I have had a few cash flow problems so, rather than prostitute myself on e-bay like a recent postee, (even though I would undoubtably come out of it a millionaire:rolleyes: ) I have not paid last months Blueyonder account! Now that I have had this months bill, and I can only afford 2/3 of the combined bill this month, they will cut off my net access <PROPER sob>.:( until it is all paid (basically, around the 23rd of July).
I will have very limited access at work, and, as I am on holiday from work next week, not even that from 21/6/03 until 30/6/03.
Although I will obviously miss you all (and the news page will probably miss me, even;) , I am worried I will miss the arrangements for the meet up of us geekers in the UK when Soc & Stocking come over. I have passed my phone numbers on to MisterBishi (prostates self before him) so if I'm not around when the arrangements are finalised could someone please give me a call to let me know what's happening.
I think I will be cut off on the 18th so appreciate me whilst I am here.:D :D
Sorry if I have bored you with info you don't really care about but *I* care about it, and therefore it is vital!:p
Hope to hear from someone at least, I will access the net whenever I can but may miss some things so please humour me even more than usual!
With love, And3w

PS. a small image to remind you of me (the date's are wrong though..lol)

how about Covent Garden? That's always nice in the summer, we can sit out if the weather's nice, and there's the option of going on to a club if we're all up for it?

Yes, Bostonmess, even though that gag *did* make me laugh, pls keep on topic - I *am* still a mod here, you know (he he):D

Anyways, Stocking and me have arrived safe and sound here in Old Blighty and are staying in Rotherhithe (Docklands area) ... as far as I know, Saturday the 5th should be fine - we'll plan to head to the continent after that, but I'd better check with "she who must be obeyed" (thanks Rumpole) before I can give this date the definite nod.

Oh, and today we organised a local SIM card for the mobile phone - our number is 07906097744 ... feel free to give us a call (except between midnight and 9am, unless you're calling to give me a job or lots and lots of fmoney).

OMG "She who Must Be Obeyed." That's what I used to call my g/f. And I thought I was the original one, well apart form H Rider etc :). Anyway drifting off topic a bit now, you do realise that London is loads more expensive than the rest of the UK? At least it was when I went a few years ago. Especially the Bed and breakfasts (which is what they call the hotel rooms type things, don't know if you needed to know that?).

Anyone else got any input about the expense side of things? Is it even relevant? Are you millionaires?

How about Blackpool? :D

i like that idea,
im also going to go while shops are open, although, no idea of timing yet????? because my art teacher told me that theres a shop that sells chainmale (chainmail?) & i really want to go there.

i think it is still a little more expensive, but if its aq chain or something then it shouldnt be different to anywhere else. but having said that i havent been out in london all that often.

why? is blackpool near you? i cant say i know how to get there, from here obviously.

Chrissy
19-06-2003, 06:32 AM
London pubs aren't all that bad compared to everywhere else a pint costs about £3.10 for beer and about £3.50 a pint of guiness.

At my local a pint of beer or Guiness is about £2.50 - £3.00.

If you are travelling on the tube after 6pm you are looking to pay about £4.00 for a travel card which means you can travel almost anywhere up until midnight.

The last tube train to the main stations (Euston, Victoria, Piccadilly etc) is about midnight, and they start running again at about 6am Sunday morning. (But it'll be worth checking that just in case I am wrong!)

Bed and Breakfasts are everywhere, and I reckon it'd cost you about £30 a night to stay in one.

A 'nicer' hotel type place is going to cost you upwards of £100 per night, but the food and bathrooms will be much nicer!

Drx Covent Garden is fantastic for shops like that, but I don't know the one you are talking about specifically.

The one thing that is VERY expensive are the black cabs. I alwaysuse them if I am working in London alone, as they are safer, but if I go for a night out 'up town' with my B/F we always get the dodgy mini-cabs. You can bargain with the drivers and get them to take you where ever you need to go for not much money at all!

Hope that helps a little bit!

Thanks for the advice, but we're currently paying 0 rent with Stocking's brother, which we should be able to do for a while! We're catching up with a friend on Friday night, and she and her b/f have been here for a few months and are still looking for a place, so the four of us will probably get a place together when Stocking and I return from Europe.

Anyway, back on topic, at this stage Stocking and look like postponing our Europe leg till the start of August, cos I've got some work lined up which means we'll have more money to go to Europe with! SO at this stage the 5th of July is a goer. Peach looks like a starter for that date too.

Ok, I think it's time to start trying to confirm things. (Here's where I shift into Event Manager mode!)

Details that seem to suit most of us as follows:

Date: Saturday 5th July
Place: Covent Garden
Meet at: Covent Garden Tube Station
Time: 7pm

After that, Covent Garden has a multitude of bars, pubs, clubs and places to eat so I reckon the best thing to do will be to decide what the majority of us want to do when we get there.

It looks like we have got the following people almost confirmed:

Soc and Stocking
Chrissy + Hubby to be
MisterBishi (possibly with MissBishi)
Drx + mate (to make sure we don't kidnap her!)
And3w (if Bishi can get details to him)
Peach
Bostonmess (if he stops being a chicken about coming so far south...we don't bite you know!:D )

It looks like Stocking's idea is about the only one that's going to get off the ground!

I think we're not going to have UK ZMeet until Stocking and I return from our trip to the Continent and Ireland in October!

And Peach - you owe me a phone call, buddy!

Let's have Global Zmeet in Amsterdam early next year

Stocking and I are now back in London (tho Stocking heads back to Australia for 10 days next week) so it's time AGAIN to TRY to get some sort of get-together planned with all you UK peoples ... I know plext mentioned something to MisterBishi in IRC recently, so I will be calling him in the near future to discuss said idea.

Call me on my mobile mate.

I'm still at work and could do with someone to talk to. :)

plext

OK, I have talked to SOC and 'Bishi, and we have the nucleus of a meet happening at maison plext.

Attendees so far:
SOC
Stocking
'Bishi
MissBish
plext
Miss plext

The weekend starting 31-10 is bad for 'Bish, and *I believe* that the previous two weekends, Stocking will be at a long distance birthday party, or at least jet-lagged to all hell from attending said shindig.

I think that the weekend of 7-11 may be the best chance we get, which would also allow us to add to the entertainment with vast quantities of fireworks. MMMMMM pyrotechnics.

Any thoughts?

MisterBishi

Bloody hell 'Bishi :)

Allrighty then. I still think that the weekend I mentioned may be a good time to get the wandering Aussies up here for an explosives extravaganza, we can have a get together another weekend.

Anyone want to open the bidding?

MisterBishi
08-10-2003, 08:31 PM
Yeah, it's a shame, explosives would've been cool. If it were actually Friday the 7th I may be able to make it, but that's going to be tight as a cow's ass at fly time with everybody working.

The week of Nov 3-7 (ie, M-F) I am working at the Evening Standard starting at 7am, which means a 3pm finish ... which means we could get away quite easily that afternoon (depending on when/where Stocking is working...) but count us in for a weekend of frolics, fun and the universe going "foom". Is it Guy Fawkes night? Is that the reason for the fireworks? Can we have a bonfire too? And lots and lots of nice single-malt Scotch?

a heads up for all the england zgeekers particularly those in the london area. one of my super fave musicians, pat fish, has formed a new band called Wilson and seems to be playing a few dates now and then.

fish is the genius behind one of my favorite bands of all time the jazz butcher (http://www.jazzbutcher.com/) making my Top 100 (http://forums.zgeek.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5970&perpage=15&highlight=Jazz%20Butcher&pagenumber=1) at least four times with two popping up in the top ten.

it looks like wilson played on the 16th but, with luck, they might do so again. fish is pretty good about keeping his website updated with his activities.
