Hey guys and girls, we're looking for another tech to join our company.

We're a managed services provider looking for someone with experience in SBS2003, SBS2008, Exchange 2003, Exchange 2007, AD etc.

Essentially, looking for someone with a few years experience, not some noob straight out of school/TAFE etc.

At this point, it's a part-time role but will be moving to fulltime, probably within 6 months or so. We're a small company and growing as quickly as we can. We need the extra tech to help with the workload, but can't afford to pay for someone fulltime just yet.

Details as follows:

- Company currently has 7 staff, 4 of whom are techs.
- Based in Albion, Brisbane (sorry, you can't telecommute from Perth etc :()
- We support a range of companies around Brisbane etc with some clients interstate handled by partner companies
- About 50 servers and just short of 300 workstations under management (plus ad hoc clients etc)
- Ideally, you'd have some experience with Shadowprotect, Trend Micro Worry Free and at least know what Cisco IOS *is*, even if you haven't used it.
- Some trips to client sites would be expected so it would be preferable to have your license and a car. Obviously, all company travel is reimbursed etc.

Don't have figures on salary yet, depends on your experience amongst other things. Will know more as soon as my boss crunches the figures to see just what we can afford.

Also, we're trying to keep a fair balance of male/female staff, so if you're a GirlTech(tm), PLEASE let us know. The one we currently have is feeling lonely :P

My brother in Melbourne is thinking about taking a voluntary redundancy from a job he's only been in three years, the payout is only $28,000, that's only about eight months of wages, I think he'd be foolish to do it, he doesn't have another job lined up.

My company is going to tender to upgrade the current MS access database. The company is growing, and it is just too small/unwieldy. There is a database brief already available, and we are looking for something that can be used by multiple users, across the internet, and someone who can develop and maintain the database, preferably in Melbourne.

If anyone is genuinely interested, and has some good suggestions, whether it be another sort of database, or a CRM style product, we are open to suggestions, please PM me for more details.

Hey..

I've been around forever, but only as a lurker.

Back in December I was laid off from my job, and started doing freelance computer repair to pay the bills. Things went well, though not as I had planned, I cut my expenses as much as I can, and I'm still having trouble making ends meet.

I do most of my work on-site, in clients' homes, in a college town of around 50,000 people. Students are around 80% of my clients. During the school semester, I have enough business to get me by, but not as much as I would like. When school is out for the summer (In the US, btw), however, my workload drops like a rock. I have gone from having 3-4 computer gigs per week to having one, if I'm lucky. Ideally, I would like to have 8-10 gigs per week.

I have yet to advertise, other than occasionally posting to craigslist or name-dropping when I see someone having a problem. I do have a website for my services, at http://jmcc.joshmellott.com/. What I would like to do is start advertising for the Fall semester, which begins in three weeks. I am looking for a cost-effective way to get myself out to the general public to help support myself when the students are back home, while simultaneously building my student client base? I want to keep both in balance because the students typically recommend me by word of mouth, while most of my other clients are willing to spend more to make everything work (typically families, with multiple computers and a home network).

Does anyone have experience with this sort of problem, that can help me build my client base cheaply and effectively?

I'd like to incur no more than $10US spent per new client, I typically make around $75US per job. My budget at the moment is around $200US. Most of my clients are satisfied with my work for quite a while before returning, so repeat customers are a small portion of my business, and new clients are my bread and butter.

Thank you

jmello

Am in a dilemma. Part of me enjoys the freedom of owning a self supporting business, but the loneliness kills me. I'm used to working for multinationals where I thrive on being one in a hive.

I'm seriously thinking of returning to a workplace so I can grow the business at a steady pace and work in a role because I want to, not because I have to. I did have a little job, but work is too infrequent. My parents' business is also about to turn 1 and they no longer need me.

I love my business and the world it has catapulted me into in the last year but I need to leave the house sometimes, and not just to travel interstate for a convention to see the inside of taxis, hotels, buildings etc.

Does anyone have a business and a full time job?

When I got married last year, one of the ways we saved money was to get a friend (who's a semi-pro photographer) to do our photography and just give me all the RAW files to sort out later. As a result, I've spent the last couple of months doing lots of tutorials and learning about Lightroom and Photoshop, and I've found it to be extremely fascinating.

If anyone has experience in jobs that consist of a fair bit of Photoshop work, I'm just wondering what opportunities there are and what would be expected/required.

ie:

- I would assume that graphic design type jobs would require a degree?

- When fashion photography's being photoshopped, is it usually the photographer doing it?

- Would a web designer do the PS work themselves or have a graphic design type of person do it?

I know this is quite vague, and I'm not hoping to walk straight into a job. At this stage I'm about to start the process of applying to be a firefighter, and if I manage to get in, I would consider doing a degree part time in my spare time.

Thanks in advance for any wise words.

I'm not sure whether this would really go under 'Careers and Employment' or 'Law', but here goes anyways.

I'm just a little confused by some ATO stuff. I got myself an ABN a few months back. I know for tax time I can just stick it on my own personal Tax Return and be done with it. The only other two bits I can't work out though is....

- Whether a Business Activity Statement is needed. Some places I've seen online mention needing to do one, some don't.
- Whether or not I need to 'create' any documentation out of the accounts I've put together.

I know I could see a tax agent ... but for the amount of money I made out of the ABN last year (<$400) it sorta doesn't seem worth it. So anybody with any knowledge of this that can cause my head not to hurt so much from working it out would be appreciated :)

2 - 3 years ago I wouldve said Fuck Yeah! Especially if it paid more money and it was a good move career wise, but now that I find myself in that predicament im not so sure. There is a chance the term would be extended at the end of the 12 months, but there is a very real possibility that I would be out on the street in 12 months time - as some of you would know it's slim pickings out there for IT jobs at the moment.

So, should I stay in this dead end job and keep looking for another permanent position, or take the gamble and take on a 12 month fixed term? (mind you, I havent even gone for the interview yet)
