Free-to-air channels and pay TV are broadcasting dozens of old episodes of popular overseas series, as well as repeats of Australian shows, as a cheap alternative to producing new local content.

Fans of The Simpsons can watch 53 episodes of the animated series in seven days on Channel Ten and Foxtel's Fox8.

A study by The Sun-Herald reveals Two and a Half Men devotees can tune into 33 episodes of the comedy series on Channel Nine and Arena in the period August 26 to September 1. Followers of M*A*S*H can watch the show 28 times on Channel Seven and Fox Classics. Fans can see Friends 27 times in seven days on Foxtel's channel 111Hits.

Mentioned only in passing at last year’s Hitchcon, the first* TV adaptation of Douglas Adams’ Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency has now been officially announced by the BBC for their autumn/winter season. What do we know? That it’s going to screen on BBC 4 (not BBC 3 as originally planned), and that the plot will see Gently try “to solve the disappearance of a cat from an old lady’s house” – ie. it will be an adaptation of Adams’ first Gently book, at least in part. The script is by Howard Overman, creator of Misfits and Vexed, and according to his agent, the runtime is 60 minutes.

At the moment, the show is set to be a “one-off pilot” only, but healthy viewing figures and a good level of audience appreciation should change that quickly enough. They can count on me and Rich to be tuning in, I’m sure. Might this end up being the niche-channel Sherlock?

Divx labs have finally put out a beta version of their Divx player for Symbian phones. It supports the new shittier phones like the N97 and allows you to play all your AVI movies and what-not.

I just tested it on my Nokia N97. Unfortunately Nokia put in a really shit processor and about 2mb of ram on this phone so even small video files run like a slide show and are totally unwatchable.

But I am not surprised. The only joy I get from my Nokia N97 is the thought of one day shoving it down a Nokia developers throat. In landscape mode.

    Get it here.

..they just hired a new writer and they’re conceptualizing it right now. Lots of pre-production right now. He also says WB management loves the property and the studio is very enthusiastic about the project. Confirms the first movie would be volumes 1-3 and a second movie would be 4-6.

This movie has gone through rewrites, studio changes, director switches, outright cancellation..many people thought it would never see the light of day..and many people were also glad of it! The latest script(which may be retooled now) saw the action shift from Neo Tokyo to New Manhattan, and would undoubtedly have been cast with American actors(I doubt that will change anyway). Last casting rumors saw Leonardo DeCaprio and Joseph Gordon Levitt put forward for the roles of Kaneda and Tesuo, but all has been quite on that front since.

A TV broadcaster who claimed in a documentary that he had killed his dying lover has been charged with wasting police time.

Helen Allen, for the Crown Prosecution Service, said that 70-year-old Ray Gosling would appear at court to face the charge on September 14.

In a BBC program broadcast in February, Gosling said he had suffocated his partner, who was dying of AIDS. He did not give the name of the man, or say where or when the incident took place.

Allen said police had conducted an extensive investigation and concluded there was no evidence to support Gosling's claim.

"They are true Iron Chefs," he said.

    <a href=http://www.zgeek.com/content.php/3953-Krull-Wedding>Krull Wedding</a>

On a hot summer day in 1983, a dozen couples gathered in a soundstage in Burbank to take part in a group wedding. One after another, they walked past a pair of futuristic soldiers in fanciful armor, down a red carpet flanked by strangers in folding chairs, and up to an altar made of faux stone. These were the lucky winners of a national contest sponsored by Columbia Pictures. They had penned the winning statements describing, as the studio’s press release states, “why their ‘Fantasy Come True’ would be to have a ‘Krull’ wedding in Hollywood.”

This would be cool if everyone got a magical flying glaive. Mind you, a Krull type of wedding is still not as ghey as this one.

Ernie Dingo has been charged with slapping a student in the face at a primary school presentation in Carnarvon, on the northern WA coast.

It was reported that during a school assembly Dingo slapped an 11-year-old Aboriginal boy and one of the mothers reported the matter to police.

Although police believe the little shit deserved it, local detectives have charged the 54-year-old Queensland actor with common assault anyway.

He has been summonsed to face the Carnarvon Magistrate's Court on October 11. The maximum penalty for common assault is 18 months jail.

Return of the Ewok is a mockumentary produced during the filming of Return of the Jedi. Warwick Davis is hired to portray the Ewok character Wicket, but must search both the real world and the Star Wars universe to find the scene he is supposed to appear in. He meets many Star Wars cast members, both in and out of character, along the way.

The film was shot by ROTJ's first assistant director, David Tomblin, with the intention of being used as a marketing piece for the movie, but this never materialized. Its existence was not publicly known until it was mentioned by Davis in an interview in 1996, and he later screened it at all three Celebration events.
I've never seen this before. Big thanks to Satori for the heads up.

Always with the flora, that one: Pushing Daisies creator Bryan Fuller, I’ve learned exclusively, has just sealed a deal with Syfy to adapt The Lotus Caves for the small screen.

    fyi

The story revolves around two teenage boys who live in a colony on the Moon. The year is 2068[2] and the colony live inside The Bubble, a large dome that composes their entire world. The two teenage boys, Marty and Steve, grow bored and they decide to explore, but find something completely unexpected.
