I have been keen to get into photography for a while now and after some research (reading and talking to some professionals) I finally picked up my Canon 1000D with the Twin IS lenses last night.

Now I have a reasonably good camera for a beginner (so I'm told) and am super keen to start learning about it. From what I have read, first things I need to learn are about aperture, ISO, shutter speed and depth of field. I have read a bit a have a rough understanding of how they relate eg From what I understand, Low ISO, High Shutter speed and a low aperture will give me a really sharp image under the right lighting conditions. Feel free to correct me and call me a noob if I am wrong.

What I was wondering if anybody has any tips or guides to help me get started a little more. How do I work out whats the correct settings or is it just a play around thing? I think its more I am looking for some suggested settings for different situations (landscape, different light etc). Maybe I am just a lostie atm.

I plan on going to do a course in about a month or so, however, new toy and want to play now lol.

I've had an idea that as my photos are all on CD or hard drive I'd like to put the best up on the wall to remember the good times and also to give my parents a great Christmas gift.

So my thoughts;

1. Choose the 50 best
2. Ask you guys the best way to frame them (say 5 pieces x 10 pics) no need to be huge I picture it as hallway walk by pics
3. Best person to go to for framing, I live North Shore and have used a place at Crows Nest before who are great but that was for large 1 off pics.
4. I sort of picture this as like an art gallery where I will add (or include in the frame) a bit of history on each pic)
3. Get someone to spice the pics up in photohop just to clear up the colours, get rid of unwanten tourists in the way etc this I will pay for, these are valualble to me and want someone willing to put in some time.

So if you have spare time and want some tax free cash please PM me, I will take a week or 2 to choose the pics so no great rush but if you are good I will make it worth your time.

And I will donate extra to the Pirate/Buffy legal fraud (why is "fund" such a hard word to spell) if one of you helps out ;)

this time we'll be doing it in month long stints.
4 weeks. ive posted this late so lets get cracking.

so lets copy and paste:

This is a Four week, Weekly Competition with themes.

We like pretty pictures, so lets have a pretty picture comp. You provide the pictures the people decide whats pretty.
This is gonna be Picture comp, not a Photo comp so the technical perfection of your photo will mean less than its aesthetics. The objective of this is fun, take some weird photos and get people to do some interesting photography. If you're a little more pro and butthurt about the B&W comp, them maybe you might not want to enter, or may loosen up a bit.

Now the rules:

Photos need to fit the theme of the week that they are taken in.
- How you interpret this is up to you, but some will be specific.
  - Cheat if you have to.
You can enter any number of photos each week but must select one for that week to be voted on at the end of the comp.
- you can submit your photos for that week any time during that week.
  - ie two on monday, one tuesday, six thursday and two saturday, then choose one among all 11 at the end of the six weeks to be voted on for that weeks comp, either in the thread or via PM, that will be your entry for that week.
At the end of the 4 weeks a voting thread will be made to decide the favourite picture taken each week.
Entries are open, that is you post them right here in this thread.
- Everyone can see who and what you are entering and the quality of the competition - no not anonymous.
- Post them whenever you like but should be posted during the week they are entered for.
- you can enter whichever weeks you like, there is no obligation to enter every week
Photos can be edited, colourised or manipulated, unless specifically denied in that weeks theme.
EXIF data must remain intact.
- This will be important for some weeks themes
Pictures will have a maximum dimension of 1280 pixels on the longest side
- So it fits on most peoples screens. no 6000x9800 pictures.
Weeks will be from Monday to Sunday.

I'll endeavour to make some sort of prize perhaps, else ill just wrangle some rep from Pirate to hand out.

Anyway, I have a few questions. 1st: I need to get a head for my GP Focus. I was thinking a not-too-cheap ball head would be good for this but thought I'd ask.

2nd: I was looking at getting myself a proper tripod. I'll be taking it riding with me and need something that's lightweight, quick and easy to use but still reasonably solid. I'm on a bit of a budget, so I don't want to be forking out a squillion dollars for a tripod but am prepared to pay a little extra it is worth it.
