CNN's US election night stunt, in which reporter Jessica Yellin and rapper will.i.am appeared on set as three-dimensional "holograms", was little more than smoke and mirrors, physics experts say. In what was billed as a world-first, Yellin appeared to be beamed from Chicago into the network's New York studio for an interview with anchor Wolf Blitzer. But, in fact, Blitzer was looking at little more than a red mark on the floor.

It was a pointless exercise. Seriously, it certainly didn't help their coverage. In fact, I'd rather be able to see where the reporter was behind them, than as a 'hologram'. Would've been far more effective doing a cross from in front of the Obama crowd at the location.

Hmmz i saw this on cnn, and they said that it was just superimposed to look like they were there, and the computers matched the camera moves ect.

I did not see them claim it was anything else but a fancy looking graphic overlay.
It seems people didn't pay attention and now rubbishing them for what they misunderstood.

Although i glanced at the article so maybe i'm doing the same. But I did see cnn explain when showing it off that it was superimposed over the image.

Of course it is. Figuring that out doesn't take a rocket scientist. I was pretty much laughing my ass off the second I saw them describe that technology as a "hologram".

Honestly, I think it's cheap and annoying. Looks horrible too. Huge gimmick.

Yeah, but there was a follow-up interview on the night of the election in which they didn't describe anything as to how it worked, they only labeled it "via hologram". It's easy enough to figure out that it's not since there was no suspended medium like mist or fog to project upon (and as far as I know we don't have any reasonable technology to do this without it).

it was just a fancier form of augmented reality. i thought it was a cool thing, but not for a news cast and especially not for an election broadcast.

Just a stupid gimmick that they will eventually have to apologize for and say "we're douche bags" its not a hologram.
