The Melbourne singer, known as Wally de Backer to his mum, was quoted in a News Ltd paper on the weekend saying he had mixed feelings about the cover.
The song is now number one on the Billboard charts in the United States.
“They did such a faithful arrangement of the instruments but the vocals were that pop Glee style, ultra dry, sounded pretty tuned and the rock has no real sense, like it’s playing to you from a cardboard box … It made it sound dinky and wrong,” Gotye said.
Among the numerous news outlets to pick up the story was the Huffington Post which described his comments as “harsh words”.
