I'm in the market for a DVD player (since my PC one is so shit). Can anyone make suggestions (and justify them technically), for DVD player models available in Australia.
The features I've identified thus far that I think I should have in a DVD player are: Not region locked
Capable of having macrovision disabled
Dual optical (i.e. it can read multiple CD-R and DVD formats)
Can play NTSC and PAL Discs
Has conversion to PAL video output
Can play VCD
Can play CDs and MP3 CDs
Video and S-Video output
Please feel free to add other suggestions (and explain why).
I have a Pioneer player (well, not currently in my posession - girlgeek is looking after it for me!) and it has allthose features... multizone is not standard - it's usually done post-factory but before you buy it - but I think pretty much all players convert NTSC to PAL. Best advice I can give, seeing as you know exactly what you want, is to shop around. But I do recommend Pioneer players - mine's been great.

Don't forget SVCDs. I did and that sucked.
Have to get a new player now.
club x have a dvd player for $99 and you get free pron dvd and 50% off next dvd purchase.
HOW COOL IS THAT.
As for brands best brand you can get is pioneer, I had the best you could buy.... then moved to melbourne.... what a fucked idea that was... Dad gets to keep "his" DVD player surround sound and widescreen tv....I set it all up for him....

I would have to go for the pioneer dvd player as well. Have had 2 of them, still have 1 but daughter has claimed it and the tv. My stereo has an inbuilt dvd player.

it be fair oobs.
its some dodgy brand "slimeone' or something, but the qualities all the same.

my pioneer computer one does all that i beleive
This One (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00007FSB9/qid=1054246906/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_1/102-9600285-4068919?v=glance&s=electronics&n=507846) is $39.99 american after rebate, it's gotten very good reviews and there is something you can do with the options to make it region free....it also plays cdr's and cd-rw's....mp3's....
Its still only $50 without the rebate....

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.
Maybe y'all (:D) can help with some other ponderings.
Ok, so I purchase a DVD player.
Naturally I would like to pair it with a good TV, and as I'm somewhat visually impared, I'd like to get a large one (means I don't have to sit like 30 cm from it you know). When I say large, I mean large - I've previously had a rear-projection large screen TV (from memory it was about 5 feet tall and something like a 52" screen size).
Before anyone goes silly... no I am not going to shell out 13K for a widescreen plasma display, so forget that one right away :D
I'm primarily going to want to play DVDs on this, and occaisionally watch cable and terrestial TV. Given that the primary use is for DVDs, I might as well consider getting a surround sound system while I'm at it, to get the best result.
I don't need integrated digital TV reception, but I do need component video input from the DVD to the TV right? The DVD player will need Dolby 5.1 output to the surround sound system right?
As you can see, I don't know much about it all, so suggestions of sites to read, or things to think about would be good.

I'm almost positive all DVD players have 5.1 digital output....maybe not, but im pretty close to sure....and as for a bigger TV I've never been fond of projections, theyre never clear, but you can get a bigger non Hi-Def tv for a reasonable price usually....I have a pretty large Sony screen and it's definitely decent for what I use it for, which is video games and Dvd's with the occasional simpsons/family guy/ futurama
About the 5.1 dolby, that 40 buck one that i was mentioning has 5.1 dolby digital output, and since it's lower in the line (I.E. not brand name etc...) i'm sure all the higher end ones have digital output as well
