Guns don't kill people. People kill people.
A well taken care of cat does not kill native wildlife. A neglected cat who has an irresponsible owner does kill native wildlife.
My cat has never killed any native wildlife. She has killed a few sparrows, and although I don't condone it, and I wasn't terribly worried about it.
Cats are considerate enough to bury their poos, Dogs like to leave them around.
Cats don't have inferiority complexes, thus lack the need to pee on every tree they pass.
Cats don't keep you awake all night with their incessant barking.
Cats don't try to attack my 7 yr old brother when he is playing in our backyard. The German Shephard next door does however.
Cats are independent. And contrary to popular belief quite loyal. When I was younger my cat was catnapped, but escaped and found its way back to our place two weeks later.
And I'm sure someone posted a news article not long ago about how a cat rescued its owner by alerting them to a fire in the house.
And, most importantly, Cats are so cute. They purr and snuggle into your lap and lick your chin. My kitty keeps me warm and for some unexplained reason always know when I am sad. On those occasions she seeks me out, and purrs and acts so cutely until I'm smiling again.

Now this is an outright lie. ALL cats kill for pleasure, wether they are well fed or not. If you've seen it kill a few sparrows, then it's killed a multitude more. 1 sole cat is PROVEN to have made an entire species extinct, and it was extremely well fed.

Cats are independant...... independant enough to full of disease that doesn't affect them, and then jump up on food preperation areas so that everyone gets sick.

Since cats already have their own musical, I'd say dogs.
Whiskers meow'ed
Cats don't try to attack my 7 yr old brother when he is playing in our backyard. The German Shephard next door does however.
"A neglected dog who has an irresponsible owner" might do that. Or if kids tease or have teased a dog they might have a tendency of not liking kids or strange people. I have also seen dogs get nervous at little kids whinging because it hurts their ears. Also, you don't hear stories about dogs jumping to babies beds for a meal of jealousy.
Cats are considerate enough to bury their poos, Dogs like to leave them around.
Not outdoors they don't. They do attempt to scratch the ground without much success, just like dogs. Dogs don't even shit or piss indoors.
P.S. This post was full of generalizations that can be counter-generalized, just like most posts in this thread.

I acknowledge that in some cases cats are a pest. They can be extremely destructive. But I prefer to blame those who introduced the species into such an unique eco-system.
So sure, in some cases they need to be eradicated. In a humane way, for they are intelligent and beautiful creatures.
At least cats don't eat babies. A dingo does however. And a dingo is a dog. So, if that is my final argument, then its a poor one to say the least.
It all comes down to personal preference.
I'm a cat person.

Dogs are much better, less annoying.
justify it all you want, you're still wrong.
but none of those animals have anything on a well raised ferret. ferrets rule. ferrets rule. if you say the ones you saw were wild animals, then their owners obviusly don't know how to care for them and probably should be dragged out and shot, like most cat owners should.

Cats are way cooler.
Most dog lovers are so hate-filled. Most cat people don't HATE dogs, they just prefer cats. The same, however, cannot be said for most dog people. They want cats to die, or want to do the killing themselves. Have some compassion and acceptance.
Besides, how much you like your pet depends on how well it's trained. Apart from the odd curiousity meow, my cat only speaks when it's time for dinner, or wants to be let out to relieve himself. I might also add that he always goes in his litterbox, so cleanup is a breeze; no scooper and plastic bags for me!
Cats are meticulous about their cleaning, and is usually what their doing when there not sleeping or eating. You don't need to clean cats. You don't need to walk cats.
My cat was always too docile to get up and chase wildlife. He had better things to do, like sleeping. He did chase a mouse down in the house once... That was COOL!
Cats meows don't start off a chain reaction with every other cat in the neighbourhood.
Cats are more affectionate. They like to sleep on you for your warmth, and they don't mind being pet. Dogs, however, want you to scratch them... Pure laziness.
My cat (Meggsie) rules because he loves everybody. Even if he never met you and you sat down on my lounge, he would sit on you and go to sleep. When he sits on the kitchen stools (not on the tables! Only untrained animals do that) and you pet him on the back, he would climb up and hug you (one paw on each shoulder) and headbutt your chin.
He'd also hug you if you carried him around, as he didn't mind being carried around... Alot of cats, and most dogs, seem like they're uncomfortable when you carry them.
And as far as dog "loyalty" is concerned, I think to word you mean is "dependency" :p
Cats RULE... Case closed.
Edit: Corrections are in red. Some people (flounder) are pedantic about typographical errors, and seem to have forgotten what generalizations are. They have general (not absolute) application, and have their place in conversation. My comments about dog lovers at the top of this post reflect my opinion based on reading other Cat vs Dog threads, and meeting many dog people (who have said things to the effect of they wouldn't swerve/brake if a cat was in the middle of the road; would enjoy swinging it around from it's tail, kicking it, or putting it in the microwave.) I (personally) have never met a cat person who held similar views towards dogs.

A lion or tiger's natural habitat is usually located where humans are not. These animals are inherently wild and aggressive. If you get in their way, and get eaten, oh well.
As for a tiger attacking someone through the bars at a zoo....Firstly, whether the tiger has been zoo-bred makes little difference (I'm not saying it makes no difference) to the animals natural penchant for aggressive behaviour. Secondly, a wild animal being locked up would surely get the shits.
On another note, when was the last time any of you heard a story about a person being mauled by a Pitbull? There are certain dogs which are naturally aggressive. Regardless of how well they are taken care of, the could and sometimes do cause harm to innocent people.
This doesn't mean I think that these types of animals should be killed. I do feel, however, that which ever animal you decide to keep as a pet should be entirely your responsibility.
If you have a cat, make sure it has a bell and do all you can to ensure it does not kill native wildlife.
As for dogs, if you are the owner of an aggressive dog, be extra careful when taking it out in public, especially around children.
Get them desexed, give them their shots (goes for both cats and dogs), keep them on a leash when required.
As an aside, we had chickens for pets for a few months. Mind you my cat was dead scared off them. They have to be the most hopeless pets imaginable. The fact that they all ate chicken scared the hell out me.

I vehemently resent the second gross generalization. I am not hate filled, I am expressing my opinion as are you.I have owned Cats & Dogs and I prefer Dogs. I don't want to do the illing (sic) myself. The last line in the above quote is equally applicable to you.
This does not need to turn into a cat-fight nor a dog-fight.

Cats kill b/c it's instinct. Having done an animal husbandry course I know this for a fact. All cats hunt. Put a bell or 2 on them and they will kill less. But NO. Not ONLY bored cats kill. They're natural hunters. Dogs scavenge more than kill to eat.
And you SHOULD be worried about your cat killing sparrows. Does YOUR cat have a bell?
Yes cats DO pee on stuff. It's called "Spraying" And guess what? They do it EVERYWHERE including INDOORS. So matey... you're worse off pee wise. Trust me.
Cats DO keep you up all night. Never had a cat go mental in your house? Obviously not. Mine used to bring RATS into the house, let them lose and spend hours chasing/catching them. THAt kept me up. Currently my flatmate has 2 cats. The male keeps me up ALL night with his incesant howling/crying. Some cats are just noisy. Both cats also love to explore. They knock things over and make a racket. Keeps me up all night.
Dogs are cute too. Cats drool too.

But the cat won't run to me with love when I get home. The cat will only bother me when it wants something. My dogs just sit next to me. They just want to be around me.
Dogs are pack animals. They NEED company. Which is why they are so much more loyal than cats. Cats are solitary animals. They don't need anyone/anything and have no shame in showing it. :D

My cat has a bell. My cat also, as your learned self has stated, has a natural instinct to kill. I stand by position of not being worried about her killing a few sparrows. Each time she was wearing her bell, yet because of her instinct, her abilities and perhaps the birds stupidity, she caught them.
I would worry if she had killed our native wildlife. Luckily she hasn't, and I'm sure that the major reason for that is because we don't have native birds in our area. If we did however, I would reconsider the current arrangement and not let her roam outside at will.
And yeah, I made a few generalisations. But in the case of MY cat they are true. And that is why I prefer cats to dogs.
My cat never keeps me up.
She has never pee'd inside.
She is quiet, loving, and docile. And I have an extra soft spot for her, because she is deaf (hence has no name). I've had many cats over the years, and have never had a problem with any of them.
As for your comment about the two reasons cats love a person, my experiences have been very different. After all, just like dogs, cats have varying personalities.
I don't hate dogs, some I am scared off, some I find irritatingly stupid, and some I like. But I prefer cats.

I am sorry to take a small excerpt from your post and comment on it.However to me this was significant. The fact that there are no native birds in your area. I hope you live in a heavily urbanised environment where native birds are not likely to be.However the fact that there ARE sparrows means native birds could be supported by the ecosystem. So why are there no native birds?. I know there is at least one cat, I am assuming there are many, many more. A crimson Rosella a day keeps native birds away.I had a cat called "Tiger", like all the cat owners have said he had his endearing characteristics. However, no matter what tactic I tried, bells, bells on a length of chain so when he crouched to pounce it would tingle thus alerting his prey. Locking him up all day, all night, and so on until my spare time was spent making sure he didn't kill anything.Pets are great fun!.The final straw was when a mating pair of Crimson Rosellas (the tomato sauce bottle ones) settled in our largest gum tree. He lusted after those two and eventually after the female had laid her eggs and the male was out looking for food, and I was cooking mine, he climbed the tree, killed this most magnificent bird and left it dead on my doormat.I was deeply affected by this as I thought the bird had more right to be there than the cat.Rights were irrelevant and the bird is still dead and her offspring too. I had him put down humanely(is there such a thing?) after that. I'd had him 4 years. I will never own another cat. Before this final killing I reckon he'd killed at least 15 birds that I knew of. I wonder how many I didn't know about?.
Sorry to carry on but that is why I prefer dogs.

my vote goes to cats
my kittys name is mischa, and shes a pweety tortioseshell (sp??), with a spunky attitude, however shes mellowed as she gets older.
we got her from a friend of mums, who had a tom cat as well, and as the story goes, she locked them in a room for a while together, a fight followed, and the big naughty tomcat ran out of the room with a bit of his ear missing :D
that explains the sign hanging up in the kitchen "beware the attack cat"

Like be guide dogs for the blind, alarm dogs for the deaf, rounding up sheep, pulling sleds across Antarctica.Labradors were used to swim out to grab the seaward end of fishing nets. Guard Dogs, Police Dogs. I'm sure someone can think of a few more. Yes they are dumb. They can't talk. :(

Yay. Pictures of the great and powerful Meggsie are here (http://forums.zgeek.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=193213#post193213).
--
I also disagree with those 2 reasons. I'm pretty sure cats don't need you for a place to crap, and dogs are the ones hung up on food. Cats don't do tricks/tasks because they have dignity and personality. They're not gonna do what you tell 'em just cos they're getting a treat or a scratch. Dogs are Yes-Men who do something mainly for attention, or to get something in return.
My cat learnt a trick. We have sliding doors in our house (you can see one in one of the photos) and he can open them when they are closed. This trick he figured out by himself (not because I showed him) because it benefits him.
Dogs also get exited and (sometimes) jump on you when they wanna play, or go for a walk, or want something to eat. There so needy, when all cats need is affection.
imp I would say those are badly behaved cats. I think having them desexed does make a big difference. Meggsie only pee'd inside once, and that's because we left him inside once when we went out. Like I said he'd always stand at the door and meow when he wanted out.
When he went outside, despite there not being much to kill (suburban area) he was just too docile to wanna chase stuff around. He'd rather scratch the wooded blocks lining the garden, or just laze in the sun.
You also said your cats don't run to you when you get home. When my brother or I walk in the door Megg's always greets us, usually with a little hello meow, too. Also, if you put you head near the floor, or lie done, he runs over, headbutts your forehead, then flops on his side and rolls over. Very affectionate. Maybe your cats don't love you because you don't love them. :p

Flounder, I assume the reason there are no native birds in my area is one: it is quite an urban area, and two: there a little to no native trees.
So no, the cats didn't get to them. Unless you want to suggest that the cats also ate the trees. But that would be going out on too far a limb. ;)

I believe I did mention "unless it is a heavily urbanised area",
and no they don't eat trees, although they scratch them rather nastily. You have foreign trees?, were they fully imported?.

HUGE Generalisations lie ahead>>>>
I guess dog-people like the fact that dogs can be trained to perform useful tasks, whereas cats cannot be trained to do anything they don't want to do.
However, cat-people would view this as proof that cats are more intelligent.
Cats can perform useful tasks but they do it from love, not training.
Any fool can get a dog to show them dog-love.
Cat-love is much more elusive and hard-to-earn, but so much more satisfying.
I have much love for all animals (yes even drug sniffer dogs), I just happen to think cats rule.
I would never harm an animal and some of the cat-hating attitudes really disgust me, on a personal level.

Cats rawk. Dogs are stupid and in general shit me.
Comparison:
I go to a friends house where he's got a dog and a cat. Upon wandering into his backyard for the first time his dog barked at me untill I was out of sight, while his cat sat on the mat.
After I had gone there a few times more his dog stopped barking at me and instead proceeded to jump at me and annoy me at every opportinuity, untill I patted/kicked it. (Okay, I didn't kick it, but I sure as hell wanted to :p) It still does this, even though I now ignore the thing completely. The cat was completely different to the dog. Untill I patted the cat it never went near me, and it hardly ever bothered me unless I wasn't really doing anything.
edit: Alchor, you also rawk. :)

I heard quite a few years ago that they did a study on animal intelligence, and found the border collie (smartest dog) equivelant to that of a 3 year old child. I don't have a link for it, cause I can't remember where I heard or saw it, quite possibly on TV.

Finally tonight, I want to talk about a guy called Pavlov, who was Eastern European, I think Russian, and did the famous experiment, “Pavlov’s Dog.” You probably heard of, ring bells and dogs eating food, response times, Pavlovian kind of response, it’s all about ice-cream and… And he wrote these experiments.
“Day One – Pavlov’s Dog – Rang bell, dog ate food, very excited…” He’s become Welsh! (Welsh accent) “Very excited… terribly excited here in Russia. Day Two – been well-accepted here in Russia… changed my name from Evans to Pavlov. I’m now called Gareth Pavlov… and fitting in well. Day two – rang bell, dog ate two loads of food, very excited. Day Three, right? (big grin, trying hard not to laugh) Day Three – rang three bells, dog ate a whole bunch of food and my leg, too. Very excited, win Nobel Dog Prize for cats.”
So he did this, he won the prize… Nobel, whatever he won, and Pavlov’s dog, we all know that, but you never heard his cat results, did you? You probably thought he was finished!
“Pavlov’s Cat Results – Day One – rang bell… cat fucked off. Damn… Day Two – rang bell, cat went and answered dog. Day Three – rang bell, cat said he’d eaten earlier. Day Four – went to ring bell on day four, but cat had stolen batteries. Final day – Day Five – went to ring bell with new batteries, but cat put his paw on bell, so it only made a ‘thunk!’ noise. Then cat rang his own bell! I ate food…”

Dog are cool, so are cats. Can a person just love them both equally?

:(
........ sorry but i had to respond to this. was searching across google and found this forum.
....... you killed your cat of four years cause it ate a pretty bird? good idea. kill that cat for doing something natural and what he didn't think was wrong, since you apparently didn't teach him. if that is why you prefer dogs then where have you been? dogs kill for fun too. and please don't tell me it's cause they weren't raised right when you had a cat that killed birds.
I like dogs and cats AND ferrets. They all have some good and bad. =)
You know you and your cat were alot alike. He killed without thinking, and so did you. ;)
can't decide. i like cats, but then again i've spent the last 10 years with dogs, and i like them too.

cats are simply put, some of the mst disgusting, noxious and high strung creatures to walk this planet.
cute, kittens can be cute fluffy and loving, but they then turn into cats. at which point they should be turned into dog food.

What makes them disgusting? Dogs are the ones that shit all over the ground, leaving a nasty surprise for anyone who gets up early, that is, while it's still dark.
Cats at least keep their food in their bowl.
Cats shit where you want them to.
My cat remains fluffy, at age 5.

cats.. you mean those things that gack all over the place? generally ge sick at teh drop of a hat? experse their anal glands all over everythign when they get really pissed? have bacterial laden mouths that require some nasty injections if they bite you, the scratches that tend toward infection? generally havin to climb on everything?
no nothign at wrong at all with most cats. no wonder different cultures eat them, thats their only use.

Although cats can be usefull if you have a pest problem, I like dogs a lot better (my avatar might be a clue). They are more fun to train, they are more obedient, and (mine at least) is better with children, makes my wife feel safe, and keeps the damn rabbits out of my garden. Granted a cat could keep the rabbits out as well. (I had a cat that used to catch rabbits and bring them in the house to eat. Once the cat left it at the foot of my bed. That was the coolest cat ever. It was a pain to clean up after him though.
I like a dogs companionship better than a cat, but cats need less maintenance. I guess its what you prefer.

Wouldn't have a clue what your talking about, my cat is well behaved. It knows where the door is... Hell it can even open and close the door... She bites and scratches me all the time, yet I haven't ever had an infection or required an injection. Only thing she climbs on is furniture, but that really isnt an issue, she jumps on the couch and sleeps... No scratching or tearing... Maybe you just had an arsehole of a cat in your younger days.. :P

If that last statement is true, then what about when they eat dogs? :o
