Common Sense or Book Smart?

There are MANY personalities here. I'm curious as to which of you fit in the catagory I think you should be in. I'm sure others are curious to.

For instance I think that And3 is common sense, not book smart (spelling) and the same goes for me. I think that Diva belongs in this catagory as well, she is book smart too, but correct me if I'm wrong but you gained your knowledge thru "experience" didn't you.

Whereas, I would put Druid, Grumble, & SOC in the booksmart catagory. Don't know why, just a hunch.

More people have called me a retard than anything else, so I think that I will put myself in the retard category.

Common sense + Book smart.

Don't stick a knife in the toaster because you'll electrocute yourself. This is becaues your average knife is made of stainless steel which is a conductor of electricity.

I chose common sense, and proudly. Like Einstein, I do not like to waste my brain on things that are not practical or of interest to me.
The first Head Chef I did my apprenticeship under used to say that too much knowledge in the hands of the wrong person is very dangerous. I understood what he meant as having previously attended uni I knew that there are people who are HD students yet put them in the real world or even a social situation and they come across as retarded.
I also had a four-hour conversation with an Aboriginal Elder who had never read a book in his life yet was one of the most intelligent people I have ever met.
It goes without saying that you can't believe everything you read and it takes a certain amount of common sense to be able to distinguish what should be taken as gospel.
I guess what I am trying to say without common sense, being able to name the Capital of all the Countries in the world will not help you much. I guess that is why it shits me when people correct others spelling, grammar and minor details. Pedantic intellectual bigotry really pisses me off. The best way to accumulate knowledge is to communicate with others. As long as you can understand what the other person is saying then that is all that should matter. Assuming people are stupid because they cannot spell or cannot use a computer as efficiently as you or because they do not know that steamrollers do not roll steam is arrogant.
I have even had people suggest that my intelligence is somehow hindered because I still use a dial-up modem. Ridiculous, especially since that is all I can get here in the sticks.

Communication breaks down when people who are trying to say something put it across in a method so full of mistakes that it's incomprehensible. If it's something little I'll usually let it slide, but if the sentence is nonsense and I can't make out which words they're trying to use I'll say something about it.

If someone's trying to talk in technical language and they say the wrong thing, I'll correct them. This is especially true if we're in a group discussion. I may know what they mean (sometimes), but what they mean and what they say can often be two different things.

The problem with common sense is that it's not all that common :)

I see what you're getting at here, Nand. I know a lot of people going to uni right now that think they're smart, though only seem to be because they studied all the time and had help throughout highschool. They only got by because they worked really hard at being smart, though they were actually still quite dumb. Now that they have to organise themselves and learn so much all on their own, they're failing miserably.

I got through high school without doing any work. I got a UAI of over 90. Now that I am in Uni I am realising that my brain is only good at certain things. I'm okay at discussing abstract concepts (arts component), but hopeless at applying concepts to actual facts. (law component).
I can also flip my eyelids instead out and touch my nose with my tongue. So in summary:
I am book smart to a degree
Commonsense-less
And a retard.

I'm an other.

I believe that my "intelligence" derives from the genetic inheritance I was given at conception.
In my Grandmothers time it used to be called "Heritage and Home." That is to say how you turned out as a person was a 50/50 product of your genetics, and the home environment that you experienced as you grew up. Nowadays the thinking is that the ratio is more like 80/20, and the 20 for life experiences is looking decidedly shakey. Geneticists I know are now saying that predicting a persons strengths and weaknesses, what vocation they are likely to persue, interests, talents and educational outcomes etc, is becoming feasible with advances in humane genome knowledge. Tantalising is a good desciption.

The insurance industry will have us all by the proverbials if they can get their hands on the database though. :(

You could even say you use common sense in correcting people.

You kind of left out practical learning, which is different than book smarts or common sense. So I fall into the other catagory. I have common sense and book learning, but if I want to find out about something I take it appart, play with it, try it in different ways. If I need to find out about something I dig at until I find the answers I need.

Don't worry, Tank. Zgeek values you and your kind. So does Grumblefish, makes him feel more intelligent. ;)

I've got nothing against you or your posts though, so as far as I'm concerned you're OK.

I'm a retard....

*sighs*

I have some form of intelligence because people generally say I'm smart....

The only problem is that the moment I start thinking it all goes to hell and back again.

So I'm gonna pick other as well, because I'm subconsciously smart *grins* As, if I'm not consciously thinking I can come up with some pretty intelligent stuff.... but the moment I turn to the conscious.... well.....

Duhhhhh u say whut now?

I AM SO SMART! I AM SO SMART! S-M-R-T! I mean, S-M-A-R-T!

I wax and wane through the categories, from time to time book smart, for a period, common sense. And depending on how much I've had to drink the night before, sometimes I wake up retarded. :p

On a side note, does anyone here know their IQ? I know mine, but I'm afraid to post it lest it be annihilated by the big bad brain of some other.

.....oh well, fuck it - I tested at 136 when I was a lad. Although, maybe if someone had told me WHAT THE FUCK WAS GOING ON instead of just dragging me to the principal's office where a strange man had me perform strange tasks (ooooh, that's just begging to be taken out of context), I would have done better. It was grade 4, I was scared.

Hopefully im a common sense kinda guy, I learn most of what I know by using things and asking ppl for help if I get stuck. Although when it comes to Hardware I read as much I as I can to try and keep current.

I see that the majority of people chose "common sense" or "both". Consequently, I seriously doubt the validity of this poll.

i know a few people at uni who are 100% book smarts and not naturally smart i feel sorry for them because they have to put in so much more work than most people just to maintain the same level while most people just trudge through the work fairly easily.

Book smarts. No common sense.

As proof of the no common sense, I had a 4 foot fish tank delivered to our upstairs lounge room instead of under the house where there is plenty of storage, despite the fact it will soon be moved to another house.

Der!
