ZGeek News: Update in the ZGeek legal battle

Good news and bad news everyone. Last night I got an email from Greg Smith of Myrmidon enterprises regarding a hearing for today (Surprise!). The hearing was an effort to have ZGeek closed by a court order. Our lawyers attended and we were victorious. The request to have ZGeek closed was denied and the summons for the 17th of August was struck out.

So basically, we are in the clear... For a little bit as I don’t think this is the last we’ve heard from these guys and our lawyer says it is obvious that they are not done with us.

Unfortunately today’s proceedings cleared out the last of our legal funds. I'm sorry guys, but I won't be sending any money back, it's going to our lawyers. Luckily they are pretty damn awesome.

If the trouble returns, then I will put out the call to arms then as we will need funds to beat this. In the meantime, if you want to donate you can at anytime. Use this link or the donate link in the top navigation bar in the forums. I promise that none of your money will be spent on me. I have a full time job for that . All donations will be used to protect the site from future problems like this.

But now, some even worse news. ZGeek is abandoning Australia. ZGeek as a company has been shut down and any future of the site conducting business in Australia is just not going to happen until the laws change as they offer no protection for internet content hosts based in Australia. Basically, if you allow comment on your website and you live here, you are open for the same troubles as I am having. Even if your site is hosted OS. Got your own blog? Be very worried. Even after we complied with their lawyers demands they are still coming after me and the Broadcasting Act allows them.

That's pretty fucked up.

Although we are not finished, I’d just like to say a special thanks to Sagacious, That_bloke, Scythe and Donk. These guys have been above and beyond with their help. Plus to all those who have donated and sent their well wishes. This time has been pretty stressful and all of your support has meant the world to buffy and I. It shows this site IS worth fighting for and our community kicks ass. We have a fighting force of extraordinary magnitude! So you have my gratitude.

So now we wait and see what happens next.

Agreed with the last bit. We shouldn't have to and haven't tolerated paranoid internet bullies trying to censor our space on the internet. He came over to our house uninvited, broke all the vases, defecated on the carpet and was surprised when we retaliated. HURRR.

I think it means he will have to start a company OS and give ownership of the website to that company. Starting a business overseas will be a headache I assume.
